Hello:

When leveling up there are the two options to either stay on the path or choose a different path. My char is a Ranger. If I go to the ranger trainer what does not staying on the path do? Does it mean I stay being a ranger but I get to pick my feats and stuff? I don't understand. I can't find information on this so any link would be appreciated. Thank you

yes it means you choose the feats. If you feel you know the game well enough, then definitely do your own. Some of those paths are outdated.

The paths are outdated, the best thing to do is research the character type you want and build accordingly.

Or simply ask for build help on the forums.

Check out the Character Creation (http://ddowiki.com/page/Character_creation) page on ddowiki.com.

"Step 3 Path

Here you can either choose to follow a pre-built path that the developers have set up, or fully customize your character. For most new players, it's recommend you customize and follow either our Category:Starting a class guides (http://ddowiki.com/page/Category:Starting_a_class_guides) or select a build from our Category:Builds for New Players (http://ddowiki.com/page/Category:Builds_for_New_Players) category, as the default paths tend to have some flaws."

I agree with this quote from that page. I wouldn't suggest anyone follow one of those auto-generated paths.

You won't really learn much by sticking to the pre made path. You will make mistakes, but if you stick with it, you will figure things out.

The first positive move you made was to come to these forums. If you can get past the egos and vitirol constantly spewed around here, there is actually a trove of excellent information to be found here.

Here's another somewhat helpful page from ddowiki for starting your first character: Skill Usefulness (http://ddowiki.com/page/Skill_usefulness).

And a link to download the character planner that most people use to plan out their builds: RJCyberware's DDO Character Planner (http://www.rjcyberware.com/DDO/DDOCharGen.html).

Welcome to DDO, OP. :)

Historically the pre-made paths are...not very good. I actually haven't checked to see what they're like since the U19 Enhancement overhaul. Perhaps they got better? But in any case, you are better off customizing your build.

See my Elven Ranger thread for a couple of examples of pure rgrs. Also check out EllisDee37's Tempest Trapmonkey (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/423116-Tempest-Trapmonkey-for-new-players). If you have questions about feats etc., feel free to ask.

This is all really great advice, thank you so much. And replying to one of the posts, this forum really is a treasure trove!! You folks are all cool to answer.

My ranger is a level 7. At next level up, can I "fix things" to choose the preferred feats or am I stuck? I am interested in particular in changing my favored enemy, for example.

You will get to pick additional favoured enemies as you level. See the ranger granted feat progression on the wiki here: http://ddowiki.com/page/Ranger

You can't change your past feat choices at level up but they are not set in stone.

You can change feats (including favoured enemy) in house Jurasco with a mindflayer called Fred : http://ddowiki.com/page/Fred

See the details of the hall of the mark quest on his page for a free feat exchange.

Swapping feats can be done at any time and requires either talking to Fred (http://ddowiki.com/page/Fred)or doing an LR (http://ddowiki.com/page/Lesser_Reincarnation). I recommend the former, particularly since you're still at a level where feat-swapping is relatively cheap; the dragonshard cost goes up 10x every 4 lvls.

On feat changes, it's really worthwhile to make any changes you know you want as early as possible. The cost in platinum and materials to swap a feat using Fred goes up every four levels, i.e. it will go up at level 8, then again at 12 etc. The cost is quite manageable at level 7, but can be a bit sever for a new player at the higher levels (especially for the dragonshard you need for each swap).

And you may know this already, but you can't change skill points or Ability scores after the fact except by rebuilding the character through a reincarnation. Feats are the only things you choose on level-up that you have the option to change later.

OP, if you give your character's name and what server it is on, people on here can probably send you a couple Imperfect Siberys Dragonshards to swap feats with that aforementioned Fred npc. I'd send you one if you're on Argonessen, myself.
