This extended downtime is necessary due to some significant back-end systems maintenance and hardware work.

Greetings DDO team,

I am curious if the problems and others have been experiencing with the inabillity to access the DDO in game store, i.e the page either doesn't load or is extermely slow to load, if that will be addressed in monday's maintenance. Will it or not? Or is there some other means of addressing this? Thank you.

Aram

This is a Turbine wide maintenance.

IC is going to be using Steam Wallet. No idea of the impact on DDO, if any, maybe future?

https://www.infinitecrisis.com/forums/showthread.php?21223-Infinite-Crisis-Store-Update-May-18th

LoTRO says until 2 PM

https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?568724-Scheduled-Maintenance-May-18th-from-3-00AM-to-2-00PM-Eastern-(-4-GMT)

I expect the game to be up Tuesday, and if it is sooner, then it is a bonus.

really only two things right now: Does it fix the NPCs? Does it fix the pre U- whatever that altered guildships so that the game does not recognize that I have already spent real world money to buy gameworld astral shards to buy an airship? Not to complain, I love the new airship rules, I just would like the game to acknowledge that I have already spent a lot of real world capital to get the ship my guild has already; fix that, And I will spend more to get a better ship ... do not, and no more money, simple, easy to comprehend ... now, DO!

Turbine and Hardware downtime, alright. Any chance we get some fixes in the process too? Or do we see another downtime soon (TM) for them?

Is it necessary that you schedule downtime on EVERY SINGLE stat holiday that isn't US?

Couldn't you shift updates to Wednesdays or something?

In a M-F work week, doing serious maintenance on any day other than Monday is fraught with peril.

Dunno, move to Australia maybe.

If you log out to the character selection screen, and go to the store there, then log in, I've found that it will often display the store in the game. Just a work around

I agree mid-week maintenance would be preferable. Be even nicer one or two servers stayed available.

Golly gee, everyone.

This was a TURBINE WIDE system down day.

No Infinite Crisis.
No Lord of the Rings.
No DDO.

Turbine is doing something with the pay system and using STEAM for Infinite Crisis. Also, something about the Russian servers stopping on May 31, 2015, and the Russian players that want to continue playing have until that date to submit a ticket for LoTRO.

Further evidence that no one ever reads my posts, like the one I posted on page 1 of this thread about this downtime today.

Devs must be able to work their maintenance in better. Smaller patches, more frequently from 3am-7am, something like that. Also, whoever predicts the amount of downtime needs to be fired. Always hours off, c'mon man, at least use the old under-commit over-deliver trick. You know if you think it is going to take 3hrs tell us 9 so when we check and it is finally up after 7 hrs, we can say, "man, good job." Also people wouldn't start posting and complaining if they weren't told a time and 3hrs + later, they are still trying to play.

Instead of complaining....do something constructive that doesn't involve the computer. Sure, its fun, but it isn't everything. everything will still be here when the login authentications will be fixed. and as for those gimmies...... get over it. you evidently can afford to whine, so dont hound the poor folks at Turbine for doing their Jobs. they are trying to do customer service the best way they know how. yes, there are times when time is imperative.....but is this really one of them? My Gods, its freaking summer, or near to it. there is an entire world out there that can be seen. Free to Play isnt any less important that those that pay, and I think a Majority of People will agree with me. Let them fix whats needed and be done with yer whining

Actually, been noticing encryption issues in game with the store so does not surprise me that they are looking at their code.... Web server security 101 dictates that these scripts be isolated. So, the fact that myaccount is up does not mean that the game server login will be up. IMO

See this is what happens when people get paid by the hour. I say for every hour they go over estimated time they should be docked pay. That would insure either they estimate downtime better or and here's a novel idea. It gets done in a timely manner. LOL, of course I am just joking, have lots of respect for the Dev's and all they do.

People are wanting compensation I think we are going about this all wrong...
I figure that owing to a loss of service people are being forced into activities they would never normally do.

Fitness (we all know this is dangerous) - leading to increased injuries / time of health care professionals = £30k
Over eating -leading to injuries - already large people having to make additional trips to access food from kitchen / even to local shop - possible death - mind preoccupied with what to swap in for the neckie - £200k
Marital relations (very dangerous) - injury risk is high / even worse possibility of offspring that may even be human - £2mill (per child)
Board games - Mental illness high - paranoia (They always gang up on me in monopoly syndrome) / schizophrenia (anyone who has played patience knows what I mean) = £50k

Total cost = Lots

Therefore we sue, forget about compensation that is peanuts.
Give all the money to that guy on the forum who clearly knows what he is talking about as he will sort it for us. Then we will log in to a world where level cap is 10 and a paralyser was fictional and will take us two years to find a way to beat down the titan (or at least a way to stop the muppet breaking the pillars at the wrong time) and Velah was the only dragon in game and we went wow every time we saw her.
..... and wf were banned from our Guild and we never followed Hag .... and greasing people in midfight got every one laughing rather than getting booted after a quest :)

My experience tells me that any IT org worth their salt has a good Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP), but then again, I deal with systems that aren't allowed to go down. That's the real difference here; Turbine can get away with it because its a game. I get that. But the trend is clear. They are lousy as predicting how long they will be down for maintenance.

