DDO Store items. Cosmetic Orbs. Just balls of elemental energy, like:

A Wizard holding a ball of arcane energy.
A Sun Elf Cleric holding a ball of pure light.
A Burn Sorc holding a ball of fire.

We'd eat them up like candy. Turbine would make more money. Win-win for all involved.

DOOO EEET Turbine!

On the subject of orbs... now these took a lot of time because I was trying hard to mimic the special weapon visual effects in game on orbs which don't have special effects (but should) and of course there's the issues of background and the issues of some weapon visuals not really showing up very well, etc. etc.

From upper left to lower right we have: Sonic, Electric, Flames, Frost, Acid (not much to see really), Holy, Force, Chaos (original), Enhanced Chaos (cosmetic weapon effect), Evil.

And some further ideas for future named orbs... the D20 (because why the heck not?), the Dragon's Eye (not just some piddly psuedo-dragon trinket), Eladrin's Blessing, and the King's Ransom.

Yes, these are awesome! They should match the weapon elemental effects, and I was thinking a little more elemental and a little less orb. Not such a hard edge in the middle. Trying not to feel slighted there's no light orb, but those are really cool man, ty.

And the 20 sider is so D&D geek it's the most must have in the freaking game.

i say you use some of the pets as orbs - ie the beholder comes to mind as does the bat

So you wanted something more like... a continuous spell effect in the hand? I guess I could see it for some like fire but acid, sonic? *shrugs* I could be wrong but I think weapon visual effects on orbs would be easier to implement. Idk. I'm a lady, just FYI. I tried to make a miniature sun for a light orb, using screenshots of some incandescent weapons, its harder then you think, maybe I'll give it another try but I'll have to get some better screenshots after tinkering with my brightness/gamma settings. Sure I could have photo-shopped a picture of the sun in a character's hand but the point I was trying to go for was to use in-game art assets to show the devs that with some imagination more things are possible with what they already have.

Yeah the D20 breaks the fourth wall a little but its from the examination window of the Master's Gift, I'm not sure but I could see that one being a DDO Store exclusive or something they hand out (as an orb cosmetic) for events and such. The dragon's eye came off GH dragon armor, I had to tweak it to make it spherical and the Eladrin is obvious... although that would definitely be a light/alignment orb. The ruby was a Ruby Eye augment in the examination window.

Could you use the floaty stuff from from holy or force (in green) for acid?

Nice work.

Devs: when you implement these, the eyes should have blinking and looking movements.

nice.

How about something shamanic-inspired, like neolithic figurines? Heck, we have a book as one so the flexibility is there for non-sphericals.

I was thinking about a crystal shard like the ones from shroud, but I'll look for something more tribal. I've never tried, do orbs break druidic oath? If not that opens the door for some more naturalistic type orbs representing the power of nature.

Depends only on the material of the orb. Wood, crystal, leather, scales, hide etc all good.

Hmm, a furry orb. Tribbles anyone?

I think of DDO's implementation of orbs as similar to the old concept of a spell focus or divine caster's holy symbol, or in the case of Libram an Arcane's spellbook. On that note for a druid, a good sized conch shell, geode, piece of weathered driftwood, an incredibly large seed or acorn, or possibly an enormous, enchanted bloom might be good ideas.

From upper left to lower right: A cog/mechanical type orb, the image is a combination of elements from a cosmetic docent and the battlecoin trinket. An orb of flowers, from a screenshot in Eveningstar. Purple dragonshards from the back of a kobold and a Portable Hole from the examination window. If the Portable Hole ever makes it in, it absolutely must have some unique guard type effect like enemies getting sucked in or something, because that would be fun.

I'm thinking of making one from an image of Shar's symbol however I need a better screenshot but then I think I'm done with orbs for the time being.

Just a note for those that aren't aware, I have a thread on the general forums titled Cosmetics and whatever happened to the Official Discussions Feedback? in General Discussions that has the entire collection of my cosmetic images so far. I'm doing that to keep all the images together.

These are the last ideas I have for orbs currently. Again from upper left to lower right: A crystalline orb made from the same substance as the crystalline scepter. An iridescent, rainbow orb created from a Wondrous Heavy Mace. An orb from the symbol of Shar and a sunny golden orb the best I could do from scratch because the visual effect for solar/coruscating is rather underwhelming in a static image.

I'm done with orbs for the time being so any future cosmetics or visual ideas will only be posted in my cosmetics thread going forward. Hope you like the sun orb Taanus.

Here is a thought I had...

Add a soul gem slot to all orbs. Let us slot a soul gem as a cosmetic to the orb maybe have it show the head of the trapped creature.

Had to throw it in because of my collection of soul gems and not much to use them on.

I would think that it would be more important to people to be able to actually use a cosmetic orb throughout the whole game than to get new ones.

At this point, the lowest ML orb is level 7. And it's the very rare Golden Orb of Death. So, actually, it would probably be more accurate to say ML 8 (not sure about the drop rate of that ML 8 orb from Slave Lords but it has to be at least higher than the orb of death).

My point being: isn't the fact that cosmetic orbs can't even be visible on characters for a significant chunk of the game's levels more important than whether or not there's a 'sparkle puff-ball cosmetic orb' or a 'caramel-swirl glow circle cosmetic orb' or a whatever else kind of cosmetic orb available? Depending on your character level, those are the only type of cosmetic that you might not even be able to SEE on your character because there aren't any orbs at all in the game for a large range of levels!

those levels last about 4 hours of a 30 hour experience in heroics

for whom?

I have several characters who've been under level seven for years because I rarely play them. But when I do play them, they definitely can't use orb cosmetics.

Yes but you also have to do a horb, for ham.

The above should not be taken to mean I don't think you should also do 'serious' orbs.

+1!

Other ideas:
- Dragon egg (with dragonmark on the shell ;)
- Dwarven cubes (google it)
- shield hilt (so if you block it will nicely compose with orb shield effect)

Still kinda surprised none of the devs have decided to introduce a side a beef as a true "meat shield". Could also be applied to orbs in the form of a meatball or a ham leg
