Seems you do not know much about servers. Turning on the lights is not taking much time, but bringing the server into a save state and then restarting all the functions is. One hour is very fast and will be something to applaude Turbine for, not criticise.

My day starts off with an ice storm and the roads are a frictionless sheet of un-mu. (Sort of a double anti-friction statement.)

That means I drive kids to school because they cannot drive on this un-mu. F = mu * R is unkind to young drivers.

Then the server I want to play on is down while I wait to take kids to school.

Come home, making it up the un-mu surface of my hill, and decide I will play on Thelanis. Get the message the server is coming down in 15 minutes.

El bummer.

Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket today... Either my luck is due to change, or else it will be like all the other lottery tickets I have purchased.

Yeah, I will applaud you the first time you reboot a chrashed database server (and what else is the DDO game server, if not a big database and some scripts) w/o first bringing the database server into "safe" state and succeeding. Have fun finding all the loose ends and damaged pointers and sorting out all that went amiss.

There are reasons why database servers NEVER should go down chrashing if possible. And turning down safely and restarting safely a database server takes time.

I sometimes wondered as well... Maybe M$ $QL? ;)

But speaking of up- and downtimes, I had been working with *S400 and *racle databases. With both database systems I had unexpected downtimes. Checking the database integrity was the most time consuming process on the start-up, depending on the size of the libraries. I can only guess for the size of DDO databases, but 45 minutes to one hour sounds about right, if they do a complete checkup on start up.

People need to calm down. This stuff happens. The devs are working hard to fix the issue. It's rough that this happened on a Friday, but it happened. You guys are making it seem like it's the end of the world.

Servers are not like desktops. It's not as easy as hitting a button. Just be patient and go play another game for a few hours. It'll give you a break from all those Epic TRs. I'm on 12, and I'm already feeling the grind pretty hardcore.

I love forum judgment. People get upset when others criticize Turbine. Why does anyone care what anyone says to Turbine in the forums. It's just crack babies without their fix getting fussy. I don't even pay mind to what they write and I'm sure neither does Turbine.

But make sure we keep sticking up for those "hard working" devs.

Heh. Not that simple.

I've seen a HP-UX server take 2 hours just to get back to command prompt, on a "clean" reboot. Mind you, with the amount of FWD SCSI cabling in there and all the various disk arrays, off old HP-PB buses, not all that surprising... it was an old (90s) Nova chassis, could've been an I30.

Mind you, those things were set up so that they DID usually bring the database back up in an usable state after a crash too, automatically... just took a bit of time. Then again, the database setup was designed for that, at the expense of some speed in normal operation.

All the jesting aside, as someone who has used computers connected to servers in my line of work for many years every once in a while they go down at unexpected times (although it often seems to be just before deadlines) and the IT department can't really say when they will be back up until a few minutes before they are back up. Sometimes they can tell you it won't be before XXX time and when they do so expect it to really be even longer.

Players aren't high enough on the totem pole to receive reasons. We're just barely high enough to receive actual communication and confirmation that there is an issue to begin with. Reasons and timeframes are for people higher up than those that are doing the communicating. This is the way of business for some reason.

I agree with this, whenever something like that happens, it never is a good sign. It shows that they don't know what is wrong, or how long it'll take to fix it. I can understand that rebooting and fixing a server isn't easy, but seriously.. they should NOT give an estimated time, especially only one hour, if it in fact takes more than 3 hours to fix. It restarted just under 2 hours ago, and it is still not fixed...

And seriously.. a reboot in the MIDDLE of the day? I don't know about everyone, but seeing as the main server is in Eastern (-5 GMT) as in eastern U.S. and since the majority (not saying all) play during the daytime for U.S... this is like a slap in the face.

Sure, kids are in school on Friday, but I believe my sister said that her school was having a half day, seeing as it's the last day before Christmas break. And I know a lot of adults who play the game and who are off on Fridays...

I don't see why they couldn't have done a fix last night, or early this morning, whenever no one was on much.

that sir, is a classic line :D I must remember that.

Sometimes they can tell you it won't be before XXX time and when they do so expect it to really be even longer.

accidents happen and unexpected things happen in IT just as in any other profession. Difference is, from the time it goes down the IT bees have to work out WHY it went down, not just how to get it back up and running. Without fixing the issue there's nothing to stop it from happening again.

This can be tough to put a timeframe on with a standalone PC now try it with multiple servers running in parallel and interacting with multiple network switches and load balancers etc.

thing is, seeing as this is a business I would expect that at least some of the revenue coming in would have been earmarked for server maintenance / high availability / distributed hosting and/or live content mirroring. The failures are happening a little too frequently (if Turbine have a "5 9s" SLA with their host, I'd be having a few words with the account manager at this stage) though which strikes me as there likely being a single point of failure somewhere long the line that really needs to be addressed. Pity we have no such 5 9s SLA as part of our subscription but then again , that's standard for any game.

