Default The Bowmaster (A beginners Kensei Arcane Archer - By request)

    Build Name: The Bowmaster
    Author: Sigfried Trent
    Requester: Zebron
    Last Updated: 03/27/2011

    Key Words [Arcane Archer, Kensei]

    Objectives
Sometimes a request spawns more than one build in my mind. In this case Zebron asked for the “best” archer. I’m not much for “best” in anything DDO because its mostly subjective. I made a kind of Ultimate Arther with multiple TRs and such but I wanted to do a Kensei archer that was workable for a new player which is what this is.

The Kensei approach is probably the best choice for pure DPS but I have to say I like Ranger builds for much greater versatility. But this is a build that is all archer all the time so stock up on arrows and lets get to it.

    Design
For a FtP archer you get to choose between ranger and elf if you want to go for arcane archer, and certainly if damage is your goal, you want arcane archer. Ranger is great but fighter has better damage and accuracy options. Barbarian is another route but while damage is very strong there, accuracy can sometimes be a problem. Fighter also offers more room for feats to address some melee ability as well. So we end up with elf to qualify for arcane archer and also has an enhancement for bumping ranged damage. The down side is a weak constitution. For melee consideration, THF is the cheaper route and the elves Valenar melee enhancement has a nice damage bonus with the two handed falchion.

With all that in mind we look at stats. Our chief concerns are the dex requirements for improved precise shot (19) and strength for damage bonuses. After than we want as much Con as we can muster. 28pts leaves limited options but in this case we get a fairly decent spread. A little int is in there to help with the wiz casting (you still need at least +1 int from an item) and for enough skill points to maintain UMD.

Enhancements are pretty easy as the two Prestige Class Enhancements and their prerequisites eat up most of the enhancement points. The few remaining go into Elven Ranged bonuses, stat bumps, toughness, and Haste Boost.

The end result is a fairly durable archer with about as much DPS as a 28pt archer can reasonably hope for. Saves are actually not to bad thanks to the multi classing, but they aren’t amazing and you have no special defenses. Accuracy and damage are both very good. In the updated version I've included power attack and improved critical to give this build more of a Melee profile and dropped the shot on the run action. While that can be nice to have, its really not needed much of the time.

The number one rule with any ranger is don’t make your party chase you and the monsters around. Its not helpful. If you are alone kiting is great but in groups you should mostly stand your ground or take your friends to a tank and stop shooting while they pick up agro.

    Variations
You could drop some of the feats and pick up two weapon fighting but at that point you should consider ranger. This is really for the player that wants to go bow all the time. With tomes or 32pts you can get a bit more HP or str in there or more int for additional skills which would be nice.

Cool build. Although I think Rapid Reload is crossbows-only; Quick Draw might be a better choice.

I hope you don't mind if I post my build for comparison:

I did a ranger splash instead of rogue to get Bow STR right off the bat; also lets me dump-stat INT since I can't get max ranks in UMD anyway. Plus getting to use Cure wands from lvl 1 doesn't suck. I took Mental Toughness instead of Extend for extra SPs to power imbues; does it really matter if your lvl 1 spells last 1 min or 2? [EDIT: if I really wanted UMD I would probably do a bard splash instead of wizard and drop MT.] I did spend some feats on beefing up melee because I don't like archer builds which can't or don't switch to melee if and when it's necessary; I figure she uses 2H weapons while leveling then switches to TWF after lvl 15.

Toughest decisions are where to spend enh pts; definitely not enough to go around for everything I want. I loaded up this build on Haste boosts, but for my own purposes I would probably drop some of them for more STR, melee, and/or Toughness enhs; I prefer flat bonuses to short-term clickies, just because I suck at using the latter.

Comparison builds are much welcome and appreciated! More options for the person making the request is always good!

Does best archer include xbows? I have my pure Human Ranger who can swap ranged weapon types for versatility. Repeaters still own range damage, after slayer arrows you need above average gear though to stay on top. This will become more noticable once the repeater bug is fixed.

I've heard that some folks will use the bow when they have manyshot active and then switch to the crossbow while it charges up. Its hard to imagine anything competing with a bow on manyshot. For a ranger I think its a good strategy.