This is true, but it still doesn't stop the problem. It's sad really, because all they have to do is 1 tiny little thing, and the mob would turn away to go burn down someone else's home. And this 1 tiny little thing, is something that is very rarely done by MMOs, mainly because they are very stupid.

And that 1 tiny thing, is telling us players what went wrong.

All we get is: "It's taking longer!" But never a: "While implimenting changes A, B, and C, we found a massive bug that didn't show up on the Test servers! We need some time to be able to find a way to fix this bug that just showed up without warning!"

We have no information! All we have and can see, are the Devs being stupid and lazy, always making mistakes every downtime and being too lazy to fix it in a timely fasion.

That's a lot of potential risk and sounds like no small changes.

With even less risk we would have done lots of testing and a few dummy-runs to properly gauge how long the process takes. I'm sure that's standard practice.

That is not the point. The system is inherently flawed. For example its why you use a star hub configuration in networking so that if a client or single RAID Array goes down the whole network does not cease functioning. Redundancy 101 keeps systems functioning even during hardware maint. This is bad IT at the consumers expense!

Males exaggerate - we all know that 6 inches is really a foot in a man's mind.
Women would put up a shelf in half the time of a bloke - yes it would not be straight and fall down in a week but it would go up without all that measuring rubbish. However as they would be multi tasking and doing all those other jobs ( whatever they maybe, dusting something pointless or something no one in their right mind would care about) it would actually take longer in the end.

So on this evidence I can only conclude that Turbine is staffed purely by women.
Men would say 6 hours and really it would be 4.
Server keeps breaking... a man would be so focused this task would be done to perfection and never break.

Therefore the solution is simple. I will live in a small hut very well guarded in an unknown location for a very long time :)

And I just wasted 1 1/2 hrs reinstalling the game because I thought it had something to do with Steam breaking it - for some reason Steam said the files versions were out of sync when doing an integrity test and proceeded to redownload everything. After this maintenance, all Crisis Coin purchases must be conducted through Steam Wallet. For more information on this change, please see this post.

Thanks for your patience, and we'll see you back in the Lost Sectors soon!

Um.... Honestly, it is fine to be frustrated. It is fine to be upset. Big problem is having expectations that cannot be lived up to. I have NEVER heard of an organization that has servers up 99.9% of the time. This game and turbine keep it up about 95%. They are in the REALLY high margins for games. Also, I personally don't like bot players, this game is the only one that is almost bot free. Keep all that in mind.

Not sure why the Downtime notice has not been updated

Yes, this.
I don't mind that things are over-schedule.
I don't know IT so i don't know or really care if this is normal. I can deal just fine.

It's just that I'm coming back from yet another break from the game and spent far, far to0 long today trying to figure out if there is something wrong with my account or my install or was it that I'm simply in-line and the update servers are backed up?
All simply for the lack of someone updating the announcement until just now... what? 4 hours after the fact.

I suppose the assumption is everyone is on twatter or faceblarg. But i don't do those abominations.

We are working to open the game worlds as soon as possible. We will keep you updated.

Just a thought, I know you guys are understaffed, has it occurred to you guys to review and improve your maintenance procedures so that these prolonged and unscheduled delays are minimized or at the very least: communicated to the player base in a timely manner? By my count we're almost 5 hours past the scheduled up time and Cordovan is just now getting around to informing us (way after the fact) that they're not QUITE going to meet the noon restart?

1.) decouple the forums/login from the games servers this just doubles the frustration when we can't even post while a prolonged delay is ongoing. Clearly Cordovan could not even log in to post. This is another failing of the new forums in a long list.
2.) There's no way for global admin to log in when the players can't log in... In the future consider FTPing to the HTML files of the forum and hand inserting a delay notice. this is simple and possible with any plain text editor (notepad), in fact you can copy/paste a template and insert it into every forum headliner during such times and remove it after the fact. This allow you to communicate despite the fact that the login server is down.
3.) adopt more modern industry standards for processes and restarting procedures, if possible implement more automated scripts the consistency with which DDO goes way over the scheduled re-start time suggests that you guys are trying to restart a 1930's biplane by manually spinning it's propeller while pouring gas down it's carburetor, not hitting the power button on a solid state computer server in 2015.

