    Excerpts from Level 13

    Author's Notes

And so ends the era of the Path of Inevitable Dominion which instead ushers in the era of the Path of Harmonious Balance. Now that I can breach the 100% divine healing point with a combination of Levik's Bracers, Warforged Healer's Friend II, and Monk Improved Recovery II it becomes worthwhile to use Fists of Light (along with the addition of Walk of the Sun, being I often have Power Attack on). Farewell, Touch of Death, I will miss you (and Stunning Fist might start seeing more action now ).

    Leveling Information
Switch feat Path of Inevitable Dominion with Path of Harmonious Balance, causing a reset of my enhancements.
Gained Ranger Sprint Boost I, Ranger Favored Damage I, Monk WIS II, Monk Improved Recovery II, Healer's Friend II, Way of the Monkey III, Warforged Tactics I, Racial Toughness II, Warforged Power Attack II, Adept of Flame, Master of Thunder, and Master of Stone after leveling to level 13.

Agree with you about Stormvauld's MrCow, it's my favorite quest around that level. Provided you don't miss a corpse or gem, it's good xp/time. Only downside of it is that so much of the xp is from optionals instead of base xp.

Great thread, and the arcane one also. I generally give up on soloing melees by around L12, but watching your vids, you are invising past a lot of stuff...I generally go through trying to kill everything on the way which becomes more and more difficult by L12. When I see a troll in front of me, I have to go hit it, I need to learn to be sneakier =/

I can't wait to see your Zawabi's Revenge vid, I didn't think you would be able to solo that. I solo it on my wizard, but never even tried with a melee, just seemed like it would be really difficult for most melee aside from arcane archers. I'm assuming you ranged her to death? I can't imagine you went toe to toe with her, but that would be an amazing vid if you did =)

That video is probably about a week away from being uploaded at the rate I've had to upload them.

Yes, I did range Queen Lailat. The character I used has rather poor burst healing and in the raid Queen Lailat has a large hit range, so melee was suicide. I had a fair amount of specialist equipment and innate abilities for the occasion that made it feasible (+2 Holy Longbow of Greater Evil Outsider Bane, Evasion, Mantle of the Worldshaper, Voice of the Master, several Divine Power clickables for my BAB when using a bow, Goggles with Waves of Exhaustion, and a bucket of Deneith Cold Iron Arrows). Even with all that stuff, the quest isn't without danger or anything. Getting crippled by a gnoll archer towards the end can still cause large issues, which was actually the cause of my death on my first attempt.

The Sentinel's quests were run on elite on this character (as someone did mention that would like for me to do them) so they have been added. The quest footage will come with the rest of the level 13/14 stuff when I get around to them.

And the Stormreaver bit the dust. This one actually took me a couple tries as I ran out of time on two previous attempts (one because the place was flooded with air elementals and I had trouble hitting the Stormreaver with red dungeon alert, the other because I ran outta Repair Serious Damage potions, both times the Rod of Teleport from the Festivus Egg Hunt saved my bacon).

Its almost saddening to say I had a lot more trouble on Grundaussir the White Dragon and Jorgundal in Gianthold Tor than I did in this raid.

    Excerpts from Level 15

    Author's Notes

After a couple of levels without Touch of Death I've noticed I use Stunning Fist as a form of substitute, which generally works fine being it is enhanced with Past Life: Fighter and Warforged Tactics III.

This was a level where I had to rely a fair amount on hirelings to get through some of the near-level quests, as one is required for Flesh Maker's Laboratory, Gianthold Tor, and make Desecrated Temple of Vol (for the end fight) and Prison of the Planes (for switches) much easier. I had to do a couple of takes on Flesh Maker's Laboratory because most of the hirelings die pretty quickly when air elementals are around.

It has also been a good 5 months or so since I did Gianthold Tor, so it was fun to go in solo. I did have a couple of deaths (one on the Black Dragon fight because Blaze hit me repeatedly with Disintegrations that I didn't save on and one on the White Dragon fight due to Jorgundal doing Cometfall fun on the hireling while Grundaussir froze me solid). The White Dragon fight, after a couple failures as the hireling's SP didn't go far enough (or she died being the Cometfalls will hit them now and then) I did that fight on casual just to get it overwith.

While this level did take me a while to get through, it was still enjoyable doing things I never did alone with a melee type, including Gianthold Tor and The Reaver's Fate. Gianthold and The Orchard of the Macabre are rarely a letdown.

    Leveling Information

    Default A question on Casual

After a couple runs yesterday in GH on casual (PoP and Madstone) I was wondering if you are using casual as an exp point. PoP, with optionals and no exp pot, was a net of ~8000 exp. Mastone was (6133 for quest at end, 3 optionals at 1833 each). For the very very short time need for alot of high exp quest, casual seems like a good exp farm starting point. Just wondered if you are using it or just doing n/h/e always.

Casual gives roughly a bit less than half the overall EXP of a quest done on normal. Unless someone absolutely must run the quest on casual, it is almost always a lower EXP-per-minute ratio doing casual for EXP purposes.

We currently have +10% EXP going which boosts both the EXP gained from the quest's base EXP as well as the amount from optionals. Your data will be a bit skewed due to this.

