View Full Version : Monkless Ranger, thoughts?

So, while I most certainly am working towards buying monk I do not yet own it SO! I have come up with an idea I would like some help with. Remember, this build is aimed at leveling because I want something fun and interesting to build up my ranger past lives other than pure ranger

12 Ranger
6 Paladin
2 Rogue

Paladin is for stance and save boosts.
Rogue is for trapping and sneak attack damage.

Question on Race, elf gives nice increases to both point blank shot range, and longbow damage, alongside that it has DM of shadow which gives displace/invis and i guess shadow walk too. However for some bizarre reason halflings are the go to race for the typical and dangerous monkcher, keeping in mind that we're levelling here not really focussing on endgame except as long as it takes to farm that 20 tokens, i'm leaning towards elf but i'd like to hear thoughts for other races. (I don't own the iconics so don't bother with those)

I'm a 3rd life toon with should i TR 2 fighter 1 ranger as my past lives in the bank. This means a bit of versatility when it comes to spending those stat points.

Beyond this I kinda need help so please discuss!

Are you planning on focusing ranged or melee combat?
Additionally I'm unsure if you can use defensive stance with another combat stance (like Power Attack), do you know if you can?

I've played Ranger-18/rogue-1/fighter-1 and

Both are really good and flexible builds, with full service trapping and UMD. Both can blue-bar heal themselves effectively and both are complemented by fury of the wild or divine crusader destinies.
The 2nd build, which I've just Tr'd out of has the advantage of bringing full deathward and FOM to the table, and really rocks in divine crusader.

You could try Ranger 12/Fighter 6/Rogue 2 as well, for a more traditional-like dual khopesh build (Unless you really want that healing potential from Paladin).
A tempest with two kukri that was something like Ranger 12/Rogue 5/Fighter 3 may work out too--though I've not looked in to it. Could be interesting.

I'm planning on primarily ranged dps, i usually play with others and in that sort of situation I find range more enjoyable. I think i'd probably sit in precision as far as combat stance goes. I don't think you can be in two at once if it names them as combat stances.

seriously though ranger is fine without monk, just while your manyshot is on cooldown youre far better off in melee.
that or take 6 artificer for repeaters if you dont want to melee at all, my suggestions for that below

If you're planning to TR ASAP after hitting 20, then I think this combo is too backloaded: either you delay your rgr lvls which means backloading your extra feats; or you backload your pally lvls, in which case you delay getting defensive stance. Since most HTRs park at 18 to XP-farm their way to 20 (to avoid overlevel XP penalties), rgr 12 / pal 6 would be a decent combo, but you'd have no trap skills.

Presuming you don't want just another Tempest Trapmonkey, I would consider a mostly-rgr build like Noyellowbar (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/430998-Noyellowbar-a-100-monk-free-U19-Build-(15Ranger-4Paladin-1Fighter)) instead; I posted a rog-splashed variant on pg 2 if you want to keep trap skills.

Instead of rogue try the artificer path for Repeating Xbows access , conjured bolts and trapping. It was a visible dmg increase and I did swap bows and RXBow often in areas I was overwhelmed by targets.
The sneak attack damage you aim for comes with Deepwood Stalker Enhancements anyway.

I'm not sure how married you are to trapping or ranged, but I am giving a go at 12Rgr/5Clr/3Pal. No idea how it'll go as I'm only level 2, but if you're interested I can throw it on here.

It's built a bit more for epics, as I wanted to try to at least have better saves. There's a significant difference between running with saves and without in epic, and I'm tried of being save-less. :)

And, to follow up on Romaniac's point, a level of artificer also gets you a lever puller, which is awesome for soloing or running shortman. I personally don't like crossbows so would use regular bows, but that's a personal issue with them.