We are now 5 hours passed their estimated timeframe for maintenance. I think that now they ought to be evaluating a rollback on whatever maintenance changes they were conducting.

Also, they should also consider compensation to those paying customers that are currently unable to enjoy what they pay for.

that's typical when the entire system is brought offline... the server status checks the game worlds, not the login server (which is why you keep getting the errors when trying to log in)

That is true. However, you use your game login to connect to the Forums and not make a seperate forum account, so the Login Server is the same for the game and forums. If the login server was down for the game, we wouldn't be able to log into the forums either, such as what happened earlier.

Oh yeah, I remember those.
This is very similar to those things in that those and this seems to be completely out of the control of the DDO team.
In other words, it's not their fault but the fault of the larger organization and there aint a dang thing anyone at DDO can do about it.
They are in the same boat as us.

Maybe I'm coloring my memory of those events with my feelings about this event, but it seems to me that the player frustration in all of those cases and this one were compounded by a lack of info as to what's going on.

It's almost like the DDO team is as totally frustrated and annoyed as we are.
Whereas, had this been an error on the DDO team's side, they would be all over the forums with ETA's and explanations (accurate or not).

Only thing is, it doesn't matter who does what or whose end is at fault.
We just want some info.
I'll even take BS info.

You get what you pay for.

Right now, as a VIP contributor to the game, they are effectively 5 hours outside of their expected up time to me. Per their EULA, they don't have to do anything. However, companies that face unexpected complications with the delivery of their service usually try to put on a good face, and do something extra to make up for those complications. The F2P model is an interesting case here. However, if you do not pay, you arguably have less platform for complaint about their service delivery.

EDIT: And following this post, it looks like I am back in. Thank you, Turbine.

it most likely is a shared database... and i would imagine that they have an entire database server farm all of it's own... vBulletin just needs to query the database... DDO needs actual authentication from the "login" server (I apologize, I should have referred to it as authentication server from the start)

I work IT for a major company (several hundred thousand employees across the globe) and we have 99.999% uptime. However, I just spent two million dollars for three years of Microsoft support on one of our applications to ensure we get that uptime and that's just one of our many applications.

I'm guessing Turbine doesn't have two million dollars to spend for vendor provided support so they have to rely on their internal talent.

However, that being said, Puppet has an open source version and works well at software deployments! (or Chef, Ansible, DSC, take your pick).

You do understand that sharing login info between two separate databases is incredibly easy to do right. There is no way these two login servers are the same.

Indeed, and this is something I hate about most MMOs, or even most gaming componies period. They rarely ever give an explanation. I mean heck, remember years ago when every game patch no matter how small also had Patch Notes? Even that is rarely seen anymore. But it's usually worse actually during the matenance. They will usually give NO infomation at all, not even another estimated timer. Even after it's all done, they will be 'It's fixed!' and never speak of it again.

I do. Percentage wise, the downtime per dollar was low.

But, the only time these outages really matter is when the customers ask to be compensated for them, and then it does figure into their balance sheet. Asking for reimbursement (or, some otherwise comparable perk) is the only way to get leadership's attention that the extended downtime is hurting the books...

I've been around since just after EU servers were turned on, but didn't have any interest in forums, Codemaster or otherwise :)

I'm not criticising our devs on this one, like you said, this isn't really a DDO issue, it's just that DDO is being impacted by it. So someone somewhere has dropped the ball on it.

In my line of work we have a Prince2 document called a "Lessons Learned Log" that's reviewed at the start of a project. It gets updated whenever there's a lesson to be passed onto the next project team. Guess what it should already have had in it based on past experience? :)

They choose not to do a 3am-7am one becasue on the other side of the world, where people do play, it would be playing time.

Then we will log in to a world where level cap is 10 and a paralyser was fictional and will take us two years to find a way to beat down the titan (or at least a way to stop the muppet breaking the pillars at the wrong time) and Velah was the only dragon in game and we went wow every time we saw her.

will we be getting a separate thread folder for ghallanda downtime within the forum, so I can create a shortcut? referencing the late Terry Pratchett's "Going Postal", I assume that DDO was made by wonderful, caring enthusiasts who then had it stolen from under them by some REACHER GILT-type character, who then proceeded to squeeze every last red cent out of the cash cow, put off spending any of the profits on upgrades and used smoke and mirrors to distract the punters from the chronic issues besetting the system?

Alunjax123
05-19-2015, 09:29 AM
I am sure that the posts in this forum are littered with pleas from Ghallanda's long-suffering player community for compensation for loss of service, but maybe we can just get a discount to our monthly fees as members; if we are getting a creaky, second rate service, why should we pay the same as other servers?