Yeah, I know, that is why i mentioned no exp pots.

I can also see where you are coming from, but the option is there for possible exp, and first time bonus. Can't be any worse exp than the 8th or 9th time through.

Yeah, true, casual difficulty can be used for the first time EXP bonus. However, I still consider the casual difficulty an abomination and thus will generally stay away.

I bought a new hard drive, so the quests I completed more recently should be available in much better clarity (as I can now afford to retain the bigger crisper video files).

    Grats.

Yea it's a pretty sad state they left this quest in. I'd almost feel guilty if I found a +3 tome in there in it's current form.

The fact this joke of a raid has +3 tomes on normal, and the rather challenging Titans awakes has +2 even on elite doesn't make any sense. Hell hound normal or vod normal also only have +2's and are also much more challenging.

Really just need a quickfix to the elementals to revert them to their previous knock your butt around like crazy forms.. If only for that raid. (code obviously still exists since Aurora in the demons den currently posses that ability)

As I know solo this on elite just for completions on my 20 evasion Sorc, it is a bit silly. I was worried but I never even had a close time. I know lvl 16 quest and I'm and 20.. but this is a RAID, a quest that should challenge 12 player characters. The fact is there are several raids that still only need 3-6 people, this makes it a touch boring for the other 9-6 peeps there sitting on that ladder.

As always Cow, great work on this thread and it's always nice to run with ya.

As much as you hate casual, it a part of the game now, might as well use it if you can.. hehe.

As a melee type with moderate AC near the level of the quest, though, it does pose a bit more of a challenge. You do have a time limit of ~20 minutes while needing to deal a good enough amount of damage to take down the Stormreaver. When your best form of healing is a Potion of Repair Serious Damage the Stormreaver double-hitting in the 35 range this also forces you to adapt to a different set of tactics to pull through The Reaver's Fate.

Yes, the raid can be soloed, but there are at least certain thresholds that someone needs to have to complete it alone.

Cow man, this is not to belittle you at all!!

What you pulled off was steller, and an amazing show of skill. My commit is just that it is silly to have a Raid quest that can hold 12 people when one person can do the whole thing by themself.

There are a few issues at the moment with a couple segments in the Gianthold Tor run and The Cursed Crypt run, so I have pulled out the video segments for now. They should be back up in their intended state in a couple days (with the exception that the Gianthold Tor White Dragon fight will be devoid of sound).

You mean like Twilight Forge Core? I used to love soloing that one until they changed the Twilight Forge.

While making the 12 folks feel crucial in a raid is a nice idea to achieve, one does have to remember that raids are in essence just quests that allow twice the normal group size.

    Excerpts from Level 16

    Author's Notes

Level 16... also known to me as the Litany of the Dead level (being I generally get half of level 16 there). Good thing I like Litany of the Dead.

Good ol' quivering palm. I get to play with that this level. It is always nice for making fire and air elementals (or later, gelatinous cubes and oozes) go poof being they don't stun.

It has been a bit, but I brandished some non-monk weaponry this level for Acid Wit, being the Acidstone Elementals have a rather high AC compared to most standard-fare critters (~42, I wasn't play close attention), but they have absolutely poor will saves. So, due to this, I brought out some banishing poking things to poke them back to their native plane. It was a pain to pop Power Attack and Wind Stance back on after each elemental, but it was still faster than a beatdown with fists.

Also, for a beholder, Knizzlenak the puzzle loving Beholder seems to have a rather high Strength score, as I couldn't make him helpless via my standard beholder STR debuffs (Exhaustion, Ray of Enfeeblement).

My other highlights for this level include guiding a Pickup Group through Inferno of the Damned, doing an Elite Zawabi's Refuge (the fleshling armors dropped, one Demon Scale Armor, one Maralith Chain), and the bulk of the level was consumed doing many runs through Litany of the Dead.

Love reading your posts MrCow :-) Its good to see somebody proof of concept the solo path :-) And documenting it so very well.

    I have a couple questions.

I notice that you run unimpeded by water in a lot of the instances. What effect/item allows you to move so fast through the water in sewers for example. I ask because when I run through the water, then when almost to end, I warp back to start going slowly.. It drives me nuts :-p

What is the effect you use which enables you to jump across bigger than normal horizontal distances ??

In your experience is there a sweet spot for the jump skill ? Beyond which you go too high, or too far, and thus bounce, or miss what your aiming for ??

I have a low latency often when playing (~30.0 ms) so I often don't have the issues you are describing, which do show themselves in DDO when people have a change in run speed or collision detection occurs. Other than that, I have no items or effects to other than an innately high run speed.

Freedom of Movement, as a side note, will allow you to run at normal speed on the watery sewer slopes.

Abundant Step. Obtained at Monk level 12. It is very handy and a load of fun.

The sweet spot is 40 for most folks (including buffs), as that is the highest you can get it before it caps out with no tangible gains. For situations when you are in dispel heavy areas, I find an unbuffed 25 (in the later levels) to be enough for my needs to get around Flesh Renders and whatnot.

Ideally, you want a jump high enough to jump over or around a large monster (Bearded Devil, Orthon, Ogre, Troll, Hezrou, and other things of that size).
