Total noob here, I am a level 4 ranger but have yet to cast a spell. I know wizards have an inscribe spell feat but I do not. I can't figure out how to get spells onto my spell tab in my character sheet. Please help?

couple things it could be:

1. you have to have 4 ranger levels to cast ranger spells - so if you took a level of any other class (known as multi-classing or MC) you have to wait until you have 4 actual ranger levels

2. A Ranger needs a Wisdom score of at least (10 + spell level) to prepare and cast spells.

If you dumped wisdom (8) a + 3 wisdom item from the action hall (or loot) will allow you to casts 1st level spells

Also rangers dont need to inscribe spells - they are considered divine and get their power directly from nature or deities.

Plus you have to be in a tavern to change spells. I dont know why.

Thanks for quick response. I am not multi class, I will look into my stats. I have one empty level 1 spot when I go to my spells tab but can't populate.

1st, go to a taven

Then open your character sheet

Then click on spell tab

After that refer to post 2.

Off topic: I've never seen a lot of those icons before, are they real?

Are you talking about the spell icons? I see 3 that jump out as less frequently used. I think they are the level 5 mind fog. Level 6 ottos freezing sphere, and level 8 symbol of death. I'd log into my wizard to double check them but my internet went out tonight, and my service provider set an appointment for the tech to come out on the 10th. A freaking week. In a free market that would never happen but in these regulated and protected industries timely customer service isn't required cause your customer has limited choice of who to do business with.

I'm guessing the bit your missing is this :

If you click on the area circled you then get:

and you should be good to go.

As noted earlier you';; need at least a 11 in Wisdom to prep lvl1 spells and in a Tavern (or after Shrining or on Airship)

Spells require an Ability = 10+Spell Level, but you can get that easily. Guild buffs add +2, and gear items can help (check the Auction House - put that item and your regular "combat" item on hotbar to swap when you need to buff), but the easiest might be to go to the Market (big red tent) and buy some Owl's Wisdom potions. ~30 plat/, +4 for 5 minutes, done.

As you level up, you'll have to track down someone who sells higher level Ranger spell ingredients - there's a seller in that same tent, but the best would be to go to a shop in House J or P. Buy 1000, no reason to be cheap and risk running out. (You can drop them on a hotbar off to the side so you can see what you have left at a glance.)

If you lack a Wis item, potions of Owl's Wisdom are sold in the middle of the Marketplace.

Plus you have to be in a tavern to change spells. I dont know why.

You can also swap spells after resting at a shrine, as long as you don't cast any spells before you try to swap.

As to why a tavern, it's probably an attempt to be close to pen and paper D&D, where you would need to rest (an inn is a good place to rest) before you could select new spells.

Ok, I wasn't a level 10 on intelligence, now I am. I go to a tavern, and I can drag the spells into my level 1 spot but it says my "ability" score is too low. What ability???

As a Ranger, you are casting divine spells which need Wisdom, not Intelligence, as you have figured.

Both the Arcane Archer and Deepwoods stalker have enhancements that let you permanently boost Wisdom, starting from level 3, and another at level 4, so a total of 2 points of Wisdom in each tree. So that's one option.

What's your base Wis now? Spending the ability points you get on level up on an already low score is a pretty poor use of points overall though. Ideally you'd be boosting something higher that would have cost more points to buy on initial character creation.

https://ddowiki.com/page/Build_point

To go from 17 to 18 costs 3 points at creation. Say you start with Wis 10 and Dex 18, then put the level up point in Wis, you now have Wis 11 and Dex 18. If you started with Dex 17, you could start with 13 Wis, then put the level up point in Dex, and you are now 2 points in total ahead - Wis 13, Dex 18.

You should have got a free lesser heart of wood that you can use to re-spec your character. I know a lot of vets will just say delete and restart, but I remember how hard getting those first 4 levels was first time through, so if you feel you have really screwed up, using the heart is an option. I'd do that before I forked out for a tome just to save a basic build mistake. Maybe look through a few ranger build ideas on the forum first though, so you get some idea what to start with this time, and how to level up.

Thanks, this is very helpful. My wisdom is a 10 currently, I am close to level 5, I will level for now and then if I'm not happy i will try my heart of wood. Didn't realize how important my initial build was. As long as I can eventually cast some spells i will be happy. At some point I will just start a new character, but for now I obviously have a lot to learn.

Unless you're a Warforged you have at least 8 base wisdom. Owl's Wisdom will increase that to 12 until you can find a +3 Wisdom item. A wand with 50 charges can be bought for about 500 plat in the middle of the Marketplace, from Olvod Alorum.
Search the Auction House for "Prudent", "Wise" and "Wisdom" items. Also under the bridge at the south of the Marketplace, the silver circles on your map are brokers. Occasionally they'll have things such as a "Prudent 3 Cloak of Sonic Absorption 13", minimum level 5. If you have the Sharn Syndicate adventure pack, the quest Repossession has a minimum level 2 ring with +3 Wisdom.
I wouldn't personally use a Heart of Wood to increase Wisdom on a Ranger to cast spells. A +3 from base by level 4, +4 by level 8, +5 by 11 and +6 by 14 are all fairly easy to obtain especially if you take a +Wis enhancement from Deepwood Stalker.

if you put on an item that increases wisdom, or drink an owl's wisdom potion, you will have enough to cast ranger spells without changing anything else

No problem. The initial build is actually a huge part of the game, as is what you do during the leveling process. It's actually a big part of the appeal for many people - that the character build process is so in-depth and flexible. Of course, that flexibility comes with pitfalls and other traps, and it sounds like you've fallen into one. Not an issue - there are ways to recover and I think in the long term it won't be a problem.

Anyway, are you making use of those enhancement trees? You could theoretically be getting an extra 2 WIS already from that - so you'd be able to cast up to level 2 spells.

And as a few other people have pointed out - getting a WIS boost item shouldn't be too difficult. Keep an eye out in quest end rewards and check the auction house, etc. By the time you hit level 20 none of this will be an issue, I promise!

I just recently realized this. Being a total noob, I applied most/all of my action points to stuff I didn't understand. Should I reset one of my trees? I used several on archer enhancements but so far I rarely use a bow.

I'm on Cannith. Hit up anyone in my signature (Baldric is my main ranger, currently in a sorcerer life) if you need any advice or items. I'll see what I can do.

NO!

That's only 1 solution, but an unnecessarily expensive one.

Any modifier to your stat will do the job. Hit the Auction House and buy a +wisdom item (search for "prudent" items). Or, go to the potion vendor under the big red tent in the center of The Marketplace, and buy some Owl's Wisdom potions - 5 minutes of +4. (Note that these 2 sources don't stack.)

Also, get a Guild Buff - adds +2 to Wisdom (stacks w/ other bonuses) for several hours of questing (timer stops when outside quests).

GL!

THANK YOU. I found a +2 wisdom helm on a quest, did the job! I can now cast level 1 spells.
