View Full Version : Magister questions

I have a few questions about aspects of the Magister destiny which are not made clear from the Wiki/Game description. Hopefully someone more experience than me can answer:

1. Does the "stacking" energy resistance provided by Sigil of Energy Negation and Variable Resistance mean it stacks with ordinary sources of energy resistance such as items or the Archmage Abjuration SLA?

2. Spell School Augmentation states "Chosen school spells have [5/10/15]% chance to reduce target <save depending on school> by 10". Is this applied before or after the save roll for the spell which actually triggers the effect? My guess is after, in that it won't make the triggering spell any more powerful but will reduce save DCs for subsequent spells from the same school.

3. Nullmagic Strike states "Offensive spells you cast, melee and ranged attacks have a [5/10/15]% chance to subject the target to a Dispel Magic effect". Does this mean the roll is made per-cast, or per damage effect? Does a spell which does damage in several increments like Force Missiles have a higher chance to trigger the effect?

4. Grand Summoner: "Summons gain +4 to all ability scores". Does this mean all summons, including summoned monsters, PM skeletons etc, or just the epic monsters summoned with its Call Kindred Being pre-requisite?

After the save roll. I can only tell it regarding Enchantment: if a mob saves against a charm/dance/hold it's more likely that the same mob doesn't succeed its save roll when you cast the spell a second time.

Summons only (Summon Monster I-IX, Summon Nature's Ally I-IX, Call Kindred Being, Summon Dryad Elder - I don't know if it affects summons from clickies too, like the Shard of Xoriat). Pets (Wolf, Dog, Skeleton), Hires and charmed Mobs won't be affected.

1 - yes
2 - i think its after, so you can soften them up with an SLA 1st (eg. hypno for its own debuff then this one on top) then fire the more powerful spell.
3 - Not sure, but multi-projectile spells like magic missle work like that for the shiradi abilities so it's probably a reasonable assumption that this would work the same way
4 - Works the same (and stacks with) augment summoning feat as well as the druid passive past lives.. stack all of them together & your summons, charmed thingies, pets & hirelings could have up to +14 to all stats, increased fortification etc.

I'm pretty sure, that it doesn't affect Hires, Pets or charmed Mobs but Summons only. I cannot verify it atm as I'm Level 9 again and no EDs available. If someone could help (summoning a Hire with active and no active Magister, HP numbers should confirm if yes or no) it would be great :)

I am a sorceress, and I maxed out Draconic Incarnation, and had switched to Magister. I have earned 8 points which I can spend in this tree. As far as I can tell, I should be able to pick a spell school specialist in tier 2 after I spend 4 points, but none of them are "choseable". I'd like to do necromancy, as I'm a drow. I have spell focus evocation under my enhancements from pre-epic levels. What am I missing? I don't understand why I can't at least pick evocation. One of my friends said I need to finish one of the enhancement areas, but I maxed out the fire sorceress and have all of the top spells in that tree.

Thanks for any help.

You need to have a Spell Focus feat, and can only pick it for a school for which you have the matching feat.

Note that "Precise casting" from Draconic Incarnation has the same prerequisiste, although being limited to only Evocation or Conjuration.
