View Full Version : Dwarven Cleaving Defender

This build takes advantage of the fact that Dwarven Axes are considered 2h weapons for the purpose of THF ITHF and GTHF's splash damage bonus, even when using a shield (although not dual wielding).

It incorporates shield mastery/greater shield mastery for extra tankage, and it includes improved shield bash (1 extra feat) for the freebie shield bashes every 6 seconds.

I skipped out on Combat Expertise as while this build should(?) be able to tank with Power Attack will be on at all times to help gather threat along with greater cleave and the splash damage.

Hopefully with hate generation from stalwart defender, the glancing blows and cleaves will be enough to keep things off my caster friends.

I also was able to fit in Bullheaded and Iron will for +3 to Will Saves (stacked with Dwarven spell resistance) and +2 on intimidate rolls.

I maxed Intimidate (of course) and Jump (no relying on casters for jump spell).

http://www.ddochargen.com/home.aspx?build=56056

Things that could be changed.

I went 14 INT mostly for RP reasons, I wanted my dwarf to be able to be able to tell a story (haggle) despite his stenchy beard and low Cha score. Going down to 12 int looses you the skill point needed for better vendor prices.

It's a 32 point build. So, if you're running 28 points you'd need to drop haggle and perhaps 2 points from Dex(12 to 10) or Wis (10 to 8). AC will come from tower shields and heavy armor anyway. Dex bonuses won't ever be the major source (this wrong?). I only went with 12 dex to avoid having to take any Dex gear to get the minimum +1 or +2 AC bonus left behind from Tower Shields / Heavy Armor (i didn't take tower/armor mastery enhs). I suppose you could drop 2 points from Wis and Int to get a better Dex score as well (and then take those armor/shield bonus enhs).

You could also swap haggle for something else, but due to 6 Cha Dump you can pretty much forget a useful UMD score.

As for feats, I suppose Bullheaded and Iron Will could be swapped out, but you're going to loose some points in Will Saves which means you'll be CCed more easily (noooo not the tank!) This leaves 3 optional feats including Shield Bash, perhaps Combat Expertise could be fit in somewhere here. I also wasn't able to find "Epic Toughness" on the DDO Character Generator, but if it's in game, and you pump Con up to 21 (instead of str to 19) you could also take. Keep in mind to take on Combat Expertise you'll need 14 Int.

Stats could also be changed, some Con into Str or vice-versa, or take a +3 tome. I balanced it between them as this is a tank char and he needs the extra HP. It also raises his Fortitude score while re-gaining damage from enhs power attack and feats.

As for gear, TANK gear all the way. DR on shield, as much AC/Saves/DR/Fortification etc.. as possible.

Anyway, I'm somewhat new to DDO. I've followed others builds until now (Unbongwah) but I thought this would be a fun build to play and am considering it as a 2nd life (after a 20 barb, swapping toughness for barb feat) to make a Stalwart Defender of the Wild.

Normally I don't bother with the save-boosting feats - not because saves don't matter, but because they don't provide a big enough bonus, IMHO - but if you're really trying to bump them up, then you may want to consider also adding Luck of Heroes, Discipline, Lightning Reflexes, and Bulwark of Defense. But honestly, if you want good saves on a tank, you should be looking at paladins, IMHO.

Points taken.

There really wasn't a whole-lot to choose from on the last levels of fighter. I could take stunning blow/improved sunder, and I'll explain why.

I decided that instead of pumping con, i'd take a +3 con tomb for Epic Toughness and lvl STR (16+5=21) and take a +2 str tomb (21+2=23) for overwhelming crit.

Since my STR will be 24 or 26 (depending on Enhs), I could take improved sunder/stunning blow.

Gives me something to do between cleaves, sunder might help my DPS/Rogue/Ranger team-mates during boss fights too?

Going to go ahead and get started making this guy. Since nobody pointed out any major errors/flaws, I guess it's not too bad of a build.

