Default Tempest Chanter (a build by request)

This build is from Sigtrent's build request thread

    Build Name: The Whistling Dervish
    Author: Sigfried Trent
    Requester: Accelerondo
    Last Updated: 07/15/10

Key Words [Tempest, Warchanter, Human, TWF]

    Objectives
The request was for a Tempest Warchanter which would be compared to another build.

    Design
At the time, Tempest I was exceptional and Tempest II luke warm at best so the build favored Bard. Now days Tempest II is about as much an improvement as Tempest I and there is no second tier of Warchanter so the focus has shifted. Aside from that the idea is the same, a TWF Kopesh build where bard levels augment DPS.

I chose to start with bard to get UMD going. Human is an easy choice here for feats since both prestige enhancements require them and the humans stat flexibility and extra skill points are all helpful. Since this kind of build is primarily about DPS, going Kopesh seems like the thing to do although it has to wait a bit as I wanted to get TWF and Tempest in early on.

Once TWF is pretty well established and ranged combat is in place I move into fighter to pick up my Warchanter feats and to pick up improved critical. From there we are after Warchanter and the bard buffs and healing. In fact all along I decided to keep self healing in the build. It only gradually picks up steam but between the human healing amp, the life magic, and eventually empower healing, the build should be able to patch itself up decently if not impressively.

With warchanter squared away we finish out with ranger to top off TWF and ranged combat and cap off with Tempest II. You end up with pretty decent DPS, AC, Saves, HP, and buffing. I’m left to wonder though if the build is much better than a ranger with fighter splash. On the up side you have UMD, warchanter and Fascinate, on the downside you don’t have Tempest III and loose out on some favored enemy action. I think the damage bonuses about cancel each other so its weapon speed vs UMD & Fascinate. Also pure ranger develops combat prowess faster but this mix can self heal from day 1.

    Play
This doesn’t play different than most rangers. You want to avoid playing main tank, but you do want to be aggressive and mix it up with the enemy. Overall this build should solo very well as do most ranger based builds.

    Variations
You can move around when you take what levels without too much trouble and you could probably drop fighter all together with a couple of sacrifices. The tomes in this build are entirely optional but I tend to make them standard with 32pt builds. Dropping them only nudges down the final numbers and doesn’t change the character of it at all.

Pretty pretty good Sig. Actually I enjoy your posts and your builds. They are fun to read just thought I would poke at you a bit.

Obviously you went human here, which is an interesting choice, but what about ditching the fighter for two more bard levels?
I believe it is worth it for the songs. Its not that bad if you give up OTWF as the boost to your songs can cover that. There is also the option of going dwarf, and ditching Khopesh in favor of the DW Axe. This would also give you a much needed con boost. GTWF is also nice but its only one attack per round.

There are a few other tweaks I would consider but overall you did a very nice job. No doubt someone will be rolling this one up very soon. Thanks!

BTW I agree with a previous poster in your build thread, your formatting on these posts is tops.

The only thing I would say, is that unless you swapped Ftr for Rog (Evasion), then by dropping one Fighter lvl, you can make Bard13 qualifying for lvl5 spells. Dropping both Ftr lvls, gets Bard14 which gives an Inspire Courage upgrade as well.

I haven't seen one posted since U19 came out. Probably the most recent I can remember is Arlathen's Song & Dance and that's two years old. In some ways, the Enhancement overhaul was very good for this build: in particular, you no longer have the feat pre-reqs for WC & Tempest; and you can mix-n-match PrEs providing greater customization.

I think the "sweet spot" for this built will be either rgr 12 / bard 8 or rgr 12 / bard 7 / <splash> 1. Options for the splash include:
    • ftr: extra feat & extra action boost
    • cleric or FvS: Divine Might, Magical Training
    • wiz: extra feat, Magical Training
    • barb: +10% run speed, +3 Power Atk enh, 4 uses of Rage (up to +7 STR & CON)

Here's a quick sample build: elf with ftr splash, specced for rapiers + longbows.

Builder hasn't been updated with Swashbuckler yet, but may be worth shifting APs into it for the static bonuses which don't depend on Swashbuckling (e.g., extra songs, Dodge, Fast Movement).

Tomorrow many changes coming to warchanter and spellsinger tree as well, so you may want to look into what that would offer for a tempest chanter build. I can only imagine the ice wind line would be useful as the t5 cleave aoe cc would help control incoming damage quite a bit.

In that vein, I would do a 12/8 :ranger/bard. Also if you wanted to a little wider, you could do 10/6/4 Ranger/bard/cleric and utilize ameliorating strikes for burst, no sp heals. I know with a potency item, it is healing the melees around me for 200+.

The core concept of this build doesn't really change with the SS/WC changes, IMHO. The WC freezing DCs are based on CHA + # of bard lvls; so on a heavily-MCed low-CHA build like this, I would expect them to be virtually useless.
