    Default Stormin' Sherman - dwarf rogue 2 / barb 6 / ftr 12 DPS tank

    Stormin' `cause he can Rage, Sherman like the tank! Yeah, OK, that was lame - but hey, clever nicknames aren't as easy to come up with as some people think!

    Anyway, this build is an experiment, inspired in part by Thanimal's Batman 9.4, which goes for rogue 8 in part for Improved Uncanny Dodge for a short-term AC boost; and in part by someone who suggested combining Frenzied Berserker with Stalwart Defender. This is neither a max-DPS build nor a max-AC tank, but a hybrid for people who like to switch between the two. My goals were: reasonably high AC, high Intimidate, good DPS, UMD, and Evasion.

    Basically this build has two modes of operation: in DPS mode, you whip out a greataxe, turn on PA, and hit Rage and/or Frenzy; in tank mode, you switch to dwarven axe & tower shield, turn on CE, and use Defensive Stance & IUD for short-term defensive boosts as necessary.

    This is my first time trying to do an endgame-oriented build, so I could use some help with figuring out all the calcs (stats, AC, etc.) as well as picking gear.


    I went dwarf for the extra CON, free dwarven axe proficiency, boosts to Balance & saves, and Armor Mastery, axe, & tactics enhs. But human and WF are also good options, I think.


    Initially I wanted to take my barbarian levels first, so I could get the DPS & AC boost from Frenzied Berserker & Imp Uncanny Dodge ASAP. But then I decided I didn't want to delay all my feats that long, so I focused on fighter after the first few levels.


    I listed a +2 Supreme tome, but all you really need is a +1 INT for CE and +1 CHA for FoP. And FoP isn't really a req, but it provides a nice boost to Will saves and lets you ignore WIS entirely. Final stats would look something like this:

    STR 34 = 16 base + 5 lvl-ups + 6 item + 1 ftr enh + 2 tome + 1 Litany + 3 exceptional (+6 Raged, +3 Defensive stance)
    DEX 26 = 14 base + 6 item + 2 tome + 1 Litany + 3 exceptional (28 if +3 tome + 1 rogue enh)
    CON 28 = 16 base + 6 item + 2 tome + 1 Litany + 3 exceptional (+6 Raged, +3 Defensive stance)
    INT 15 = 12 base + 2 tome + 1 Litany
    WIS 11 = 8 base + 2 tome + 1 Litany
    CHA 24 = 12 base + 6 item + 2 tome + 1 Litany + 3 exceptional


    For skills, max UMD & Intimidate, of course; beyond that is up to you - Balance, Jump, maybe Haggle, Open Lock or Spot are all options.

    Intimidate 68 = 23 ranks + 15 item + 6 Shroud item + 7 CHA + 3 SF Intim + 2 Bullheaded + 2 ftr enhs + 4 Stalwart Defender II + 2 luck + 4 Greater Heroism
    UMD 50 = 23 ranks + 5 item + 6 Shroud item + 7 CHA + 3 SF UMD + 2 luck + 4 Greater Heroism


    If I've added right, the max DEX bonus with mithral tower shields for this build is 9: base 4 + 3 ftr Tower Shield enhs + 2 SD II. I've taken enough Armor Mastery enhs to have the same from mithral breastplate. So presuming I'm right and ideally manage to hit DEX 28, AC should look something like this:

    Not too shabby for a non-minmaxed AC build, IMHO. Did I miss anything or any better gear I should be looking at?


    I went with THF rather than TWF, mostly for the extra glancing blows (esp. w/Frenzied Berserker), which I figure is useful for hate-tanking; but also because almost all of my builds are dual-wielders, so I thought it was time I tried THF for a change. Still, it's easy enough to switch to TWF feats instead; just bump base DEX up another point, with the added bonus of making it a little easier to hit DEX 28. The rest are a hodge-podge of feats which try to balance everything this build tries to do: DPS (PA, Cleave, Imp Crit); AC (Dodge, CE); skill bonuses (Bullheaded, SF Intim & UMD); Will saves (Bullheaded, FoP); and even a CC feat (Imp Trip).

    Not super-awesome (wish Will was at least 30), but not terrible either, IMHO. +2 to Will when raged, +6 to Reflex with IUD, +2 vs poison & spells (racial bonus).


    Here's where things get really tight, as there are (unsurprisingly) more enhs I want than points I have to spend, particularly with two PrEs. So I tried to spread my points fairly evenly; took barb enhs for DPS boosts and ftr enhs for AC boosts.


    Not sure what to go for here. I consider Litany of the Dead a no-brainer; and I calculated my AC presuming I would go for Chattering Ring and Levik's Defender set. Beyond that and the +6 regular and +3 exceptional stat items I need, I'm open to suggestions as to what I should be aiming for.


    In particular, is it any better than, say, rogue 2 / fighter 18 SD III? Honestly, I don't know. Giving up barb 6 would cost me IUD, Rage, PA enhs, +10% run speed, and 12 skill points. But I would gain 4 feats (presuming I drop Cleave as well) and a bunch of enh pts; so I could slot in some Weap Focus & Spec feats and extra DPS enhs to make up for the loss of Rage; and my next AC bump from SD III would help make up for losing IUD.

    But that's why I post the build here; to get some feedback on whether or not it's worthwhile.

    It's late at night, so forgive me if I missed something, but why is the starting stat for charisma 12 on a dwarf, isn't that quite expensive, and what function does it serve? Those points could go into dex or wis. Are you sure you didn't mean this build to be 2 Rogue/6 Pally/12 Fighter?

    CHA 12 is for UMD, Intimidate, and to put FoP within reach with a CHA tome for a boost to Will saves (1 less stat to worry about). If you look at Batman 9.4, you'll see he has even higher base CHA and ends 4 pts higher than Sherman. Worth the build points? Maybe not - that's why I posted to get some feedback.

    Part of the goal of this build was to get Imp Uncanny Dodge like Batman 9.4 for a short-term +6 AC boost; while I was at it, I figured Rage & Frenzy provide a nice boost to DPS and who doesn't like running faster? Paladin 6 definitely has a lot going for it, but I'd lose that AC boost.

    Like I said, this is my first time putting together a build like this, so I need some help working it out.

    yea, making wis a dump stat with force of personality is worth it..and boosts that intim/umd/will save really well.

    and you look prettier.