I think that one of the major concerns that seems to be consistently expressed is that the lack of a timeline is a source of frustration. If at 11:30 I try and log in, and the staff indicates it will be about an hour, I'll check back in about an hour. Then when it's 45 minutes after the 1 hour advised time, there is just an ambiguous answer as to when the game will be available. That doesn't help me know when I should try back. Should I continue to sit and refresh the thread to know when it's up. Should I go and do something else for another hour and come back?

We all understand that things happen, and that there are times when the unexpected occurs. I don't think it's unreasonable for the players to be able to have a timeline as to when the game is available. Communication without clarity isn't helpful.

I half agree with you on this. I think the mistake was putting a 1 hour timeframe on it at the start. No expected duration should have been given until an expected duration was known. I'd prefer a "we're having trouble here, we'll get back to you with an estimated service window length" than a

"this will only take a minute."

player checks after a minute

"did I say a minute . I meant an hour."

player checks after an hour

" An hour has gone already? just a little longer."

player repeatedly checks at each deadline

" Two days? really? doesn't time fly, truth is, we dont know how long. at this stage its a toss up between restore to last known good or keep trying to fix, the former loses information the latter may take longer".

player posts nasty stuff online about developers and acts as if the world has ended and that this is the greatest betrayal EVARRRRR!

it happens. its a game. I just feel bad for the poor techies who are probably rushing around like headless chickens trying to work out whats wrong and why their original fix hasn't worked at this stage.

Was reading the facebook page, and someone on there said they should over-estimate the time that servers will be down. I agree with this, it's better to over-estimate and have the servers back up and running early, or on time as the case may be (most times) rather than under-estimating (one hour) and still haven't gotten it fixed two hours later. At this rate, and with the open ended time... it may not be up for another two hours yet. I will be highly surprised if they manage to bring it back up within 45 minutes. (3 hour mark)

If they were to over-estimate the times, I think that alone would solve a lot of the frustration. I'm frustrated because I've nothing to do, was playing DDO and randomly get told within 15 minutes the servers are shut down, I close the game and check back, and it says ONE hour. I check back an hour later.. still not done.. I check back 30 minutes later... still not done... it's past 2 hours now.

If they restore to the last known good - well... they'll have to go back a LONG ways for that...

Seems to me that every time they try to fix something, 3 more problems pop up.

I wasn't have much trouble before the maintenance and patch recently, afterwards, my lag doubled.. I'd randomly freeze up when no one else was on the internet at my house... which only EVER happens whenever everyone is home and online. I wonder how bad my lag will be after this maintenance...

" Two days? really? doesn't time fly, truth is, we dont know how long. at this stage its a toss up between restore to last known good or keep trying to fix, the former loses information the latter may take longer".

player posts nasty stuff online about developers and acts as if the world has ended and that this is the greatest betrayal EVARRRRR!

it happens. its a game. I just feel bad for the poor techies who are probably rushing around like headless chickens trying to work out whats wrong and why their original fix hasn't worked at this stage.

why would you feel bad? that is the job :p

I check back 30 minutes later... still not done... it's past 2 hours now.

over estimating is silly, a simple it could take x amount of time longer than we thought would work. and then if it goes over that another estimate would suffice..otherwise i'm left to check back every 10-15 minutes because it must be back soon!!!

Thats what they do sometimes, but not always.. and that's just as frustrating. No matter what, better to over-estimate than to under-estimate.. and why bother checking back 10-15 minutes... better off to check back every 30 minutes or every hour.

This is unfortunate but I'm in the software development industry and I work on complex client/server architectures. Servers going BOOM! are one of your worst nightmares. If it is a piece of hardware you rapidly learn that there are minor incompatibilities between hardware that should just work when you replace it. You need to make sure that no data has been corrupted, you need to check that various systems are still communicating with each other...

Rather just let Turbine take their time otherwise we could be sitting with an even bigger nightmare further down the line.

It ucks for us players, for the ops team and developers it is a frikking nightmare.

Would agree, I can understand that issues happen - but really, they could do something to make up for it. It's one thing if they take the servers down ONCE per MONTH... but once per week?

Only game I know of that had a weekly maintenance was World of Warcraft, and in my opinion, WoW was 10x better than DDO... only reason I'm playing DDO is because can no longer afford WoW.. sadly..

But still, they should offer SOMETHING to make up for the downtime and the waiting..

Better than sitting at the computer hitting refresh on forums and restarting the client every 15 minutes..

Also, it doesn't mean its coming back soon, it means they don't know what the real problem is, or how to fix it and are trying to figure it out... meaning it could take hours. Speaking of which.. looking at 1 hours 40 minutes PAST the before said time..

