Default The Switch Hitter (a buid by request)

This build is from Sigtrent's build request thread

    Build Name: Switch Hitter
    Author: Sigfried Trent
    Requester: Thame
    Last Updated: 07/14/10

Key Words [Tank, DPS, TWF, Human, Intimidate]

    Objectives
The request was for a full on tank with heavy duty AC that could still dole out decent damage, probably using a Kopesh. He wanted Human or Dwarf and did not care too much about class. My basic take on this hasn’t changed much but it has become quite a lot better thanks to the level cap and prestige enhancements.

    Design
I wanted to go Stalwart Defender as its probably the best of the intim-tank prestige classes and intim-tank is pretty much king in the AC department. It did want to see some of the saves you get from Defender of Siberys so I splashed paladin to bump all around saves and the extra aura AC doesn’t hurt.

Feats progress a bit choppy, starting with offense, then a set of defense, then back to offense and so on. I end up with the full TWF lines and the full weapon spec lines for slashing which is quite a bit of offense. On the tank side all the usual culprits are there plus some bonuses to intimidate. I happen to like the dragon mark over skill focus intim as the shield of faith frees an inventory slot and provides early access to a good deflection bonus.

I took the trick from the excellent Hurtlocker build of doing the feats such that you can enhancement swap for the Kensai prestige enhancement if you care to go all DPS all the time. I don’t have the multiple toughness feats so HP may be a little shy of some dedicated tanks, but it does have some healing amplification to make incoming heals count more.

I also tossed in UMD since I had the skill points and a feat slot for skill focus. With gear it should be enough to activate although perhaps now when suited up in tanking gear. It also won’t be too useful until late in the builds life. Not much more to say other than it kicks a lot of ass both on offense and defense.

    Play
Since it doesn’t really have any weaknesses, its hard to say much about special play here. Learn the ropes of tanking and beating things up. Be nice to your healers because you will need them from time to time.

    Variations
Due to the number of feats you can switch things up to focus more in one area or another. The same goes for enhancements. I somewhat shorted the build on tower shield use but you could swap that out for the healing amp. I tend to dislike tower shields due to the armor penalties on them.

Cool Love this build....now what do I do?

I followed this build to a tee. When mod 9 hits what should I take for levels 17-20. I considered 2 lvls of monk for evasion and the rest fighter. Or maybe 4 lvls of ranger? I just like the thought of having evasion. Any reason not to take it?

    Thanks in advance

The Switch Hitter a Lawful Good Human Paladin 3 / Fighter 13
    Requested By: Thame

    Introduction
Thame wanted a true tank character that really emphasized Ac but also used a kopesh for as much DPS as you can muster sword and board. He preferred either human or dwarf and wasn’t too picky about class. So my primary mission was to mix DPS and AC but to really max out AC as much as I could in that context.

I actually made two builds, the other is a very tanky dwarf with tactics and focused on one handed. This was my first thought though, and I like this build better overall. The idea here is to be able to go for a very strong defense, and then switch over to a very strong offense depending on the situation. Since a tank was requested it starts with more tank feats but it ends with some pretty heavy duty Two handed fighting abilities.

I like it because it can really deliver on both accounts. Not quite the AC of a pure paladin, and not quite the DPS of a pure barbarian, but you get nearly 90% of each in the same build and you have some other nice tricks up your sleeves to boot.

If your split is already 13/3 i´d finish it with 14 / 6. to get the 1st tier of the Paladin PrE.

Yes, taking 2 levels in Monk / Rogue / Ranger would have been better than taking the 13th and 14th level of Fighter, but still not so much that an reroll is requiered if you still have fun playing the character. He willl definetly be able to pull his weigh.

I would even consider taking 13 fighter 7 pally for the next tier of divine sacrifice to boost your damage output.... since your mana bar that you acquire for all intensive purposes is useless anyway... also gives an increase towards your LoH..

This build is very interesting to me, and looks to be very close to what I want to build to tank for our small, dedicated guild. How would you change this build to accommodate a 28 pt build?

    So sad but true.
