Which is "now" - thx for heads up!

From recent past experience (and with no promises implied), ~about~ how long would you guesstimate this downtime to take?

Reading yesterday's thread shows that the worlds rebooted were back up within half an hour or less, hoping that Khyber will be the same.....

Honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not here, but if you are, there's no reason for it. There was a post on the launcher, and global announcements in-game from noon onward. If you missed all that, it's certainly not the fault of the devs.

On topic: here's hoping this at least makes the lag more bearable. Thunderholme was completely unplayable on Khyber last night, and not even with a full group. FoT has been pretty bad lately as well, with massive lag spikes following each dragon/giant death.

The thread from yesterday with Ghallanda's restart is closed so I'm posting here as it seems like the next best choice.

I logged into Ghallanda around 8:30, maybe 9:00 pm EST last night. Attempted an EH MoD, EN DoJ, and multiple EE missions. All experienced the same lag lockups and lag spikes as before the restart. The MoD raid actually started out okay but got progressively worse as the raid proceeded to the point where it was a deathfest slideshow at the end. I think when the Abbot finally dropped, 9 of the 12 players were dead and nearly everyone had multiple deaths. DoJ was a lost causefrom the get go.

The lag got worse the closer it got to prime time and most likely as more players logged back in after realizing the world was open again. By the end of the night, I was experiencing random, extended lag spikes while short-manning and soloing missions. It may not have been as miserable as this past weekend but I would assume that correlates with a higher player population on the weekends.

Played a few hours with a static group of 3 of us through low level heroics last night at what would be 1am - 3am EST on Ghallanda.
Result: Your server code still sucks on the "new" hardware.

In all cases all 3 of us were frozen at the same time.
Lag was of the variety: noone gets to move for a few seconds and then everything bounces to catchup; as well as a few slide show groups of seconds.
Network connections were green and lossless whenever I checked. Ping was 90-100ms (from three different parts of CA).
There was nothing special happening in game when these lag spikes hit that I could tell. I did not notice as much "spawned group of monsters specific to our quest lags you out" as I had previously seen last week. Though that could have been the quests.

I can't imagine how bad things are for raids and primetime EST if 3am EST is sloppy lag. Though maybe it's just us and Aussies/Kiwis/Sheep/PacificFish playing now.

"We will be restarting for maintenance."

This is a very confusing way to phrase things. It sounds like it could be down for anywhere from 5 minutes to 12 hours. Maybe you don't know how long it will be down, but it would be nice if that were said rather than such a strange statement that sounds like you know what the goal of the downtime is, but still leaves it open to be a completely unknown period of time.

I understand and bluster aside I don't expect this to be fixed overnight but at this point if I'm gonna get 6-12 people together to test something new I need a days notice or so.

Continued testing on this current "fix" is a fail.

Sorry but i disagree with that.

The lag on sarlona has been almost unbearable before the data center changes, and even worse now.

Most of us pay for vip and no offense meant to devs or the people that help to fix it but if you paid for a cell phone that has full signal and only picks up half your calls and drops the other half of them wouldn't you be mad? Heres to hope that lag will decrease.

I had very little lag on Thelanis last night at midnight EST, played till about 3AM EST. The lag is definitely worse at prime time. If I log on earlier I see the rubber banding and very delayed responses as well.

Please don't close the feedback thread so quickly next time, some of us might like to say something the next morning Maybe give it 24 hours?

Also on Sarlona, noticed a couple of little spikes here and there, other than that, pretty good for me. I understand others are having issues, but it's really not been that bad for me....

It's certainly not '90%' of the game, as some claim - maybe 90% of the raids, but I'm not doing those.

I play Cannith and I will attest that I've had some really bad lag spikes. Some were in parties, other by myself. It hasn't been bad enough to be unplayable - but if they happened at an inopportune time it would certainly result in deaths and more frustration than trying to chase the enemy around as he runs to places you were a few seconds prior.

Um...swing and a miss? I was saying there was no reason for his sarcasm (if his "heads up" comment was in fact sarcastic). I'm VIP as well and I'm not happy about the lag, but complaining about it or berating the devs isn't going to accomplish anything except stressing them out. Do you work well under stress? I know I don't.

So far, on Sarlona:

I can't say a whole lot about lag yet, because I have hardly seen any (a few moments of hitching shortly after the servers came back up which I haven't seen again).

