My next life is coming up fast, and I'm planning to go bard before finishing up my completionist with druid. The plan is to go THF to utilize the Moonhowl Greataxe and Mad Lute. Since I also want evasion and full trapping skills, the obvious choice is to go Rog2/Ftr2/Brd16. I have +5 tomes in Dex/Con, and +4 tomes in everything else. Anyone have a really good THF build? Any suggestions on unique feat/enhancement choices? I love unique spins on classic choices (my current life is a dwarf radiant titan with TYWA) NOTE: I plan to TR again as soon as I hit 20, so epic levels are not a consideration. Go nuts!

Why these particular weapons? Just for flavor? Mad Lute is suboptimal: its stats are mostly geared towards caster bard, yet its lousy base DPS is exacerbated by not using CHA for dmg. Moonhowl is somewhat better, but you're not gonna use a ML:4 weapon for long.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Since the Mad Lute is not CHA based, I might as well go STR based melee. There are plenty of great two-handers between 4 and 18. On top of that, I'll be using the Mad Lute for all of one level, since I'll likely bank most of 19 and level long just enough to hit a slayer or explorer reward for 20.

I'm figuring it's not worth going past Brd14 if I'm not going to at least 18. Inspire Heroics looks lame, and none of the Bard 6 spells are must-haves. Maybe Rog2/Ftr4/Brd14 would be better? On the other hand, since most TR lives effectively cap at 18, it may not matter in the slightest.

I would recommend to take 15th bard level in case you decide that you like bards and want to fool around in epics, for inspire excellence.
If you want to use blunt, do not bypass Shining Devastation.
Or if you have quarterstaves, you can go 15/5 rogue thief acrobat.
If you are not taking divine levels for Divine Might, dump charisma.

Also, three barbarian levels can give you Supreme Cleave. Cleaving is fun. When else are you going to dip Barb, if not on the bard life?

Consider investing few points in dex so that your evasion does not suck.

16/2/2 bard/fvs or cleric/rogue

hage displace divine might, spin for the win. you win.

next time i do bard though i think i might try 15 bard 3 druid 2 fvs wf.

bard for songs, hage, pl, umd; druid for fatal harrier and extra seeker, fvs for extra greatsword dmg (sos works nicely with the wc frost enhancements) and divine might. only downside is no evasion or trap skills...but you dont need those anyway.

i'm feeling that you don't really care much about how 'bardy' this is, you just want to be through a bard life. 16/2/2 is always a solid choice. swapping out the fighter levels for cleric/fvs is a tasty alternative now with divine might. you say that none of the 6th level spells wow you, and its true most of them are meh, but don't underestimate ottos irresistable. even with a dumped charisma, that's 15-25 seconds or so of single target 'you stand there and dance like an idiot' CC on anything with a brain and no SR, and sometimes even with SR if you lucky.

if you don't mind giving that up, 14/4/2 is also fine. 13 bard would be your cutoff to get GH from your blue bar. if you don't mind scrolling or using clickies you could go even lower.

while i agree that greatclubs are a suboptimal weapon, you could just go for the flavor of it... think how cheap you'll be able to get them. lol

possible off-the-wall idea: 9 bard 8 fighter 3 rogue or 10 bard 8 fighter 2 rogue kensai maces and clubs. this focus also applies to quarterstaves. 3 rogue to put some points into acrobat. 9 bard is enough for hage/displacement. 10/8/2 would pick up FoM and DD. use staves for most of your fighting, but you can also whip out a meaty greatclub when the mood strikes. start with 12-14 int (12 is technically enough. 14 is better), 14 con (or more. depends your preference), 10-12 dex (you don't need it to dual-wield, but don't dump it, or your reflex save will suck), 10-12 cha or so... and dump the rest in str.. and cleave cleave cleave! ^_^

Depends on what you want.

For just getting to 20, 16/2/2 works perfectly, though deeper splits work too. I personally struggled between 10bard/5rog/5fvs qstaff build and 10bard/8fig/2rog sword-swinger. Opted for the swords, so fighter it is. I'm going up to 28, so this split makes sense, you get the last fighter levels pretty late.

My motivation for the deeper splits are the lacking bard enhancements. It's good to have a decent melee tree to take to tier 5, be it from rogue5 (acrobat/staves), fvs5 for warpriest, or fighter8 for kensai. Going deeper than sprint boost in bards just doesn't seem worth it.

Regardless, it's a good idea to front-load bard levels, at least until you get displacement.

Sprint boost, extend+buffs and fascinate for the occasional oh-**** situation makes this an extremely fun split to level. Some selfheals to top the fun. The lack of saves will hurt later on, 2 rogue levels are really a good idea, disarm the traps that you wouldn't really survive running through.

Not sure how the whole iconic TR to non iconic thingy works but the PDK charisma to hit/dmg w/greatswords sounds right up your THF bards alley.

I have a flavor/challenge/ for-fun toon
2arti/6 rogue /bard max int repeater& rune arm spell singer.
Slow to solo but full trap skills all the Cha based social skills.
Been a ton of fun to play.

As you would expect very slow going at the later levels but with stormsinger cloak song regen and spell singer sp regen will go all day and all night. A great utility build that slots very nicely in a party.

As I've said on several threads now, the human 15 bard / 5 rogue / 1 barb split, using qstaffs, is incredibly strong.
sure you don't have divine might, but you do get from the barb splash:

+3 Improved PA (+6 damage for THF weapons)
the often overlooked furious rage (when raged and miss your attack by rolling 1, you gain a stackable +1 rage bonus to attack and damage for six seconds. stacks fade one at a time) which works not only under barbarian rage, but also under the rage spell.
the sweet +10% run speed increase
defensive bonuses from OS (+6 ac, +3% dodge)
