Default Suggest me a few movies to rent this weekend

Like the title says, I need a list of good movies to watch over the weekend. Almost anything goes, I'm not that picky. The only exception being horror movies which I don't find entertaining, at all. If you need help narrowing the choices, I have a penchant for comedies. Also, the only movie I have seen in the last two years is Watchmen.

    Thanks in advance.

If you haven't seen "I love you, man", or "Forgetting Sara Marshell", those are both pretty darn funny.

    Monster Camp

It's a movie about a LARP group based in the Seattle area. I just saw it a few days ago, and I thought it was fascinating. I myself don't LARP - but I am an avid gamer. And... LARP folk seem to be pariahs even in the gaming community. This movie gives a rather good look at the people who enjoy this offshoot of gaming, investing much of themselves to it in the process.

The movie focuses mostly on the NPCs of the group - the monsters, and that is the basis of the title.

This movie in no way made me want to attend a LARP group any more than I did before seeing it... but it made me understand the people who love LARP a little bit better.

One of Tom Hanks' finer performances.

Okay, I lied. I saw the French dub of I Love You, Beth Cooper not so long ago. It was to bad I wanted to die. It's a good pick, for "bad movies nights".

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Having had two roommates that were brilliant LARPers and met several of their friends, I understand how fun the more political LA can be even if I never participated in one myself. I often got carried by their storytelling, as they were telling me what they did the previous night or what their plan for the next week was.

I never got the 'beating ppl with foam sticks' part though.

If you haven't seen any of these you should:
    Boondock Saints
    Schindler's List
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
    Dr. Strangelove
    Patton
    Unforgiven
    Young Frankenstein
    The Producers (the remake, 2005?)
    Blazing Saddles

My personal favorite is when a LARPer was being arrested, once: "You can't arrest me, I'm wearing boots of evasion!"

I think that the cause of the crime was also absurd, and was related to magic missile, but that's a three years old story read in a boring philosophy class so I don't remember it well.

I understand you speak French, if so go for some French movies:

Public Enemy Number One Part 1 aka L'instinct de mort + Public Enemy Number One Part 1 aka L'ennemi public n°1
Not to be mistaken with the Public Enemies movie. Has Vincent Cassel's best performance ever, also has Depardieu in a small secondary role.

    Spoorloos aka The Vanishing
Labeled as horror on IMDB but it's just a thriller, there is not a single drop of blood in the whole movie. Slow paced movie that blew me away 1 week after I saw it, for the first week I hated it. The first dialog lines are in Belgian, afterwards they switch to French.

    Le Couperet
Black humor movie. Has comedic and absurd situations but it's not a comedy.

    Caché
Has Auteuil and Binoche in it. It's tense, sad and disturbing. The scene holding the key to the movie is easy to miss, I had to watch the ending one more time in order to find it.

And some Korean movies I saw a few weeks ago, the revenge trilogy from Chan-wook Park:
    - Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
    - Oldboy
    - Lady Vengeance

There is no connection between the 3 movies other than the revenge theme so you can watch them in any order you want.
    Mjoll. CLAW. Thelanis.

.... That sounds like a skit done in Reno 911 (or whatever that comedy central show was) I don't know which came first mind you.

edit: I'm guessing Memnir tried to link a vid of what I was thinking for you.l

For a decent recent commedy you could go for Monsters Vs Aliens.

If you want something a little more serious, I've always enjoyed "The Shawshank Redemption". In a similar vein is "The last Castle".

If you like star wars, you gotta watch "Spaceballs". Its a spoof of SW from back before the whole "scary movie" style infected hollywood and made such movies unbearable. "Gremlins" is a pretty funny horror-ish flick. The effects are terrible by today's standards, and were pretty bad even back when it came out heh.

If you're looking for laughs, how about Hot Fuzz? Simon Pegg and Nick Frost do not disappoint.

hmmm are you looking for new releases or old classics?

I was forced into watching Four Christmasses this weekend by the wife and actually found it to be funny...

I also watched the new Star Trek again and it's not too bad.

For some older movuies here are a few....

Enemy at the Gates - Jude Law and Ed Harris. great story about a Polish sniper during the battle of Stalingrad in WW2.

The Departed - if you haven't seen it already.

Wedding Crashers - I would guess you've seen this already, but if not it is a must rent.

Hidalgo - Good flick with Viggo from Lord of the Rings
    Argonessenn -Officer of Storm Shadow-
    Olen Anteres