I just ran EH Chronoscope by myself to see how mob AI is handling, since it was one of the first places where I really noticed problems in the past week thanks to all of the archers up on roofs. Well, it looks like it's fixed--they didn't wander off ledges by themselves, and neither did they fall off when doing their ranged AI "get out of melee" behavior; they would run, reach an edge, and stop their movement there instead of falling over as they had been recently. Razor Arm had also been falling off edges in my last run a few days ago, and is back to normal.

Furthermore, I noticed that the patrolling Abishai seem to be a bit better about moving to ground level after their first few spells, as they had prior to U30 (or maybe it was even U29 where I started noticing they had problems). Except in the southern portions of the map, where they were content to stay in the air until their health was knocked down.

LN shroud on khyber, 10 people, and as someone in chat said 'something's missing' it was responded to with a whole lot of 'don't say it!' - 'don't jinx it!' . no lag aside from some slight stutter when the barriers to each alter went down and the chests populated. There. I just probably jinxed it by using the L-word.

I still see the usual problem with lag, which I personally call the "Thunderholme situation": lag ensues whenever party splits or party members are far apart from each other....

Rog
03-22-2016, 04:51 PM
the word I am getting the raids are running fine.
Thunderholme is still a nightmare.
the first run I was only getting lag spike when I invited new people to the raid. and when 30+ mobs spawned
the second run lag wiped 5 minutes in the area.
the third try experienced lag spike with every spawn.
over opinion much better than before still needs a lot of work.

ya just was up in thunderholme lag test with these guys and verify the same. Total mess in there. Game still needs big time fixxin.

Nyata
03-22-2016, 04:56 PM
hmm but thunderholme is kind of an 'old issue', whatever they did now was to fix the new issues caused by the data center move. and personally i have to say - so far things look good for me. they weren't nightmarish before for me, but right now they are as good or tentatively saying even better than before the move.

only severe freeze I had actually was when I summoned my artificer dog. still on khyber, btw. And now have to log for the night. I think my boss will not accept 'I had to do all night lag tests' as an excuse for not showing up at work ;D

HoX LH

12 man

Upon entering rubbing banding on jumping up in down.

As soon as 3 days and ZZ Top was pulled. Crippling lag. To be honest, it was worse than before the reboot.

20 min in. Lag wiped the whole party. Took several min for dogs charm to take.

Before this ran a Epic Tide(low level) on 3 man with no lag at all.

Does not seem what you did helped for the content that I like to run.

I am not even mad I burned a raid timer. Just sad at the chorus of NO'S I got when asked to repeat.

This makes me sad =/

P.S.: Voice chat did not work in a different party after I dropped failed Raid until I relogged.

I hope when you believe this is fixed you create an event that will lure droves of people back to stress test it. I suggest one account-bound DDO store quality mana or health potions in each chest, with a 2% chance of a res cake for a long weekend. Also serves as a reward for people putting up with it. Consider extending it if you've failed.

Went on and did a bunch of raiding on Cannith server. Here's my report. In all instances of lag, all party members commented that they were experiencing it.

EH 8 man Deathwyrm - a few stutters, only one big spike after real phylactery was killed, much better than before.
EN 11 man DoJ - Lots of lag, almost failed due to Archons dying because we couldn't get to them from everyone being frozen by lag.
EE 10 man FOTP - Not as much lag as DoJ, but enough to create a problem. Eventually failed because tank said lag was making his heals not land. He couldn't stay alive to tank.
EH 6 man FOTP - no lag whatsoever.
LH 12 man Tempest Spine - a few stutters of lag.

Overall: Better than it was before, and thank you, but still needs work.

My observation: Both before and after the server maintenance, I've noticed a general trend that the larger the party, the more likely it is that lag will strike and the more severe the lag is likely to be. While there are exceptions (Like the LH Tempest Spine), that's been my experience since the data center move.

Things were running decently smooth on Wayfinder/Thelanis and a few other servers before the data center move .
Now we can not run groups of more than 4 live people or any raids due to the crippling ongoing lag issues.
Now it seems that even chat and other basic things are not working properly.
Quests are broken and have recurring looping issues that make it impossible to finish them.
Haunted Halls of Evening Star and Gianthold TOR come to mind at the moment, although I know there are others, I can not think of them now.

Are these issues going to be fixed or this the DEATH RATTLE of DDO?

I love this game , but now I can not even enjoy running things with all the "snowball" problems it is having.
I hope you are working on solving problems to bring DDO back to glory .

Sincerely,

Full Metal Alchemist

Cannith, 22 Mar, ~1930 - 2000 CDT: Tried 2 raids tonight LN HoX and LN DoJ.

