    Question Class: Elf

In AD&D one of the favorite builds was the Elven Fighter-Magicuser. In Basic D&D you could choose a "class" called "Elf" that mimicked the AD&D Fighter-Wizard build.

I have been surprised that in my almost 2 years of playing the game that I have not found another "True" Fighter-Wizard build on the game.

Any thoughts as to why not?

I played a lot of "basic" D&D back in the day and almost always played the "elf". The 3.0 rules just don't lend themselves especialy well to it, but such characters like that are certainly viable.

I guess the main thing is that in D&D these days you only need a level or two of a combat class to give you most of the abbilities you need to succede in combat, while casters are very level dependent. So most caster/fighters are going to be built with an emphasis on the casting classes.

I have a Wizard 13 Fighter 1 and his to-hit values are almost as good as most pure combat characters.

The defensive side of being a fighter is really where taking more fighter levels comes in. I think the enhancement system here actualy supports mixed characters like that much better than the regular d20 system which heavily favors "splashing" classes to pick up their basic abbilities.

The difficulty building a true fighting mage is one of the big things people point out as a failing of 3.x

And something 4.0 is gonna fix, in theory.

You can't really do it without prestige classes very well.

In DDO, I'd recommend a paladin 2/Sorc 12. Nice CHA synergy, use healing wands, auras.

Yep, if they were to give us the Eldritch Knight prestige class then the battlemage would be much more viable.

There are a couple battle mage builds in there who were tearing it up. Chain of flames from beginning to end without needing anyone else to heal them either. Let's see your piddly basic D&D elf try that.

Pft, elves are fairies anyways. Make way for the new master race. Make us slaves will you? You got yours coming fairy.

    Death to all fleshlings!!!

You do know that you don't have to be a Warforged Battlemage to not need anybody else to heal you up.

Yes, I'm completely aware of umd. But to make that work well you need to either go sorc/fighter for higher cha, or take a lvl of either bard or rogue to get it as a class skill. And even then it's only at higher levels that you can heal reliably for the same ammount as a warforged battle mage (well, unless you took that lvl of bard for class use of wands).

That however is not the main point. The main point is elves are oppresors, fleshlings, and nancy boy fairies.

Edit: Oh, and of course there are potions.

How much more viable are we talking here? A properly built WF fighter/mage is extremely viable.

    Default Fighter-Magicuser

I have to say that my build is alot of fun. Sure not uber by any means, but interesting.

When I built my F/W I knew that a shield would hamper my spellcasting, so I decided to carry two weapons. Since I had no shield, I also went with tumbling.

I now come up with these "Street-Fighter" style combos of Web, Magic-Missle, and then a tumble & a flury of blows.

Of course I have Haste and Fire-Wall, and sometimes Stoneskin to help the party as well.

Not being uber, I consider myself to be a support-class, much like a bard, ranger or rogue.

So if you have not made a Fighter-Wizard build yet...try it!

Let me guess - by your self indulgent attitude I would say you are a follower of the Fat One, or at least raised in that tradition. Followers of the Tin Spark are generally more blasphemous in their attitudes, but tend to show a great deal more social restraint. Followers of the fat one are definitely unrestrained.

I give allegiance to the winds and tides, and count as friends the trees and beasts of the land.

Automatons and constructs and Warforged beings, on the other hand, run counter to the very fabric of all that is right and natural with the world, and should be purged as such.

To the OP, you are not the lone Fighter/mage build in the game. I made one over a year ago and is a blast to play. I went elf for it because the enchantments are all there for this, just most people haven't taken to much notice to them. Beside the fact that when I picture ftr/mage, I picture an elf being this multi-class. I hope I can get all my stats, gear and stuff to be able to post it all so others can see its potential.
