I'm looking for a leveling up build to work with for a Warforged using two handed weapons.

I'm playing with some friends, so we're going to have a (more or less) balanced 6 player group going. I signed up for melee DPS, and Warforged look fun. We're going to have a Cleric and a Wizard (with repair spells), so self healing is nice, but low priority.

Most of the builds I've found tend towards endgame, while I really want something to work from while leveling up. I'm tentatively thinking of Fighter 12 / Monk 8 to get centered use of a big two handed weapon. Is there a build along those lines around somewhere? Or some other reasonable two handed fighter build for a Warforged?

While I can't call it "newbie-friendly" with a straight face, Cetus (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/433254-Cetus-The-Supreme-Bladeforged-Fighter) can be downgraded to a first-life WF; the main drawbacks are losing Reconstruct SLA and (possibly) Manyshot, depending on what tome(s) you have access to. But if you're running in a static group with an arcane caster, there's always someone around to keep you repaired.

I'd agree that Cetus is not even remotely a newbie friendly build. :)

Fighter/Monk/Paladin might be the way to go. Hmm...

I'm assuming you have a 32pt build.

You've got a couple of options open.

1. Do you want to be a pure fighter? (I would advise against it)

if not then:
2. 2 paladin = charisma to saves, this can be pretty nifty especially on a first life build.
3. 4 paladin = divine might, you can add your charisma score to your strength.
4. even though you won't be a 2wf character, you will find that your saves may not be terrible, so evasion could become useful.
5. Evasion can be gained from 2rogue (free class), 2monk (paid class), 9ranger (free class)

9ranger for evasion is too many levels spent on a w/f build that was going for 2 handed fighting.
2rogue is a nice option, the ability to spend full ranks in umd as you level will be very useful once you get to levels 14+
2monk is going to give you evasion & 2 feats, plus the kensai tree will give you the option to stay centered.

For a newer player who doesn't own the monk class, my preference would be a 12fighter/4monk/4paladin

Reasons:
12fighter =
bonus feats
power surge (+8str)

4 paladin =
charisma to saves,
divine might

4 rogue =
Evasion
Sneak Attack
Umd
Uncanny dodge (+1 dodge at character levels, 4/6/8/12/16/20 [6 extra dodge total])

Notes:
build has very poor ranged ability, it'll be noticeable if you play it through to epic elites.
build isn't very defensively orientated, though you could spend some ap in stalwart defender.
I put the 4th rogue level at 16 to help you get uncanny dodge sooner, I personally would take it at 20 to maximize skill points.

I'd agree that Cetus is not even remotely a newbie friendly build. :)
The toughest part is finding a way to squeeze in Manyshot (DEX 17) and Zen Archery (WIS 13) on a first-lifer if you don't have a bunch of tomes already. But with a few +2s, it is doable:

Feat-wise, I think I crammed in everything Cetus has except Completionist; I replaced it with GTHF. I would prefer to take Stunning Blow a lot sooner, but I'm not sure what I'm willing to delay to do so. Since OP is in a static group, I specced for some hate-tanking (defensive stance + Ki Shout).

Note: Divine Might won't work until you can Twist in Bane of Undeath; until then, drop the APs in KotC and spend them elsewhere.

This is a good thf build for a fighter, race is not important and works with any of them. Works well at attacking both lots of enemies or a single strong enemy and staying pure for ease of use for new player and assuming free to play. This is considered a traditional build for pnp.

assuming 28 point build and starting warforged:

Strength 18
Dexterity 14
Constitution 16
intelligence 8
wisdom 6
charisma 6

1 Power attack and weapon focus: slashing weapons
2 Combat Expertise
3Dodge
4Weapn Specialization: slashing weapons
5
6 mobility, spring attack
7
8 greater weapon focus: slashing weapons
9 whirlwind attack
10 cleave
11
12 great cleave, greater weapon specialization: slashing weapons
13
14 two-handed fighting
15 improved two-handed fighting
16superior weapon focus: slashing weapons
17
18 toughness, greater two-handed fighting
19
20 improved critical: slashing weapons
21 overwhelming critical
22
23
24 epic toughness
25
26 epic destiny: perfect two-handed fighting
27 blinding speed
28 epic destiny: elusive target

Just a note Combat Expertize requires 13 intelligence so you may want to delay that for later and push int in level ups to get it.

It would be more cost-effective to divert some initial build pts into INT; e.g., STR 17 / DEX 13 / CON 16 / INT 12 with a +1 INT tome to hit 13.

Not exactly a build, but a concept...

Ninja Spy gives you DEX to hit and damage at 3rd monk level with any weapon you are centered with and does (base weapon type) slash or pierce.

What I did (with a halfling) is I made a DEX with 2HF build...

However, for leveling, I went monk for level 1, fighter level 2, then straight monk to level 8 before going fighter for another 7 levels.

While you can't be centered with a 2HF (other than staff) until you have 8 fighter levels, what I did was get longsword proficiency at level 2 with the fighter level, and run long swords as a 2WF until I got to level 15 or so. The reason I did that was all the kensai feats I needed worked with longswords for leveling. So, I could use most of the kensai enhancements from level 2 to 15 or 16 when I got centered with all heavy blades. I could also--after level 4--use my much higher DEX as my to-hit and damage stat.

My basic build was starting with 13 STR (power attack, cleave, great cleave requirements), 14 CON, and everything else into DEX (to hit and damage plus AC) and WIS (for ki and for AC). You can use unarmed combat as well, but mostly I was spamming cleave, great cleave, Fists of Iron (which works with weapons) and whatever good attacks I was up to in the kensai tree.

I lesser reincarnated to smooth out my feats at 15 and now have all the nifty kensai attacks with heavy blades (2HF), a very nice AC, the 25% incorporeal clicky from ninja spy, ninja poison, etc. While I retained the 2WF feats (and switch back and forth from bastard swords/longswords to Cloudburst and an alchemical falchion for the ninja poison stacking), you could flip almost all of those out for 2HF feats, especially if you elect to go from, say, longswords to axes as your kensai focus.

I'm going to progress the rest of my levels with monk, but I could have just as well finished as fighter with this plan.

I use Wind stance almost exclusively for the boost in attack speed and chose the Master of Forms feat for the added oomph. (Will swap it out later when I get it from monk levels). I run in robes because of the AC bonuses from DEX, WIS and monk levels. I don't really use tactics because stunning fist (WIS based) requires unarmed (which I only use on oozes and gargoyles) and most of the others require STR which I gave up for more damage and AC.

For ranged work, I use a returning shuriken that picks up dex-to-hit and dex-to-damage plus ninja poison, but it's not exceptional. Mostly, I just move fast, mash the incorpreality clicky, (have a 20% perma blur item as well, 20+% dodge), jump in the middle of the fight and chain cleave/great cleave/fists of iron/A good death until it's over.

Good luck.