In HoX the lag was improved but still not as good as before the data center move. We lost our charm on one hound because we froze after killing the mob, then got sling-shotted halfway down the hall, then stone dropped way behind us and nobody saw it. Had quite a few lag deaths (running in place, then suddenly dead from god-knows-which mob) but managed to finish. Not fun.

DoJ, we failed in part 2 (again) because we couldn't get to mobs fast enough because of lag-freeze, and then we were constantly swinging at where the mob was 2 seconds ago and hitting nothing but air. Not fun.

Please keep making improvements. I'm the only one left from my guild online most of the time, everyone else has wandering off in disgust.

Ran in a full group this evening for about 2 hours, all of the gianthold walkups.

Gotta say, people in the group were cautiously optimistic; they didn't complain about lag at all really, and even commented that it seemed much better tonight.

I myself don't get that much lag, as I'm mostly doing epics, not raids... But even my occasional stutters are gone, not a single one tonight.

Keep it up, do what you gotta do, Turbine.

And thanks!

Put up LMF on Khyber as indicated earlier today:

LN Shroud 1 of 5

Results:

Run 1 ~ 10 players (noted above by others) went very smoothy

Run 2 ~ 10 players went very smoothy

Run 3 ~ 11 players plus 1 DCed went well, but I suffered from part 1 network issues was not able to participate in a good part of thus, recovered after part 1 and helped group hurl the crystal and so forth

Run 4 & 5 Lag death failures due to having a full 12 man groups ~ both failed, had serious network in one, had portal keeper targeted in other, pressed hurl, lagged out, timer kept ticking and portal keeper tossed us from part 1

Run 6 Reduced group to 8 players which seemed to greatly help the quest ~ fairly smooth run

Run 7 Kept group reduced to 8, I only suffered lag network issues, group waited for me to recover, otherwise fairly smooth run, I did not help much except doing a very good part 2 hurl the crystal.

End result, afternoon produced enough runes to create a 3rd heart which I wanted for the 4 item bonus.
Overall, improved performace, but need more to return to predatacentermove
Overall, I question whether completionist toon lag more than noncompletionist toons?

Lag in crafting. My craft xp boost expired despite my lagging and so I did crafting with normal xp. Could not remove aguement from jade ring at all. The ingredients sat there but the window did not cycle. Lag hit in quests. It don't matter which I did, I would get hung in the air on random jumps and sometimes move backwards as much as I ran forward. Sometimes I could only turn in place. My pots would not work leaving me to die once. I keep having my treasure bury itself to where I can't pick up and then I can't seem to get the "knock" bell or "find secret doors" rods to work for me at all (I know I am newby but I could sworn you just activate it and it should work- healing does). Although I reported a few more bugs than the lag, I am having more lag now than before.

i run in ghallanda...

i am running around in V.o.T. right now, running solo-no hirelings, no lag till I got some bonus XP from fulfilling a deed in my monster manual...
it lasted a whole 1.5 seconds....

i am not experienced in monitoring lag... i only know when it happens in game... are there programs that i could use to monitor lag??? or generate a report to provide feedback...

i love this game and want to help in any way possible....

p.s. last night i was running embers asylum with 4 hirelings and had no lag all night... i had been getting crazy rubber-banding a few months back with hirelings... that seems to be gone... :)

Ghallanda 15 hours ago, so after the restart.

Deathwurm EH, 6 man. Had a huge lag spike with everyone all but frozen in place for ~2 minutes. Apart from that only minor lag spikes but the one major spike is a game breaker (though we did manage a win using Jibbers).
DoJ EH, 6 man. Plenty of smaller lag spikes but playable.
Shroud LH, 11 man. Lots of stuttering, rubberbanding and spells taking from 0 to 10 seconds to go off. Playable to a degree but hardly fun.
Quests - minor issues, nothing worth mentioning.

So, its clearly better than last week but probably still worse than before the data center moved. Note that it wasnt exactly acceptable before the move so we need significant improvements still for the game to be both playable and fun at the raid level.

The raiding scene in particular is suffering. There are very few raids posted (and I do post my own as well), they fill slowly if at all and some raids are avoided entirely (DoJ with a full raid is the most prominent). For those of us that like to raid this is game breaking. So more improventment is needed and fast or the raiders may have given then game up and left before its playable again.

Will have to see if we can get players back to the game to challenge the elite raids.

That is the big question. Obviously the lag problems have to be fixed asap and once thats done I am hoping Turbine makes a really *major* effort to entice the raiders to come back. Something like "buddy raid xp bonus and double raid droprates for a week plus 3 legendary timers for all characters level 28-30 - please come back".

