View Full Version : Thoughts on this arti build?

Trying to decide between druid and arti for next life, so thinking up an arti build which will be good for leveling. I vaguely care about epics, but honestly not too much. And I know diddly about artificers, but hey only 2 more lives to go to completionist. I also looked over the Dubbel O'Seven build for ideas, and from there got the idea of a mixed ranged/caster idea.

Was thinking 18/2 artificer/rogue (or monk?) in part because I've found evasion very nice on a trapper. Alot of the boxes seem to be on the other side of a trap.

Stats: 8/16/18/18/6/6

Feats I was looking at (in no particular order):
1 Insightful reflexes
2 Point blank shot
3 Precise shot
4 Improved precise shot
5 Rapid shot
6 SF: Evo
7 PL:Wiz
8 Empower
9 Quicken
10 Maximize
11 IC: Ranged

* Do I need quicken for epic levels?

* Is the idea of a mixed ranged/caster a bad idea?

* Does this build sound fun for heroic leveling? I know you can't speak to fun quotient, but will the build suck? That'd influence my idea of fun.

Class thoughts:

Rogue has obvious sneak attack benefits, but not like I need points for trapping skills.

Monk provides no centering, but 2 feats. This would allow me to pick up precision and toughness. I'm not convinced toughness is required any more, so could take dodge. I've taken toughness every life for so long however it feels weird not to have it. The SA damage is a bit expensive though.

Going pure would allow me to have better spells earlier, and I wonder if the metamagic feats I took are kinda pointless without higher arti levels. I'd have only 2 level 6 spells at 18.

Gear thoughts:
Rune arms: I have a Hand of the tombs, lucid dreams and arcing sky. Maybe animus too. Maybe even a tira's splendor. I figure I can get by with whatever I find? Or is there something which should be farmed? I have no access to corruption of nature, as I think it is BTCoA?

Docents: Figure the blademark docent at 5, and unsupressed quiforged at 18. Between go giantdraft/black? Nightforge docent? First WF, so new to this.

Repeaters: Doublecross/silver slinger seem good for 16+. Until then crafted screaming of bleed? ____ burst of bleeding?

I would be interested in any and all constructive thoughts on build
I'll be drawing up test build shortly, but didn't want to muddy the waters, so as to speak in the 1st post when I don't even know exactly what I'm looking for.

Mostly it depends on play style and what you want to accomplish in the game as an arty.

In my opinion I would make a pure arty for capstone and stronger arty dog. I feel that evasion is not needed. You can get to the other side of the trap and disarm the box without evasion by using timing, ingenuity, and sometimes gear. But that is my opinion based on my play style. I also take Construct Essence and pump up repair skill.

For the casting part I usually only take these feats; maximise, spell focus evocation, quicken, and/or spell penitration.

I feel these are the best rune arms; Hand of Tombs for fire, Corruption of Nature for acid, Anarchic Device for force, Toven's Hammer for electric, and Chill of Winter for cold.

The feats depend on play style as well, trapper, melee or caster. However, I always take Augmented Summoning with any of these builds for my arty dog and hires.

There are too many repeaters to list. However, I like Hobble's Crossbow for lowbie, always have a banisher (ouitsiders) and smitter (constructs) in my bag, and use the Needle, Quill Singer at the end.

I like to use parlayzing collars and the Ancient Gemstone on my dog. I have a level 24 paralyzing collar that still works at end game.

My last point is don't worry about your wis and spot being low. You will do a better job of finding traps with search (high INT).

Just sharing my opinion based on my play style.

I max the following skills, Jump, Repair, Spellcraft, UMD, aside from the traps stuff.

As a note, over the weekend I went with the build I posted above, with the exception of moving up quicken and moving back SF:Evo.

Turned out quite nicely. It's not optimal, but very survivable, and puts out nice DPS.

I'm at level 17 (3.45M) so didn't make 20 yet, but putting in most of a weekend I got quite far. Besides, with U20 tomorrow, I cut back what I need to cap by a fair bit.
