View Full Version : Why minimum level to use tomes?

If a new player starts the game (yes I have a friend that did) and he makes an artificer (I know one that did) and he buys the +6 supreme tome (again I know someone that did) why make them wait til...what...24 to use the tome? We already only get certain stat bonuses as we level up so whats the point? Let the new player use the new sparkly supreme tome at lvl 1 so he can start enjoying the bonuses as he levels. As it is he has to wait til he is 24 or so before he can even use it. So if he wants to TR he can't if he wants to take advantage of the tome.

This seems so stupid.

Why you can't use a stat or skill tome at lvl 1 and then let it be used as you level up is beyond me.

Yes, particularly because it was a store item. Tomes of all types should probably be changed so that you can eat them at any level, but make it very clear that the bonuses only come into play at the certain levels.

As well, the character sheet should show the top tier of the tome types you've used, but that's for a character sheet pass to handle.

you are asking for 6 sets of 6 books that can be eaten at the appropriate levels. I betchya that's how it would be implemented.

FYI, the +6 tome can be eaten at level 23, and you don't have to TR at level 20, so -- as-is currently with the game we have, this player/friend of yours can grind out levels to 23, eat the tome, and then TR for the first time back to level 1.

That's not the point. Yes he can grind to 23...but give me 1 good reason he should have to? The stat bonuses from Tomes are already set to happen at certain levels. Sure make the +6 wait til 23 but if a new player at lvl 1 wants to spend 5k TP's to buy a +6 Supreme Tome why in the world would you make him wait til 23 to use it? This player is spending real money to get this item...he is making a big investment into the game...and this could very well be his first toon so he is effectively screwed til he "grinds" to 23.

Yes I know it has always been set up obviously but my point is...Why?

Make the store bought tomes useable at any level but still only come into effect at the same levels.

Hell even the dropped tomes should be useable at any level as the effect still waits til the right level to start working so again...why?

I tend to agree. There's no reason for the restriction anymore, if there ever was.

I have to agree, I always thought this was silly.

The bonuses apply at their right levels but why do I have to wait for said level before I can use the tome?

I don't understand the thought process behind this. Though I have a sneaking suspicion that it's an older requirement back from when we didn't have 28 levels and an end game.

I never really understood the point of this restriction either. I don't tend to keep lower level tomes just to free up inventory space. On several characters, I've had higher level tomes waiting and had to hunt on the auction/shard houses for lower level ones so that I could LR and make changes that required a lower level tome. It would be great if I could just eat the higher level tome that I already have and gain the level appropriate benefits of it.

This mechanic is probably a remnant from when tomes did not last through a TR. I can kinda see the point in that situation, but it certainly doesn't apply today.

Knowing the ML requirement, why did he even buy it? Didn't he have to manually select the "show all items" button to even see it? And don't most new players end up deleting their first couple toons until they are better at building them?

I agree with your point, but am left wondering how your friend got himself into this situation.

EDIT - Wow I'm going to have to take back what I said. I just checked a L11 toon I have and sure enough, in the store even when set to "Filter for Character" the supreme tomes (all the way up to +6) show up. It does say L23, but I can see how that would be easy to miss. My apologies.

Would be nice to see a better mechanic put into place here.

Remove the level requirement to consume the tome and only apply the bonuses as they achieve the appropriate level.
and..
show these tomes in the player character sheet along with the information as to what tome they have consumed vs what is being applied.

No need for multiple books. They already have the "apply bonuses as you level up"-mechanic in place. Just make it work the same way it already works for TRs.

Knowing the ML requirement, why did he even buy it?

I can think of two very good reasons to buy a tome which you cannot yet use.

1) some tomes (i.e. +6s) are only available for a limited time
2) tomes are on sale

Both of which are happening now.

Makes sense. Thanks.

It didn't even occur to me until this thread, but yeah, this needs to change. And it needs to change very quickly for the exact reason detailed in the OP.

The original ML requirement was instituted before tomes only applied their partial value based on your level. So back in the day, if you could eat a +4 tome at level 1, you'd get the full +4 bonus at level 1. (But you never could thanks to the ML.)

Once they added the logic to apply partial tomes as you level, that same day all tomes should have lost their ML restrictions.

Also:

/signed to the idea that the character sheet should show both the current tome effect as well as the total tome bonus you have on that stat.

Playing advocate for the devil I would say:

1. Because Turbine is making money with the hamster wheel of reincarnation
2. Because the time they make you be able to eat a tome before the threshold level (e.g. at lvl 1) would bring a lot of bug reports of players that would expect to have the +6 right away from the start.
3. Because (at least in the past) you weren't even able to even buy tomes or hearts from the store that your character not apply to (e.g. minimum level restrictions)
4. Because it is written in the description it has a minimum level
5. Because changing the 'minimum level' definition of the tome would probably totally mess up other things that have a ML

I do agree with the two suggestions here, that bought tomes should be capable of being eaten/read immediately, and that we need more detailed descriptions within the character sheet toward all tomes that have been eaten/read.

My prior response wasn't against the idea, simply stating the "how to" accomplish eating the +6 tome in our current game.

totally agree, I did the same with a +6 tome and completely forgot the min level to use even though I've been playing the last 4 years or so, lol <doh>.
Didn't even read the page with the tome description on it.
