    The essential difference between you and I is...you can speak better Japanese than I & you have a spouse who can read it.

    I walk into a Japanese grocery store or convenience store and unless I recognize the food itself (or its picture), I'm lost. I can't read the packaging. Sometimes I ask the employees but usually I hate to bother them with my stilted, baby Japanese.

    I'll agree on the Haagen Dazs ice cream. Much better off base than on. Tiramisu, Bitter Caramel, Chardonnay & Peach, and Creme Brulee are just a few of the flavors you can purchase individual serving containers of from the convenience stores.

    Fresh baumkuchen and iced coffee from the local japanese store is good too, and I love the spicy shrimp flavored chips.

    Hey, I learned the hard way...

    I remember buying what looked like a yummy jelly donut, and it seriously looks good... biting into it and...

    its filled with a sweet bean paste, called anko...

    YUCK!

    Well, that was a mistake I made more than once, unfortunately always when I was really hungry... and made it so many times I actually like them now!

    UFOs, Pocky, yam-yam, seaweed chips, and Iced coffee... gosh I've never been to Japan, but those are a few of my favorite snacks. I get them from the japanese grocer that taught me to say "oHIo!" and "doh ito mush' te" when he says "konbanwa" and "arigato" (yes, I know my pronunciation is atrocious)

    I like short...

    A wonderful ex of mine was a 5'1" waif.. maybe 90lbs... and it was hilarious... I'd pick her up, sit her on my shoulder and walk her around at parties as if she was my parrot... but then one day, Cap'n Crunch came to visit and he said, "thar, ya be matey... lets go git ourselves some treasure... harr harrr harrr".. and I left her for the joys of Alberta... on the bright side..

    but I digress

    Basic phrases:

    Hai == yes
    Iie == no
    Ohayo gozaimasu == good morning
    Konnichiwa == good afternoon
    Konbanwa == good evening
    Oyasuminasai == good night
    Sayoonara == goodbye
    Ja mata == see you later
    Sumimasen == excuse me
    Doomo arigatoo / arigatoo gozaimasu == thank you
    Doo itashima****e == you're welcome
    Chotto matte kudasai == just a moment please
    Sore ikura desu ka == How much is that?
    And that's your japanese lesson for the day.

    EDIT: urggg the filter just removed part of the japanese phrase because it spells something meaning poo in english. Stupid filters...

    i thought i'd point out that "-oo-" is a long "o" in Japanese, as in ocean, and not as in moon. I made that mistake once.

    Yes and the u at the end of most words is almost silent.

    Sore ikura desu ka
    So "desu ka" is pronounced closer to "des-ka".

    I also must confess a weakness for homemade nachos. PepperJack & chedder cheeses - shredded - sprinkled on Tostitos Hint 'o Lime chips - heated.

    I think all the various trail mixes can be covered under one good old stand-by phrase that anyone who spends a lot of time hiking, camping, backpacking, trekking, summiting, rock climbing, etc., will know..... GORP. Or Good Ole Raisins and Peanuts. Doesn't matter what else you mix in or what you call it. Refer to it as GORP and everyone knows you're talking about your trail mix.

    As for my favorite snacks I'm going to have to go with, well GORP. Of course there's always my habenero salsa with corn chips when I'm feeling spicy. Or perhaps a granola bar and some fresh fruit. Washed down by a big glass of water or tea. If I'm in the mood for something a little more heavy, I have a whole freezer full of elk and deer jerky. Hunted them myself even. Or if I have a sweet tooth that night, then I'd have to go with a home-made rootbeer float.

    I guess I'm ecclectic when it comes to my snacks because after all, humans didn't get to the top of the food chain to be vegetarians.

    Wasabi-Soy almonds and a 32-ounce Rum-n-coke with about 8 onces of rum it in.

    Go away you.

    We necro'd this to see whether this or the other nercro'd 2007 thread would get more people posting on it.

    As it turns out, other thread (and evidence this was planned) has vanished.
    I'm not amused.
