Default Clockwork Rogue (a build by request)

This build is from Sigtrent's build request thread

    Build Name: Dragon Mechanic
    Author: Sigfried Trent
    Requester: Nicor123
    Last Updated: 07/15/10

Key Words [Tanks, Rogue, Mechanic, Warforged]

The request was an odd one. They wanted a Warforged Rogue13/Paladin3 using weapon finesse, combat expertise, and improved critical piercing on a 28pt build and the rest whatever I like. These are things that don’t all naturally go together. The finesse and rogue cry out for TWF, yet the combat expertise argues against that approach and for some kind of tanking.

I decided to do a rogue tank, just because its different and pretty much justifies most of the choices. CE gives AC as does a high dex build, and rogue has evasion with the WF composite body. The Paladin can be expanded in to the first rank of Defender of Siberys so that is more tankishness. Rogue gets intimidate as a class skill so that’s good.

On the rogue side, you could go acrobat but that plays against the weapon finesse and you could go assassin but it seems a waste using sword and shield. So mechanic it is. The traps and grenades can pull agro I suppose, and I figure if your a weird kind of silly tank, being a master of trapping is going to make your more acceptable to most groups.

If you work at it you can get AC into the mid 60s and with raid buffs into the mid 70s, which is respectable tankage. HP will be a tad low for a tank but not terrible and saves are all great to respectable. Intimidate is not top of the line but its not bad and you should be able to tag all but the most indignant mobs.

Of course in combat, it will be a bit disappointing. You have a fair share of sneak attack damage but its going to be dealt slowly and intimidate and sneak attack aren’t exactly a combo since the one cancels out the use of the other. Of course you also have decent use of repeating crossbows which is really just a side benefit of the build, but one you can take advantage of. You wont light the world on fire with DPS but you do contribute to it.

It will take a bit to get your AC together so focus on the trapping for a bit. I think the pleasure of the build is simply surprising folks by playing against type. But if you don’t tank if your cant muster the AC to be missed by the mobs 70% or better of the time. Otherwise your a healing drain and failing to add any DPS to the group.

You could go 32pts, and crank up charisma or int a bit for better skill use. And tomes can nudge AC and HP a bit higher.

I really don't see any feats worth giving up, but would it be worthwhile/possible to squeeze force of personality in there somewhere to take advantage of your cha score to help with will saves? I guess with all the WF immunities it's not that necessary.

I just had one small comment, I think you're short a feat in the list which works since you forgot to add Weapon Finesse in the ones chosen.

Edit: I missed the fact that you added it in the bottom, just not the list at the top.

Is this still a decent build with all the updates?

The thing is, this build is from a time where the level cap was 16, not 20. So, no, as this is not a fully planned build, this is not a viable one. There are other features of the build which are not so en vogue anymore, namely Weapon Finesse. It might be that Armor was a good thing when this build was made, but nowadays, AC has little value in end-game content.

On the other hand, there are Rog builds with deep splashes, i.e. Rog13/Ran6/Mnk1, so I think one could try to build a level 20 version of this, maybe Rog13/Pal6/Mnk1.
