View Full Version : Ranger levelling build

Ive been thinking ahead to my Ranger life on my main and have a question or two about it as I have no experience with the class.

Many of the Rangers I see in Heroic PuG groups tend to be squishy, non self-suff, walking Soulstones - not all, but most.

When I do my Ranger life I dont want to be "that Ranger" that always dies so Im hoping that someone with Ranger experience could give me a few pointers.

I did a search on Ranger builds and there are so many available that I just didnt know where to start, so I thought if I say what Im looking for then someone can say "you want xxx build"

Here goes.

Its going to be a Heroic levelling build - but I want to retain the essence of being a Ranger if possible, after all it'll probably be the only Ranger life I do.

Self sufficiency would be nice
I dont want to be a constant kiter
Not squishy
A bit of meleeing
I want to be useful/ hold my own in Heroic Elite PuGs

What I have that helps you to help me

Past Lives - 3Sorc, 2Wiz, 2FvS, 1Clr, 1Brb, 1Drd (possibly 1Ftr if I squeeze it in first)

+4s across the board plus a couple of 5s

Many named Heroic bows (Ive been collecting them along the way)

Plus all the other gadgets and gizzits a multi-life alt has.

I have all races and classes available.

So to coin a phrase - "I have all the gear, but no idea(r)"

If anyone could spare a few minutes to give me a few ideas it would be much appreciated

I dont mind splashing if it will improve the build

Splash of fighter L2 will give you the extra haste boost and feats, and for heroic the khopesh will be a nice boost to your TWF dps. If you take your two fighter levels early, like L2 and 3 (L1 for ranger skill points) you won't be as squishy early on, but you will push evasion back.

I'd use your bow only situationally when it makes sense rather than run around pew-pewing full time. At higher levels your manyshot will be very good and depending on your gear and what enhancements you take you could switch to the bow more often. Only kite if necessary, and then if you have to, kite TOWARD your melees so they don't have to chase the mobs to get aggro back. Sometimes its better to hold in place even if you are taking some damage so the melees can actually hit the mob.

Manyshot+IPS will probably gain you some aggro so be ready for it.

Until you get CSW your self-sufficency will only be marginal (so L15-17 depending on if you splashed).

Sorry if this wasn't helpful, you may have already known all this as it sounds like you are more experienced than I am. I do play rangers (and *gasp* paladins) though so if I can think of anything else I'll let you know. At least I bumped your post. :)

Mine is currently 14/1/1 ranger/fighter/rogue and he is a blast to level. He self-heals, does traps, has good UMD, and I can't remember the last time he had to drop his bow and switch to his melee weapons.

Go arcane archer and get Paralyzing Arrows as soon as you can. There are very few non-boss things you won't be able to paralyze in heroic content. DPS includes crowd control, and paralyzing mobs is great crowd control.

Get a ghostly item (I have the Cloak of Invisibility from Tempest Spine), a blurry item (I have Bracers of Wind), and boost your Dodge bonus. Boost your reflex save (I have the Parasitic Breastplate from In the Flesh, which gives +10 to reflex saves) and you can ignore quite a bit of incoming spell damage. On the rare occasions you get hit, you can heal yourself.

Human 18/1/1 (ranger/rogue/fighter). May not be the best EE build but is still viable there. Great for leveling with both UMD and blue-bar hjeals, trap skills, and over-all good DPS.

Based off a Khopesh build that switching to CiTW weapons after level 23. if you don't have Khopesh take IC: Ranged and PBS earlier. Bows are kinda terrible in Heroic so it doesn't really matter.

Same feat setup can be used for a mostly Tempest or mostly AA with just an ENH reset.

1: Dodge
3: Cleave
6: Great Cleave
9: IC: Slashing (swap later for IC: ranged)
12: Khopesh (swap later for Precision)
15: Maximize
18: Quicken

Human: Power Attack
Fighter: IC: Piercing

21: Ovewhelming Crit
24: Point blank shot
26 (ED): Toughness
27: Epic Toughness
28 (ED): Perfect TWFing

Since you need mostly ranger I'd suggest for pew pew 12 ranger / 6 monk / 2 whatever

ranger / AA

many shot
paralyzing arrows
whistler (dances them)

Seriously think about 6 monk for

10k stars (need decent wis though)
3 feats (1 being 10k)

Bows suck in Heroic. You need the broken synergies of the EDs and the better bows (Pinion) for it really to be good.

Paralyzing arrows? Since when is Crowd Control needed AT ALL in heroics?

Go TWFing melee and pretend you're a fighter. With 100% off-hand and 30% haste boost you're fine.

I have sooo many archers now and the rogue splash has always been the toon I found the most versatile.

The blur and invisibility items are a fun addition for sure BUT only if you plan on letting creatures get that close .... I choose to stay far enough away that mobs are the casters and tanks problem BUT close enough for The added die of PBS - CA - and any DWS abilities

I would use those blur / invis items all the time but unfortunately there is so much other stuff to slot it becomes difficult to decide.

Pure ranger is also a very good option

14 ranger - 2 monk - 4 fighter is fun

Alot of the options I would give you would give you unfortunately won't help you obtaining the past life requirement.

Have fun with your build

I would rather punch myself in the face all day than put the bow down !

I know I had quite a bit of fun watching enemies drop in one or two shots when I was around lvl5-6. Now I have a lvl17/1 ranger/rouge and it's near impossible to solo the relatively level appropriate FTP quests on normal. Best to have a barb or cleric hireling to help out, situation dependent of course.

For my ranger life I went pure dex-based ranger and went to town with the tempest tree. Tempest is VERY good in heroics. In epics though, I respecced for ranged, and that's fun too. Of course I got my free Pinion from Turbine, too, and that helped quite a bit.

One of the things I'd like to point out is that I took quicken and empower healing for my cure spells. Of course, it helps to carry lots of healing potions since the ranger sp bar is a bit small.

I'd rather be effective in heroics, we all have our priorities.

Since the enhancement pass, I really don't see how you could be an arcane archer and not be extremely effective in heroic content. Are you leaving your bow on the ship?

I wonder if you could advise what class you take first, and when you would swap to each of the others. I've been away from the game several years and have just returned, so any advice is great - thanks.

He took the rogue level first (for the most skill points), and the fighter level at 6th (I think), just because I didn't think it was that important when he took it.