For a kensei perhaps a bit less so, but generally speed does trump damage bonuses. With Kensei you would be leaving some of your damage behind whenever you swap weapons.

    Design
Kensei provides a bunch of damage bonuses and fighter has Str and haste boost so its a winner all around in the ranged DPS race. You need to spend one level on arcane archer requirements and that is usually wizard as it is here. Extend spell gives you a bit more use from the buffs wizard also provides which can be handy. The last level is kind of pot luck. I like having a healing option on most builds so I went with rogue for UMD and a smattering of other handy skills at level 1.

With all that in mind we look at stats. Our chief concerns are the dex requirements for improved precise shot (19) and strength for damage bonuses. After than we want as much Con as we can muster. 28pts leaves limited options but in this case we get a fairly decent spread. A little int is in there to help with the wiz casting and for enough skill points to maintain UMD.

Every ranged feat possible is crammed into this one by level 20 so you can shoot and scoot with impunity. UMD gives you a decent shot at self healing so long as you equip for charisma and skill bonuses.

Dude, i respect the way u create these builds. Truly amazing how much u know about all the classes. I do have a question tho. The build is rogue/fighter/wizard. But i thought rangers were the "bow" and "arcane archer" type. So i guess i am asking if the rogue should be ranger?

    hope i made sense lol

    Here's a 28 point, tome-less variant of the Elf Kensei AA build. It's 1 Bard/1 Ranger/18 Fighter.

There's a 32 point version that uses the +2 to all stats tome from the Turbine Store, the key difference is having a maxed Spot at level 20, versus not having that skill at all for this build. (Link: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=283657)

So.... to start off, why the levels in bard and not wizard (for the free Mental Toughness feat)?
A level in bard uncaps use magic device, and I realize that you can't use the low level spells, or any of the level 1 bard abilities AT ALL in this build, you really won't notice the lack of the spells later on. This is also why I chose Feather Fall - it's actually useful throughout the game, provided you buff charisma enough to be able to cast it.

So why a level in ranger, instead of another (say barbarian or rogue)?
A level in ranger gives you Bow Strength for free, this will (effecitvely) give you 5 feats towards improving your melee ability. You also get a Favored Enemy, which gives you increased damage toward certain groups of targets. This starts out as undead, but should be changed later in the game to Evil Outsider (check with Fred in the House Jorasco Enclave). Speaking of melee...

Why should I care about melee?
As backwards as this sounds, there are times when it will be more helpful to put the bow down, and melee. The other reason, since ranger is being taken at 8 in both builds, mostly to prevent a level when you accrue enhancement points without spending them, ranged will not have anywhere near decent damage until you get Bow Strength. With strength as high as it is, you are able to do decent melee DPS in addition to excellent ranged DPS.

Both builds linked assume the use of a longbow as ranged weapon, the first one, assumes the use of a Falchion for the melee weapon:

The same build, adjusted for dual wielding a rapier and a short sword. I would avoid using something that isn't a light weapon in the off-hand, the reduced accuracy penalty for a non-light offhand is can be pretty bad with Power Attack turned on. Also, avoid dual wielding until you have the feat - the reduced accuracy without the feat basically guarantees you won't hit anything. Because of dual-wielding's feat-dependent nature, the feat order has been re-arranged to help you keep some sanity while melee-ing.

    Those builds look like fun!

I got 1 question tho. If the first build isnt made for 2 weapon fighting, why did u take the feat? Or the 2 handed fighting one?

    Cheers,

    Fl0w

**Could someone help me with the questions? i'd really like to start this build but dont know which to take now...Thanks**

The first build is based around using a two hander for melee...

That feat at level 12 is a mistake, and has been corrected.

Answering the rest of your question... probably better to dissect the builds and the splashes.... so you can make a better educated choice.... (I'll assume that you have only the basics fyi) (UMD = Use magic device fyi)

    Why not roll a ranger?
Kensei AA will have similar damage to a Ranger AA on the Ranger's Favored Enemies, but Kensei AA will have higher damage on the ranger's non-favored enemies. Your damage is not conditional based on what you fight. You also have 4 additional feats to do whatever with, so you don't HAVE to be just like a ranger.

Which race is the best for this build?
Elves have higher starting dex (so more points can be spent elsewhere), and enhancements that let you do more damage with a longbow, and make longbows more accurate.

