View Full Version : Maximum Intelligence Non-Shroud

Hi guys, hoping you can help me with this. My wiz has just about equal points in Archmage and Pale master trees, leaning toward Archmage for Master of Magic. However, for roleplay reasons I don't want to play a Palemaster. An undead wizard, despite all the benefits, is just not my bag. Here's my issue: with Shroud of the lich, Improved Shroud and the two additional intelligence in the Palemaster tree, I'm getting 6 intelligence from this one tree. As far as I can tell, there is no other way to get that 6 additional intelligence. The most I can figure, with the remaining 39 AP I have apart from the Archmage tree, is 4 more int. Am I mistaken?

- Litch gives +2 int & The tier 5 ability Improved shrouding gives an additional +2 int when in Litch form.
- All the capstones cancel each other out.
- All the tier 3 / 4 int boosts cancel each other out.
So palemaster provides +4 int over the archmage or EK trees.

This can be offset somewhat with the additional DC you get for two schools in archmages tier 5. (effective 2 int)

You currently have
+2 int AM capstone
+2 int AM tier 3/4
+2 int PM tier 3/4
= 6 int, with the ability to toggle litch to go up to 10 int.

Given that you're not playing an undead wizard, getting any of the palemaster cores & tier 5 looks like a waste of AP.
The best (non litch) int distribution I can work out is:

+4 int from 41ap in archmage, tier 3/4 int & up to capstone
+2 int from 22ap in palemaster = tier 3 & 4 int
+1 int from 12ap in EK = tier 3 int.
= 7 int with archmage tier 5 for +1 dc in 2 schools, (making those an effective 9int) with 5ap left over.

Pale masters got an int boost I don't see why archmage wouldn't.

Well, that int can't technically be "made up" because it stacks with everything in the game. Meaning whatever other int you get, you could also theoretically tack on the PM int on top of it.

However, this is based on the assumption of:

41 AP capstone (AM or PM)
22 AP tier 4 int in the "other" wizard tree (AM or PM)
6 AP racial int +2 (drow or morninglord)
69 AP total

That only leaves 11 AP to play with, which means such a build can't get any int out of the eldritch knight tree. So the +2 int from spending 22 AP in EK is a real way to make up 2 of the int you aren't getting from lich.

EDIT: Which, of course, isn't possible, since what I'm essentially saying is "spend 41 in AM, 22 in PM and 22 EK." Since you can't spend 85 AP, that means you can't really make up any int at all. At best you could squeeze +1 from EK, but doing so limits you to +1 max from racial.

Thanks guys. Even more incentive to shroud. Tough to sacrifice 2-3 Int for roleplaying, when I spent all those levels trying to squeeze the most Int out of everything. The advantages offered from lich, self healing, +con, +Int, etc. makes me feel silly for choosing anything else. But as in pnp, I'm not feeling an undead wiz.
