    Default Wizard Specialization

    I want to be a specialist wizard! Right now, in DDO, even after taking the appropriate Spell Focus feats, you're really only a generalist wizard. In PnP, a wizard could sacrifice the use of two schools to specialize in one. This translated into 1 bonus spell per level from your chosen school.

    The easiest way to implement this in DDO is either 1) a discount on spells from the chosen school (10%-20% would be sufficient) or 2) a bonus to caster level when casting spells of that level (+1 or +2 is enough, the largest benefit of this is for spell penetration checks.).

    However, that's not very sexy, so I thought up some other ideas based on each school:

    Enchantment:
    For Charm and Dominate spells, your caster level is added to the time between saves.

    Necromancy:
    Nearby monsters become shaken for 1 min when you cast a necromancy spell. (No save)
    OR
    Enervation and Energy Drain deal 1 additional negative level.

    Evocation:
    Your damage spells deal additional untyped damage equal to your caster level (added before feats/enhancements).

    Conjuration:
    Your summoned creatures receive an additional +2 to all stats (that stacks with Augment Summoning).

    Transmutation:
    Your Extended beneficial Transmutaion spells cost 2 SP less than normal.

    Abjuration:
    You gain spell resistance 5 that stacks with all other sources of spell resistance.
    OR
    You gain energy resistance (all types) 3 that stacks with all other sources of energy resistance.

    Divination:
    You gain a +1 insight bonus to saves.

    Illusion:
    Nearby monsters become disoriented for 1 min (-2 to attack rolls) when you cast an Illusion spell. (No save)

    I tried to keep the bonuses small enough to not need to justify giving up an entire school of magic, let alone two. There really aren't enough spells in the game to justify that. Let me know what you think.

    The only reason I believe that this wouldn't work is simply because we don't have that many useful spells as it is now. Granted, if they added several spells of each school and fixed the ones that were already there, I believe this would be a great idea. However (pretty sure you play pnp) but if you look under the Player Handbook II for wizards they have an Immediate Magic Variant that is pretty much what you are saying under you specialization list.

    The only thing that I'm worried about with this are the non-pnp players. I know I was in the porable hole with my wizard and someone was asking me "How do I know what school my spell is?" Now I know the game shouldn't be built around those types of people however, if your idea was added, we would need a more detailed introduction into schools of magic.

    Also, listing several schools that would be useless to specialize in DDO: Aburation, Divination, Illusion, and maybe transmutation.

    Again these are only my thoughts so take them as you want.

    Granted there aren't enough spells to make all the schools worth specializing in, but it would encourage more spells to come out. It would also add more flavor to the game.

    I'm aware of the suggestions in Unearthed Arcana and PHBII, I'm just not as familiar with them as I am my other books and I'm at away from them right now.

    Learning your school is easy. You just open your spell book and check. It even tells you during character creation and while leveling up.

    With the suggestions I post above, it would be worth specializing, if only for those benefits alone. Granted, no one is likely to get Spell Focus: Abjuration any time soon, but the benefits for specializing would help any build.
