Default Bloodbeard (DPS dwarven pally/rogue/monk Tank - By Request: Riprock)

    Build Name: Bloodbeard
    Author: Sigfried Trent
    Requester: Riprock
    Last Updated: 08/10/10

Key Words [Paladin, Tank, TWF, UMD]

The requester wanted a dwarven intim-tank using rogue and paladin with UMD that could deal out some hurt. He also wanted to have solo viability.

I’ve done rogue heavy tanks and they can be decent, but ultimately suffer a bit in durability and struggle to get AC going. Fighter works best for those. A Paladin/Rogue can work but to get DPS going and to keep AC high the usual turtle up technique won’t work. What you can do is go with a robe wearing monk splash to leverage wisdom/dex and use TWF for the beat down.

Rogue helps on the damage dealing and its required for UMD but too much will compromise defenses. Paladin either likes to go 2-3 levels as a splash or go all out. In this case to combine DPS and Defense (which paladin does well) all out is the way to go. Enhancements are really tight and most of what you want to buy comes past level 10 so the picks are odd on this build. Likely you would respec from time to time as you level up to keep all your points working in your favor. Once you get to level 12 it settles down.

What we are buying here is mostly paladin focusing on AC bonuses and Smite Damage as well as leveraging dwarf for hit points, axe damage, and spell saves. Feats are supporting intimidate and DPS and monk does double duty here giving us two of our feats.

AC develops kind of slowly and full tanking AC requires some serious item hunting at the upper levels. If you don’t have the hear, you will be more of an off tank or DPS in most parties. AC should be fine for the trash mobs but will fall short of raid bosses without the usual array of dodge items and buffs from ranger and bard.

Saves and hit points are quite solid without any fancy gear at all, and with it they are really great. This guy really doesn’t have any weaknesses. This makes solo play pretty easy although you will be using wands to heal between fights until UMD is high enough to throw a heal scroll and that can take a while. Lay on hands is decent but its very limited and self healing was not on the table for this one.

DPS is good, quite good. The only thing missing is massive strength. You will hit 30+ but going above that will take consumables and short term buffs. But the smites and various damage buffs will all around deliver very solid damage. With up to 200% hate amp, you have the option of hate tanking or intim tanking which can be nice depending on the situation. You also have fists and sometimes those are going to be better than axes (say on skeletons or oozes). Its nice to have.

No rogue skills past level 4 or so other than a bit of lock picking. There just wasn’t any way to squeeze that in. Intim is pretty good and UMD should be quite workable.

Do traps while you have the rogue tag just to be polite to groups. After that no one should expect it from you. At lower levels, tanking likely involves armor and shield to get a good AC. You need those stat bumps to make the robes and TWF have a better AC. Make good use of smite and divine sacrifice as they are key to augmenting your DPS. If you aren’t actually playing tank, don’t pull agro with intim, you do more damage when you don’t have agro. Tanks like buffs, carry lots of scrolls and potions so you never have to go naked.

28pts is hard and I wouldn’t recommend trying it. You could take this same build and move it from intim to purely hate tanking or abandon tanking and make it DPS only which would let you concentrate ability scores a bit.

For anyone looking at this build I would like to say that builds like this are very fun to play and are great at solo'ing

I know this is quite a resurrection, but I would assume this build is still viable.

What weapons do you see this character using most? Unarmed or Dwarven Axes?

I don't think its changed much in terms of what I would do with it so I think its still very workable and a fun character.

I built it with dwarven axes in mind, but I would use unarmed against skeletons and slimes. If you have a killer set of handwraps I would certainly use them. The monk levels on this build are mostly about getting some extra feats.
