View Full Version : Please help me choose a staff paladin build!

I hadn't planned on TRing my staff dude just yet, but I don't currently have any heroic characters I really feel like playing and I want to take advantage of this weekend's 20% heroic XP bonus.

I want to get him a paladin life next. He will be using quarterstaves. I will probably run him in epics up to 28, but I don't care about EE performance on this life -- it's mostly just for past lives, and I'll probably be mostly running EH. I'm probably going to get him a martial past life, so chances are he'll be running most of the time in LD when he is in epics.

I'm going to post a few builds I'm thinking about. I'd love comments on them, suggestions of other builds, etc.

Hard requirements:

* Enough paladin levels to have a paladin icon at 20 and qualify for a paladin past life

* Staff Specialization by no later than level 18, preferably by level 12 or 13 -- this requires 5 monk or 5 rogue levels

* Qualify for Overwhelming Critical with a +4 STR tome (min 23 strength by level 21, requires Cleave, Great Cleave, Power Attack, and Improve Critical: Bludgeoning)

* Not iconic, since I want to do an epic TR followed by a heroic TR

* Reasonable self healing -- if we go for 15 paladin levels and get both Zeal and Cure Serious, that's probably enough right there, but ideally I'd have Empower Healing and hopefully Quicken to use for Cocoon, along with some healing amp

Things that would be nice to have, but which I can live without:

* 14 paladin levels for Zeal

* Haste Boost + Damage Boost

* 2 rogue levels and enough free APs to get tier 3 Thief Acrobatics (+15% attack speed) and the rogue version of Quick Strike rather than the monk version

* Solid defenses -- dodge, PRR, incorporeality, etc.

* Some sort of a ranged option

* Trap skills

The character:

I am pretty sure he's eaten +4 tomes to every stat by this point . . . the only one he might not have is Wisdom, but that would at least be a +3, and is unlikely to be relevant to these builds.

Pros:

Zeal

Should play mostly like a paladin

No yellow bar -- able to use light armor with no problems (I'm in love with the epic duelist's leathers for the dodge and PRR at L20)

Magical Training (SP + Echoes)

Extend

Trap skills

Damage Boost + Haste Boost

Self-cast Protection from Evil (command immunity) and Shield (missile immunity)

Defensive Stance for PRR and saves



Cons:

No self-cast Cure Serious or Deathward

No ranged option

Late bloomer -- no staff specialization till level 17, and even that taking it that early hurts trap skills a bit.

Should play mostly like a paladin (both a pro and a con -- I have always hated paladins but I want to give them another chance)

Pros:

Shadowfade for incorporeality

Choice of either Mountain Stance for crit enahncement and PRR or Wind Stance for doublestrike

Fists of Light

Various other nice monk things -- fist of iron, Every Light Casts a Shadow, etc.

Stunning Blow (DC will be fairly low, though, even with Divine Might)

Damage Boost + Haste Boost


Cons:

Dirty yellow bar -- have to deal with ki to actually play to it's potential, must stay centered and can't use light armor

No Zeal

No ranged option

No trap skills

Mediocre self-healing -- just one tier of human improved recovery and no Vigor of Life, few Lay on Hands, no Cure Serious, etc.

Pros:

Improved Evasion

Shadowfade for incorporeality

Choice of either Mountain Stance for crit enahncement and PRR or Wind Stance for doublestrike

Fists of Light

Various other nice monk things -- Fists of Iron, Every Light Casts a Shadow, etc.

Stunning Blow (DC will be fairly low, though, even with Divine Might)

Damage Boost + Haste Boost


Cons:

Dirty yellow bar -- have to deal with ki to actually play to it's potential, must stay centered and can't use light armor

No Zeal

No ranged option

No trap skills

Poor self-healing -- just one tier of human improved recovery and no Vigor of Life, few Lay on Hands, no Cure Moderate or Serious, etc.

Pros:

Good ranged option -- bow strength, rapid shot, precise shot, manyshot, IC: Ranged, Combat Archery, along with some minor imbues from Arcane Archer and extensions to sneak attack range from Deepwood Stalker and Mechanic

Damage Boost + Haste Boost

Reasonably good self-healing -- only Cure Moderate + Lesser Vigor and lots of positive and universal spellpower improvements from the ranger trees

Magical Training (SP + echoes)

Trap skills (not quite perfect, but good enough with gear)

Defensive Stance for PRR and saves

No yellow bar!

Fairly early bloomer -- Divine Might by level 5 and build will be nearly feature complete by L13, with both Staff Specialization and Manyshot


Cons:

No Zeal

No incorporeality or other nice monk features

No THF chain -- this is a significant loss

Lower strength to raise dex enough to qualify for Combat Archery


Note:

It would also be possible to attain the THF chain by losing IC:Ranged, Combat Archery, and Quicken. I decided if I go with this build at all, I'd rather not sacrifice that much of the ranged ability.