Argo Last night, 9-11:

Ran Stormhorns chain. Still a bit of lag. Not unplayable like it was, but occasional hitching, freezing mid-air, and a couple of rubber bands when there were a lot of mobs spawning. Definitely more lag than the first night after Argo maintenance, but not abnormally high.

After the data center move, the first day or so was fine, then the unplayable lag really kicked in. I hope this doesn't happen again. That would be really bad for y'all's morale and ours. Is there a degradation issue with performance that might need to be looked at?

Orien. circa 7 PM Pacific March 22.
DoJ on normal to test the lag. Everyone in the raid very happy, no significant lag - multiple deaths due to wrong active E.D. and inexperience.
Legendary Shroud on Hard: Part 1 & 2 - very laggy - seemed like no significant improvement. Part 3 - Lag spikes when cube appears. Part 4 - Freeze Lag on Harry, many deaths. Part 5 - lag was bad, but the fight was doable.
Recommendation: reduce repair costs by 75% until lag issue resolved. :p

Ran Creeping Death and To Curse the Sky solo heroic elite this morning on Thelanis, there was still stuttering and rubber-banding as soon as mobs were agro'ed. The intensity of the lag increased with the number of mobs.

Sarlona. Trials of the Archons, full group for all quests. No lag even when that one portal in the first quest spawned enough mobs to get us to orange alert and with an auralock in the group.

I was doing quite well after port triggering setup in my router. Running quite normally on Cannith. Today the 23rd I jumped in to quickly run the party quest solo on Cannith and had numerous instances of freezing, and rubber banding. A lot of spells cast did not go off. I did manage to complete by running around and throwing as many firewalls and ice storms as I could. Only one sample so far but the game ran worse for me, playing from Vancouver BC, after optimization.

We will be restarting Cannith, Khyber, Orien, Sarlona, and Wayfinder at 1:00 PM Eastern (-5 GMT) today for maintenance and work related to recent lag reports. Thank you.

Hello,

Played this night:

EE 2 drags raids: lag wipe (real ubber lags for all players in the instance, form begining to end). Guildies on other quests were fine at same time.

EE GOP: impressive lag spike at each mob stacks; became unplayable at 2 brothers. We gave up after a global instance 5 mn freeze.

GUYS PLEASE CONSIDER THIS AT THE PRIORITY ONE FOR ALL OF YOU. DDO DEATH SPOTTED IF NOT SOLVED FAST.

And, for information, I will cancel my VIP next week if not solved (and abandon DDO). It is not what I want and, after all the investment in the toon, it is a real pain.

And be sure, if the case, that I will bane turbine sites and games forever. No need to explain why.

Regards

25 March 2016

LHoX - 12 man sarlona, Normal, 7pm GMT+1, lag much better, but not gone, completed.

L Tempest's Spine, 8 man, lag wiping as we speak, 8.20pm GMT+1, Sarlona, normal - far worse lag than before fix, rubber banding, full party freezes, been stuck for last 10 minutes, everyone gradually dying. Totally unplayable.

Tracert to gls.ddo.com normal, nothing out of the ordinary.

edit: We have now lag wiped.

After about 20 mins of being dead, we were able to move and run to a rest shrine :)

Well, after 82 minutes we finally finished ...

Well, Khyber last night UK time was back to being every bit as laggy as when the database got moved, the server reset on Tueday seemed to resolve some lag for a few days but things are now no different, we got lag wiped in an EE Curse the Skym full party mostly lvl 30s but couldn't cast heals/recons with enough certainty before deaths occurred, rezzes also were patchy at best. Joined an EE CitW 80 mins in progress only halfway done and after several light bouts of rubberbanding we were having real lag spikes resulting in deaths again due to heals/recons not arriving until well after being cast, towards the end in the final stages were we group on bottom island and drag mobs for quick dispatches the traps started to spawn but would take 2-3 attempts to disable before the animation would show the trap disposed off ( I was only trapped and a few folk died in those traps due to being unable to move out of the area while I was frantically disabling each trap 2-3 times before it would disable). Whatever it is that is broken at your end please get it fixed properly rather than sticky plastered only for it to breakdown again within a matter of days, Not sure what we can do to help with a fix from our end without some guidelines from you or is this purely a bandwidth issue and/or your gateway is the bottleneck (in which case I am sure you will have identified this but will not/can not make this public) and this is entirely down to financial constraints throttling the game to a slow death?