    Alignment?
True Neutral works the best here (can't be targeted by spells that affect lawful, chaotic, or good targets), ideally, you should have high enough UMD to use just about anything you find. I personally like Neutral Good, which lets you use any good weapon without a UMD check (and rarely do you fight good targets in this game). Can't be evil.... which is ...odd.... for a D&D product....

    So what of the classes?
You will need 18 levels of fighter for Kensei III, which gives you the foundation of your damage. You will need at least one level in bard, wizard, or sorcerer.

So with the splashes, what do each of them give you?
    • Fighter
Level 19 in fighter doesn't give you anything. Don't do it.
    • Sorcerer
      A few level 1 spells
Access to the enhancement so you can take AA later on.
Unlocks ability to use some wands without a UMD check
    • Wizard
Free class feat, most commonly taken feat is Mental Toughness, which frees up an enhancement point to put somewhere else
      A few level 1 spells.
Access to the enhancement so you can take AA later on.
Unlocks ability to use some wands without a UMD check
    • Bard
      A few level 1 spells.
Access to the enhancement so you can take AA later on.
Unlocks UMD (so you can have more than 20 ranks in it at level 20)
If you put 3 ranks into perfom: Fascinate (mez enemy, based on perform skill, which will be low), and +1 morale bonus to attack rolls, damage rolls, and saves against charm and fear.
Unlocks ability to use some wands without a UMD check.
      +1
    • Rogue
      Unlocks UMD
1d6 additional damage to your target when it's not targeting you.
    • Ranger
Free Bow Strength (which frees up that feat slot for something else)
Favored Enemy, which is 2 damage to whenever something is whatever your FE is (undead until you hit level cap.... after that, evil outsider?). See Fred in House Jorasco's Enclave to change this later.
Unlocks ability to use some wands without a UMD check.
    • Barbarian
      10% movement speed increase
      Rage (see: http://ddowiki.com/page/Rage_(barbarian))
    • Cleric
      A few level 1 spells
Cleric is Divine casting class (not arcane), so it doesn't help unlock Arcane Archer
Turn Undead is useless without more cleric levels
Unlocks ability to use some wands without a UMD check.
    • Paladin
+1 Bonus to AC and saving throws
You're charisma is going to be so low, you aren't going to be doing much (successful) smiting.
You MUST be lawful good to be a paladin.
Unlocks ability to use some wands without a UMD check.

If we look at the above list, you need either a level in bard, sorcerer, or wizard to unlock Arcane Archer. Sorcerer doesn't bring as much to the table as bard or wizard do, so the choice needs to factor in the other class. One of the two splashes need to unlock UMD, because UMD is THAT important.

So, with the classes, you have the 1d6 of sneak attack damage from the Rogue, a free feat and Favored Enemy with the Ranger, or the Rage ability with the Barbarian. For me, the free feat that Ranger gives, in addition to the +2 damage to certain targets (undead, which you will see A LOT of throughout most of the game), made ranger the one that stands out above the rest. Because I didn't choose rogue, I have to take bard as the other class, and I'd rather start with bard, and leave ranger until later, so my UMD stays pretty high throughout most of my level experience, which means I can play around with wands, and perform some additional support roles IN ADDITION to the DPS that Kensei AA brings to the table. Again, the choice on the two classes to splash is totally up to you. Keep in mind that a second level of a class generally doesn't add as much as a second class will.

So what to do with the extra feats?
You can use three of them on Dodge/Mobility/Shot on the Run (which removes the accuracy penalty for moving and shooting), but until ranged DPS's attack speed increases, Shot on the Run isn't that good.

If you want to be creative, you can peruse http://ddowiki.com/page/Feats and pick whichever feats you want to spend those slots on.

    Or....

You can choose to focus on melee, and give yourself yet another tool at your disposal, and you can bring more to the group. Ideally, you will want to have Power Attack, the appropriate Improved Critical, and either:
    Two-Weapon Fighting
    Improved Two-Weapon Fighting
    Greater Two-Weapon Fighting
    OR
    Two-Handed Fighting
    Improved Two-Handed Fighting
    Greater Two-Handed Fighting

Those five traits will be enough of a boost to melee damage (in addition to the enhancements), to make it a plan B when sitting and shooting the bow isn't such a hot idea. Since you're going to have a high strength score anyways, damage and accuracy aren't going to be terrible either. If you decided against taking a level in ranger, I would still take Improved Critical and Power Attack, but not take Greater Two-Weapon Fighting, or Greater Two-Handed Fighting.