Try reading the agreement you clicked ok on. Yes they are down a lot it seems, but when you consider they are usually on 24/7/365 its a pretty small fraction of time they are down. This game is getting very old, very complex and very intertwined. I hate the down time when I'm free to play but it's going to happen. If you can't live with it you need to find another, newer game that probably will have problems of its own. Good luck.

Boy, thank good that no one else knows about it, or we'll go down a lot more often until we code a catch for that little loop hole. 3 hours, albeit feels like 5 hours. 3 hours are too much, though.

That´s why good IT support always has a fail-safe necromancer at hand for any hamsters that die to make them work again. :)

yes 3 hours is much to long, when you look though the code yourself it might take 3 hours amongst all the swimming letters, numbers, and symbols. the 3 hours might seem too short when its 450 lines long. anyways the point was to give us more info then it will be up soon {ish} and we are starting the servers.

Hardware dies on occasion. In these times where virtualization is the standard (And I'm one of the few dinosaurs out there who hats the fact that people think that virtual servers are the be-all and end-all (But that is a topic for another rant.)) a single RAID controller falling over can bring everything down. And it does happen. Then you replace the bloody thing with the latest model and make (because they have stopped making the original and the documentation says they are 100% replaceable) but the new one needs V4.543C of the firmware but the old one had V4.543A but the new version doesn't quite play the same with the SAN and you find yourself scouring the net for a work-around while some f'ing suit is sending abusive emails about downtime costing salaries and heads rolling and the only thing you can find via Google is one person who had the same problem posted on the hardware manufacturers forums four months ago but nobody replied to him...

Welcome to reality.

No need to go that far... a poor cheap SUN V880 with a Dual Channel Fiber Channel Controller board gone wonky. All the 12 73Gb 15K SCSI HDDs ended up containing a lot of gibberish.
Bringing the beast back up lead to some Interesting Overtime Pay. ( Added difficulty : no recent [ less than 2 year old ] backup; added Twist : 1 Sybase server with important stuff that had to be recovered somehow ] )

Hardware failures can be extremely fun.

Only one server? Really, Cordovan, you must be kidding! First we had 5/8 servers down, now we have 7/8 down, after a complete closure of 3 hours?!

Kill your necromancer and buy a new one. The hamster zombies do not work.

Yupper, the curse of the cannith, those crafters cant leave well enough alone! I heard they tried to put a shard of masterful craftsmanship on the server and then realized the server is now bound to character.

Well met.
Maybe this is why I am more tolerant then some people here. I started playing D&D in 1978 and became the DM of my own campaign in 1979. It ran very successfully till 2011 when I was forced to move to a new location 700 miles away. It seems that perhaps it was time to stop for the day we were to play the last session that would end the campaign one of my friends that had played the entire time had a stroke and has been physically unable to talk and is quadriplegic, (Here he was Falonn of the guild: The Order, and many others) a few weeks later another died from a ruptured liver (here he was Ckain, lastly of The Order of the Silver Dragons), the other four players are still alive and well as am I but it seems it was time for the campaign to end.
Anyway to get back to my point (please forgive my long winded reminiscing) I have spent so many hours preparing the quests for the few hours we actually got to play that there is no comparison. I estimate we spent thousands of hours playing and I probably spent double that in preparation. The reward for patience is Patience. Things are up now so fare ye well.

I get that it has to go down for maintenance, i even get that they need to restart them. I just wish it would come back up now, its been well over 5 hours, with that much downtime not planned, can we at least get a good detailed message as whats wrong and when everything MIGHT be back up? so give us more then a hardware issue and we are restarting everything... like it will be 3 more hours, and one of the macros contained inside the log in program became corrupted and has been fixed... this kind of message would be helpful and maybe reduce the flak for all this downtime... it makes you look like you have no idea when it will be fixed and your a bunch of monkeys bashing on frames...lol

to all of us waiting may our time go by fast.

Yes indeed some of us are vip which means right now ur holding my money above my head saying"u can get it nah nah nah nah nah " I get really upset when people play wit my money an update as to when u will fix this will be appreciated

I just noticed that the double-XP-from-Daily-Dice is not working anymore.

I'm not a VIP, but don't they have something special currently, too? Might want to check that, as well.

EDIT: It's fine on Orien, but wasn't on Cannith.
EDIT 2: Also fine on Wayfinder. Maybe I just got on the one server a little too quickly?

lol that sounds like you have sometype of related issue in your life. however every thing you have ranted on is basically an excuse. IT does not have the sole job of fixing problems as they arise. Optamalily there job is to keep the game up and running. That entails knowing if hardware/softwars is obsolete and no longer compatible before it breaks and replacing what is needed.
If management does not support IT to get the proper parts then whether it is IT or management like i said it is there mistake and could have been avoided.
