View Full Version : Returning Player - Basic HEROIC Sorcerer for Levels 16-20

Howdy all. I'm returning to DDO for the first time in a couple of years. There have been a lot of changes in that time -- when I was last playing, MOTU didn't exist, there were no epic levels, no enhancement revision, etc.

I logged in this morning to check, and my main character is currently a level 16 pure warforged sorcerer on its 3rd life. (Past lives rogue and wizard.) But of course I have a free respec available.

My plan is to lesser reincarnate to a solid build for levels 16-20. I might then try some of the new epic content briefly, but I mostly intend to TR soon after hitting 20 and start over as a new class. I always loved the lower level quests in DDO, and it's mostly my nostalgia for those quests that is bringing me back now. The last thing I want to do is start on the new epic grind and get burned out again.

The problem is that it's hard right now to find sorcerer builds that take into account the new mechanics and enhancements, but which are focused on playability in the heroic levels (and especially from 16-20). It seems like everything right now is about "Shiradi", which from my understanding is an epic destiny that doesn't apply in the heroic levels.

Here's what I'm thinking -- I'm essentially locked into 16+ sorcerer levels, since that's where I'm at right now. I've always wanted to do a 2 paladin splash for the saves. My original plan, two years ago, had been for this life to be an earth savant, so there's some equipment socked away for that, which I'd prefer to stick with unless it's horribly gimped. I don't care if my build is sub optimal, especially for epic content, but I don't want to struggle too much to get these 4 levels, so I that I can get on with the TR life and low level content I'm really looking forward to.

So what follows is what I think is a pretty solid 18/2 sorc/paladin earth savant (with a minor dip into fire). Please let me know if this looks playable (given that I no longer really understand a lot of the mechanics). Or if anyone can suggest a better build for these last 4 heroic levels -- ideally one that either works with my existing earth-focused gear or which is not gear dependent -- please link me!

Looks ok but I would skip the pally levels if you are just going for heroic.

Toughness is not very good any more only 30 hp.

I would go air or ice from 16 to 20.

Last time I leveled up my sorc I took air for wind dance and concentrated on necro wail kikks azz in heroic.

Oh man, good call on the toughness. Didn't quite make the connection that it was no longer a prerequisite for a bunch of useful enhancements.

Although . . . I'm not really sure what else to put there. I feel weird even taking mental toughness, which always seemed like a waste to me. The lack of feat prerequisites for enhancements/prestiges definitely gives a lot more feat freedom than we used to have. Guess I could take spell penetration, GSF:Conj/Evo, or Spell Focus: Necro.

Is wail actually usable in elite heroics now on a sorcerer with only one wizard past life? I remember it being basically not worth it unless you could take 2 spell penetrations, 2 spell focuses, and a couple of spell pen enhancements.