    Which brings us to weapons.....
Personally, I went with a falchion (and two handed fighting), because that would allow me to basically ignore melee, and it would still remain good enough, until I had all the pieces of ranged I needed. A falchion also ties in strongly to your racial enhancements. Power Attack's bonus also increase while you are wielding a two handed weapon, so you will hit pretty hard.

If you go two-weapon fighting, go with a rapier and a short sword, but set the improved crit for piercing, and NOT slashing. You could dual wield rapiers, but you might run into accuracy issues with Power Attack turned on.

Hopefully that helps with figuring some of this out =)

Thanks for the information. I will have to read it a few times to get the full grasp of it.

Still, i got 1 remaining question. Why start as a bard? I thought starting with a fighter gives more hp and weapon/armor proficiencies. Then at level 2 pick bard and then level fighter to the end?

    Am i making sense? lol

    cheers,

    Fl0w

    That's a heck of a write-up.

    Have +some.

    Edit:
Fielding the bard first question - probably same reason as you always want to take Rogue first if you plan on splashing that. The extra multiple of skill points you get at first level, so more bang for your quarter. You still get the extra feat when you take your first level of Fighter.

16 extra skill pts: at 1st lvl bards get (6 + INT mod) * 4; ftrs only get (2 + INT mod) * 4. Also it unlocks UMD as a class skill right away. Since 1st lvl flies by before you notice, there's virtually no reason to start ftr instead.

Updated the Two Handed Fighting (aka: Falchion/Longbow) build to work with taking a level in ranger first. This will keep your bow damage pretty good throughout your leveling experience, instead of being less than stellar your first 8 levels.

    **build**
Edit: Rewrote response to the build after attempting to recreate yours in the DDO Char Generator.

Here's the errors with the build:
You have 4 unspent stat points after creation.
No advice on which skills to take, or how they should be ranked.
You have an enhancement for a wizard without taking a level in wizard (should be the bard one).
Can't take Improved Two Handed Fighting at 16 because your strength is too low, which makes it impossible to take Greater Two Handed Fighting.
Your final strength is lower than posted.

One of the reasons why I'm not a fan of Fighter Extra Action Boost, you're going to have 8 actions per rest from Kensei III, do you really need a 9th?
10 points to get a clicky that gives you a +30% attack speed boost that also triggers the cooldown for accuracy boost AND it's uses. I can see how that's useful with Multishot, but is it worth sacrificing a +1 to strength and dexterity over?

Maybe you should update to the newest char planner (http://www.rjcyberware.com/DDO) and give us a generated copy and paste?

Also, that tool is an excellent one for use while leveling.

After poking around with the build calculator a bit more.... taking bard at 8 sacrifices the 3 ranks in performance needed to get a bard buff, but has no detriment to UMD in the long run (it's just less than optimal for a while).

Ranger first, on the however hand, allows you to ranged with Bow Strength from creation until the end game, rather than having ranged "turn on" at 8 (leaving you doing mostly melee until then).

Personally, if I can squeeze more stuff out of a build, I'd do so, which is why I initially posted a build with bard first. However, I can totally understand if you wanted to take ranger first - in the end, it's the difference of a buff, and one that's not going to make that big of a difference later on.

I am a fan of the bard/ranger version as well but I think half elf is better for this build.

Rogue Dilletante for 1d6 sneak attack, adaptability, versatility, and healing amp vs costly elf bow enhancements and maybe enchantment resistance.

Could cause a problem with starting stats for 28 pters without a +2 dex tome though.

I worked it out on a 32 point build (IMO both the race Half Elf and 32 point build are outside the scope of this thread, that aside), and until we get the dilettante enhancements, it's still a little flat. You end up with a little more health, for accuracy, and conditionally more damage than the elf version. One of the nice perks, you get a damage clicky that can be used at the same time as accuracy and multishot, which is spiffy, but overall..... I'd wait until after update 8.