I did a staff paladin life once on my dwarf 14 pally/6 rogue. I hated it and performance was very underwhelming. it was probably just me and not allocating points properly but it was the longest climb to 20 I ever had. epics wasn't even a good idea for him.

Well . . . that's discouraging.

I don't have a great track record with paladins. The last time I tried to seriously play a paladin build, I wound up quitting the game for 2 years. Then I came back and decided to start a fresh new character on a new server to get my feet wet -- not remembering my previous mistake, I went with an evasion paladin. I liked it at first, but I hit level 12 and it just became such a slog that I wound up going back to my original server and my old characters.

But I love quarterstaffs and I've got a nice collection of them. With staff speciailzation now, I honestly feel like all you need is 5 rogue levels and you're ready to rock. I created an 8/8/4 barbarian/rogue/favored soul build just to get through a barbarian life (another class I've always hated) and I loved it so much that I've been happily playing it in epics. And the core of it, really, is just staff specialization + divine might. Which I figure I can get from any of these paladin builds.

It's kind of a travesty to call it a "paladin," but it ought to work okay, esp. w/extra procs from Smite Foe thanks to Quick Strike. :)

That would definitely work. I've thought about using that as a "TR platform" the way some people do with artificer or sorcerer platforms.

I just feel like paladin already lets me get most of what I was getting from the favored soul levels: Divine Might, PRR, access to Empower Heal, and some self healing. It seems like I should be able to find something better to do with the other levels. Although the loss of Ameliorating Strike and Smite Weakness will be unfortunate. Hm . . . now I'm considering it.

I'm currently leveling up a 10Rog/6Ranger/4Pal stick build, which might be somewhat similar to your build 4 during heroic levels.

Revising yours to say 9 Pal/5Rogue/6Ranger, or even 7Pal/7Rog/6Ranger (I think Paladin levels > Rogue levels for the purposes of TR) you would get manyshot directly from ranger levels, allowing you to take the thf line (I'd drop combat archery though, and probably even IPS, largely because I don't see the point of having that much dependency on dex for the build, which ultimately is a stick build and not a ranged one).

At level 11 currently on my build, my levels are 6Rog/4Pal/1Ranger so far (I had originally planned it to be 13Rog/4Pal/3Ranger, but then decided that I would switch some rogue levels to ranger to strengthen the ranged option) and in general just the lay on hands plus CSW pots are sufficient healing for elite heroics at level. I think from a self healing perspective the next few levels will be tougher, but I'm planning on having the bloody staff of shadow to help with that aspect.

If I was redoing this life, I'd change the levelling order a bit, but the key priorities are getting the first ranger level, pal 4, and rogue 5 as soon as possible. On say a 7/Pal/7Rog/6Ranger, the 6th and 7th rogue levels can be taken late without affecting performance, as can paladin 5-7 (unless you plan on using the sacred defender stance). This creates an early optimal levelling order something like:

1. Rog; 2 Pal; 3Rog; 4Pal; 5Ranger; 6Rog; 7Pal; 8Pal; 9Rog; 10-11Ranger; 12 Rogue; 13-15Ranger. This would get you to Rog5/Pal4/Ranger6 by level 15, with rogue 5 coming in at level 12 just in time for staff specialisation.

My key concern about this build is the loss of 25% incorp vs a monk splash. However, when I was considering build options, I saw no reasonable way of including monk levels whilst retaining the rogue stick fighting and paladin saves without dropping ranged. The best I could come up with was a 9monk/6pal/5rogue Elf split, that would get around the loss of bow strength by spec'ing into the elf racial tree for dex to bow damage, whilst continuing to be a str-based build for melee fighting. However, that was a huge compromise in my view as it was massively MAD.

If I was dropping the ranged requirement entirely, the logical build choice imo for what you're looking to do is 9Pal/6Mon/5Rogue. This split drops out purely from the class features - you want 5 rogue for the best stick fighting at the most efficient ap cost (5 Monk + 2 Rogue burns ap as you need 32-34 for henshin, and at least another 12 for thief acrobat, vs. just 35-38 if going the thief acrobat route). You want 6 Monk for 25% incorp. That leaves you 9 paladin levels. Even here, you could drop the paladin levels down a bit, but adding a couple of levels to rogue or monk don't do much for those aspects of the class and are largely an ease of play issue when levelling through to 20.

The biggest reason for the 11 paladin levels was to be able to cast Cure Moderate. With Empower Healing and sufficient positive spellpower and healing amp, it makes a pretty good emergency heal -- I use it fairly often at the moment on my 8 barbarian/8 rogue/4 favored soul build.

Unfortunately, paladins do not receive 3rd level spells until level 11. There's a big jump between Cure Light and Cure Moderate, and I'm not sure I'd want to rely solely on CLW and Cocoon. I guess I'll have lesser vigor and a couple of weak LOHs as well -- maybe that would be enough?

I do agree that 9/5/6 makes things a lot easier than 11/5/4 except for the self healing.

Yes, that's an interesting option. I looked at some elf builds, but I couldn't justify losing the human feat, healing amp, and skill points.
