I have a Fighter character I played a few years ago based on MrWizard's Cannon Fodder build and I loved it. The build had a great mix of tanking ability and solid DPS. I like the overall role of a tank but found most tank builds took forever to solo quests due to low DPS output - they survived just fine, but it was tedious. Cannon Fodder had the best of both worlds and felt like playing an armored knight. With U23 and its boost to tanking and S&B DPS I was hoping to revisit the character to see if I could regain that great balance. He is a human pure fighter and I don't have a +20 heart of wood so he needs to stay predominately fighter, but most of the post-U23 tanking builds I've found are Pally-focused. I have seen a couple of Fighter Kensai/Vanguard builds, but I haven't found one post-U23 build focused on Stalward Defender; either Stalwart/Kensai or Stalwart/Vanguard.

I did find an excellent blog post on the subject titled "Vanguard Tanking (http://sockofstuffing.wordpress.com/2014/10/06/vanguard-tanking/)" that referenced serveral U23 build options that described what I was looking for. (I couldn't find the author's name or I would give proper credit/rep!) But they are high level descriptions rather than detailed builds. There were two in particular for which I was hoping I could get some help as to what the detailed builds would look like, particularly in terms of specific Enhancement selection between the trees.

The high-level descriptions (there is more in the post) of the two builds in the blog post were:

1. The Vanguard Fighter Tank: "with heavy investment in Vanguard up to tier 5 and then capstone and the rest in Stalwart except enough to get the tactical DC from Kensai and some points for heavy blades. For the human race tree I add enough for the first ability (strength) and then 10% heal amp." This is the build the author is playing and he finds it a good "happy medium".

2. The pure tank: "with less onus on DPS and Vanguard, with tier 5 Stalwart Defender with capstone. The key here is LOTS of HP and defense (including PRR and MRR) with okay amount of DPS but with serious tilt towards taking little or no damage."

If someone could help me flesh out what these two builds might look like I would sure appreciate it!

For the classic S&B ftr tank, I would probably stick with something like my Dwarven Defender, but with a heavy investment into Vanguard: at least 41 APs for capstone and probably tier 5s. You'll want somewhere between 13 and 25 APs into Stalwart D. for the defensive stance bonuses. Which leaves somewhere between 14 to 26 APs to spread between Kensei and human.

Let's take a quick look at possible enhancements:

Another possibility is 41 APs into Vanguard for capstone and 33 APs into SD for Block & Cut; but this leaves only 8 APs for Kensei & human. And I'm not convinced that B&C (effectively +12.5% doublestrike to overall DPS) is better than Armored Strength (+10 Melee Power); or at least enough of an improvement to be worth the extra APs.

despite how much it pains me to say it, if you want to be snb...go pally or go home.

Not really. A pure fighter in DC with a Dwarven Axe is going to be plenty for anything we have now. Paladin is just an easy button.

OP's char is pure ftr and he doesn't have an LR +20, so his only choices are stick with ftr or TR. I presented a possibility for the former; if he chooses to TR instead, plenty of options for the latter.

Thank you very much for the build input, Unbongwah. I noticed that you've provided a tremendous amount of input and advice to folks looking for help on the forums and I want you to know how much I appreciate it! This gives me the detail I need to revisit my fighter's build to see if I can recapture that great tank/DPS mix with my fighter as an armored knight S&B character. If it turns out I need to go Pally to get that experience again then so be it, but this is the info I need to give my fighter a chance.

sure, but paladin has more dps, more survivability, and more flexibility. fighter cant get +crit range and tier 5 vanguard at the same time. if you did take keen edge over vg t5 id pretty much 100% go pure for the kensei capstone, which means no mc.

paladin on the other hand, gets the traditional paladin package as well as a clearly superior crit buff which they dont need to spec for, and meaningful double strike which they again dont need to spec for, all at lvl 15. various splashes and pure are viable alternatives for the last 5 levels.

there just isnt much reason to go fighter, and no reason at all when you want a build the main focus of which is kill stuff and stay alive and use a shield. killing stuff is easier on a pally, staying alive is easier on a pally, using shields involves no chocie and no sacrifice on pallies. easybutton/overkill or not they are clearly and massively better. depressing to me but it is what it is.

I don't know how to post builds but mien is pretty simple.. dwarven tank con build. pure fighter. sittin on 1900 hp, 194 ac, 187 prr 85 mrr, while blocking absorb 85% elemental damage. dps not huge but its enough to hold agro. I still have gear to farm out before callinghim complete but I can tank the dragonlich in thunderholm with np along with the dragons in other thunderholm raid. I twisted in barb healing, healing cacoon and healing spring and I run in sentinel. im extreamly hard to kill and even have cheap ress ability, plus more than enough sp to get me through with out a wizardry item. if tankin what you want I would reccoment this. I am currently researching to drop some tank ability as its more than enough and get some more dps. and maybe some more intim as that's only gunna be sittin on about 85 when done. If want more specifics look for me on cannith server. Names Brolik Bullhead im in divich ruin guild.

here is the build i am currently playing on my S&B fighter. The enhancement are not accurate as the planner did not have the Vanguard tree in it. My build is heavy in the stalwart tree, but I have enough DPS that I am ok when solo. I enjoy this build, your mileage may vary.
