Default Calamity Jane (A build by request)

    From Sigtrent's Build Request Thread

    Build Name:Calamity Jane
    Author:Sigfried Trent
    Requester:Penumbra
    Last Updated:06/16/10

Key Words [Rogue, Mechanic, Repeating Crossbow, Unarmed, Sneak Attack, Halfling]

    Objectives
The original request was for a female halfling trapping rogue using repeaters and piercing weapons. The original build was a paladin/fighter/rogue with many ranged feats and little in the way of melee focus. The requester reported they very much liked the build up untill the higher levels where it's melee ability was too weak to keep the build competitive. For the re-make I decided to work on increasing the melee ability without drastically changing the other components of the build.

    Design
I didn't feel paladin was essential to the original. The save bonuses were nice but charisma was under utilized. Because I wanted to include more feats, monk/fighter seemed the best splash options for picking them up. Monk also gives you a very fast attack style to leverage sneak attack damage with. This takes you away from piercing weapons but you can of course still use rapier/short sword, albeit at a much slower attack rate. Also stunning handwraps combo very well with sneak attack damage.

I used the new Mechanic prestige bonus to include repeater use. This has the up side of freeing up a feat, but the downside of taking much longer to get the proficiency. You could take it at level 3 and then swap feats before taking mechanic to take weapon finesse if you are eager to get going with repeaters. All this feat conservation lets you run full TWF and strong repeater use in the same build. DPS should be pretty solid due to high attack speed via unarmed+haste boost+air stance+TWF coupled with good sneak attack damage, power attack, and weapon effects. The repeater side gets a nice boost from the int bonus.

Defenses on the build are quite good: hit points are solid for a rogue, AC is substantial, and saves are very good. Rogue skills are top notch so it should be able to handle any trap thrown its way. I like that it pairs high end trapping with decent melee and ranged dps yet maintains good survivability. I feel it is a large improvement on the original build.

    Play
Repeaters and rogue melee is very different so play technique varies depending on your approach. Repeaters are great for sniping down foes before they ever get close to you and for kiting. On the other hand that's a great way to pull agro which makes sneak attack useless. Melee is all about applying lots of sneak attack damage quickly to a target so you want to avoid agro and jump in on a monster once it is already engaged. My main advice would be to always have a plan of attack in a given situation. Pairing with an intim can be a great help as they can instantly grab agro on anything you pull in with a repeater at which point you can switch to melee and finish it off.

    Variations
28pt builds work here although you do make some sacrifices. Wisdom is likely the first to go. The tomes are mostly gravy although this build is using its strength tome to qualify for power attack. You could easily afford to use a level up for strength instead of dex to qualify.

    Default thank you

looks very solid. should have mentioned i had 32 point builds unlocked. an over sight on my part. i will adjust the stats for it, unless you have a suggestion. looks similar to my newest character. 10 rogue, 2 fighter, 2 paladin 2WF.(@ level 3 now) basically a 32 point rework of my original not-just-a-rogue. hhmm will keep in mind about the light repeaters, but would like to have precision. i use it on my original rogue and love it. +4 to hit with less chance of agro makes her cursespewers shine. overall very satisfied with the way it pans out. can't wait roll her up , and thanks again for your time.

side note: would have to look it up, but is there any reason to not drop to 7 rogue and grab 3 paladin?

Not that I can think of. It would change the enhancement picks a bit, I think you loos open lock 3 and search 3, but you would want the enhancmeent points for bulwark and resistance of good along wtih extra lay on hands anyhow.

I originaly started with a 2/2/10 build for improved evaison but I just couldn't get in the feats I wanted that way, so I went to 4/2/8 so I think I passed by palladin 3 becasue I didn't especialy need it for what I was aiming at, but I think it has nice beneifts and is worth the change if you like them.

8 Rogue would ensure you could snag Improved Evasion with next level update to 16.

I lived with Calamity Jane (or her spiritual descendant anyway) and I can tell you a few things... One, she ain't no Paladin, two, she is definitely partially a bloody Barbarian, and she ain't no midget neither.

Default Love Affair, If Not Over, Cooling

This build is now a labor of love. It has it's moments to shine, but has severe melee limitations. I think it's a viable build, but I'm starting to think I'll use a reincarnation to have another go at it, perhaps without the Paladin levels.

    Summary: maybe.

    Default Update 11 viability?

Would you mind updating this build? With update 11, this build seems pretty good and with your expertise could become potent! Thanks in advance.