You can see my take on a dwarven pure ftr tank here (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/420963-Dwarven-Fighter-Build-Looking-for-suggestions?p=5047988&viewfull=1#post5047988). Basic concept is the same; what differs are the base stats, optional feats, etc. I've also got a dwarf ftr 12 / pal 6 / monk 2 build I'm leveling (currently 17), which I'm hoping will see a nice buff after the enh overhaul is finished (knock on wood).

I would dump the imp weap foc and sup weap foc feats, really not needed, as well as the saves feats. You can never run out of good feats as a fighter. Consider these instead:
dodge
stunning blow
combat expertise (just to get imp trip)
imp trip
quickdraw (reduces delays when using boosts)
overwhelming critical
mobility
imp sunder

Or even consider bow feats. I just finished a 12rng/8ftr life and I have to say, I already miss many shot and bow str. But yeah, saves are nice to have, so you could do worse.

Personally I wouldn't bother with 18 con, it's over kill IMO, 16 should be good enough. Same for 14 int. 12 int is more than ample, and assuming you can get +3 or +4 tomes by higher levels even 10 int is fine. If you want it for flavor that's fine, personally if I want to RP I table top, there is no real RP online anyway IMO.

I still haven't made this toon, but I'm thinking I'll take Bulwark of Defense.
http://ddowiki.com/page/Bulwark_of_Defense
As it applies to "Stalwart Defender" stance, which I'll mostly always have on with Power Attack at the same time.

I'm going to take the said advice and drop the improved/superior weapon focus feats. I'm thinking Fighters have nice enough BAB as it is, and the Dwarf Enhs will give plenty of a bonus as is.

nice idea, be aware though that the enhancement pass will shake thinks up big time, races and classes might change a fair bit.
if you have access, check it out.

on live its hard to go wrong with a dwarven tank :)
2hf feats also work on cleaves, and works with 2handed axes just in case the barb stole agro and you just got turned into a random dps guy.
i prefer power attack over combat expertise because keeping agro of party members still means you need to do some damage for it to be amplified by hate gear and class enhancements.
all combat expertise (needing int 13 not 14) does at the moment is give access to:
10% AC nice but not that great in higher lv content
20 prr by twisting in improved combat expertise from LD, the difference between 180 prr and 200 prr is a mere 2% dr, not realy worth the trade of.
gives access to improved trip (+4 dc to trip), in higher lv content you wont be able to make the dc even with trip gear, your str is far to low.

i would worry more about reflex saves then will saves, simple buff spells should keep you safe.
Dwarfs gain racial saves bonus, wich can be raised by enhancements too.
Skills:
carry clickies to increase jump, its a waste of points, remember that jump cuts of at 40 and clickies of jumping +30 are easely gained.
put points into balance, getting up from being tripped etc is hard in platemail and tower shield is very hard.
you cant maintain agro on your back, if your lucky the party cleared the room and moved on, if unlucky, you get killed slowly.
(put a point into tumble, too much fun not to have XD)

since defenders and dwarfs can increase their maximum dex bonus to armor class, dodge, mobility and spring attack help with the max dex bonus/dodging attacks too. Dumping dex would't be my first option... a +10 dex mod isn't too hard to reach, nor is the max dex bonus any problem for a dwarven tank

Using the barb past live is useless, the rage clicky doesn't work with the defender stance, the toughness feat gives more hp in the long run. In the past the barbarian past live feat did not count towards epic toughness, it might be fixed by now but i couldn't find it in the notes

Enhancements:
Racial/class toughness 3&4 is very expensive for its return (40/ 48 in stance) costing 6! points.
why critical accuracy and all the weapon focus/specialization feats? are you planning to switch a lot between defender and Kensai? if not drop these.
fighter haste boost, max this, the dps increase is far bigger then having critical accuracy.
To make Kensai work you'll need far more str anyway

you mention no gear or tomes, since its a tr i recommend getting the free +2 favor tome.
a back up carnifex just in case :P
Gianthold has some nice axes too, grind out white dragon scales (heroic and epic) while your there.
pdk commendations give ok gear too!

consider large shields instead of tower shields, at end game the ac difference is 3, but the dex to armor class bonus can be far bigger.

warning, the enhancement pass might change a lot to dwarven tanks
