This happened in a PUG last night. I will use no names, not even my own. I relay this little story only as a preamble to my question about Haste and it's application, which is at the bottom of this post.
Doing some Gianthold stuff in a PUG on normal, looking for Elven Relics. We have (at the time this happened) two fighters, a ranger, a cleric, a rogue, and a sorcerer. Pretty good group.
It becomes apparent that the sorcerer is fairly new. Not nooby new, but that this is his first character. All is going well, and the party is working together well. We get into the quest, buff up, resist up, haste, and go. The sorcerer is throwing hypno out, and it's making life pretty easy on us melee types, both of us swinging vorpals and the ranger or rogue is paralyzing with a bow.
So we get to a slight pause in the quest. We refresh buffs and resists outside a door. Party leader says 'Haste and lets go'. Nothing happens. Party leader asks, 'Can we get a haste please?'. Nothing. I type into party chat 'Haste is good'. Nothing. Party leader asks if sorcerer is still there, as we had been having lag issues. Sorc types the following, as near as I can recall it.
'I'm sorry, but as you keep breaking my hypno I am using lots of manna, and have no power to spare for a haste'. He does, of course, have half a blue bar. And, to be honest, we are breaking his hypno, one or two mobs at a time, and then only to kill them as it would seem you have to do damage to things to kill them, and that breaks the hypno apparently. Go figure.
So a discussion amongst the rest of the group ensues, and we tally our haste clickies. I have some armor but it drops my by AC 4 to wear it instead of my usual stuff. The leader has three clicks of 30 second haste, so he hastes us. We continue on the quest.
Three fights later, the leader says, in a normal voice, that he has to go to the shrine to get his haste clickies back.
Apparently that is taken as a shot of some sort by the sorcerer, because he then types in a long rant about how he pays his 15 bucks a month too and has a right to play his character as he wishes. He also says he didn't make his character to be our personal haste monkey. Totally uncalled for, IMO, and I say so. I say I have a sorcerer and Haste is something that really helps the party. He says congratulations. I inform him that he is easy to dislike. He responds with something about saving manna.
During the next fight, I point out that dropping a firewall on a single mob isn't a good use of manna, especially if you are trying to conserve it. No response. But still no haste.
We finish quite easily, and recall back to Gianthold to get our just desserts. As soon as we are all back there, the party leader boots the sorcerer from the party.
The sorcerer responds by hanging around Gianthold and hasting us, over and over and over again.
So, my question is this...........why does Haste work in public spaces when there is a Phiarlan's Pendant of Time available that does basically the same thing? Would it not make more sense to disable that spell in a public place like most spells so this rampant hasting in the pub doesn't continue on and on like that?
