    Default Dwarven Defender (A build by request)

    Objectives
    The requester wanted a dwarven defender, built as close to the PnP prestige class as possible. Mind you this was before the defender prestige enhancements were in the game. At the time I rightly predicted in the original that they would be implemented that way. He wanted 2 classes max, dodge, toughness, and endurance (which isn’t in ddo).

    Design
    The original was Fighter/Paladin but for the revamp I wanted to go with a pure fighter to really capitalize on the Stalwart Defender prestige enhancement. I decided defense was the priority but good damage was a close second. Due to the glancing blows you can get on dwarven axes, the two handed fighting line seemed like a good bet.

    Due to the lowish charisma I loaded up on Intimidate bonuses wherever I could get them. The same goes for anything bumping AC and a few other defensive goodies like shield mastery. On the offense side it’s hard to beat the specializations and improved critical. Enhancements were tight as usual and not every offense opportunity was utilized.

    I tried to peg the dex vs armor mastery to get optimal performance from full plate and tower shield (mithral if you crank on exceptional dex bonuses). You should get the feats you need at about the right time for your dex item bumps. AC should be top notch for a shield tank, especially if you have raid style buffing available. Even if you don’t its really solid.

    Hit points are quite good, but saves are not all that great, even with dwarven bonuses. Defensive spell buffs are definitely recommended. The build has no self healing to speak of but outside of raids you really shouldn’t take much damage if play it safe. Solo play is pretty good so long as you get the jump on casters and avoid casting named bosses.

    Play
    This is a team player build in that it is not too self sufficient (a huge collection of clickies not withstanding). You can certainly race around and do good DPS when the fights are easy, but intim tanks do best when the group has a battle plan and you get support from arcane and divine casters.

    Variations
    28pts is doable, but less optimal. You would probably tap down a little on dex and con and up the int a little. You may also have to completely dump charisma. With less dex you can trade in some armor mastery enhancements for damage enhancements.
