Hi,

one of our group recently had a long stay in the hospital and thus was left behind experience wise. When he got back we helped him catch up (mostly by doing wilderness area exp which allows for a greater level gap), but now we're level 18 with maximum heroic exp achieved while he is barely level 17.

Now the question is, if we run a few more quests and get him to level 18, then we level up to level 20, is there an exp penalty for us being epic? Or do the penalty rules stay the same, as in no penalty* because we're all within 2 levels of each other?

Thanks in advance for your help :D

*of course we'll still have the penalty if we do low level quests, but we plan on doing mostly level 18 on hard/elite. So at most we should have 10%, right?

I've been running lvl 18-19 quests on a level 20 char with no exp penalties, so you should be good as long as you maintain the two level gap.

There's 2 different XP penalties to consider.

The "power-leveling" penalty would only kick in if the highest character is 4 or more levels higher than the lowest. Level 20s & 17s can run together just fine with no power-leveling penalty. This is unrelated to the level of the quest.

The "over-level" penalty is related to the highest-level character in the party versus the level of the quest. It's unrelated to the spread of levels in your party. This is separate from the power-leveling penalty, and if both apply, they stack.

A group with a level 20 character running level 18 quests, on hard, will have no penalty. If you do 18s on Normal, or 17s on Hard, or 16s on Elite (or anything lower, of course) you'll start having over-level penalties.

One more thing to note is that if you run level 17s on Elite, you technically don't get an over-level penalty, but you do potentially lose out on a bonus if you're level 20 ("Bravery"), which requires you to be only 2 levels over.

All this is in Heroic...rules change slightly in Epic quests.
