It is still early days (Level 2) but I'd like to make a jack-of-all-trades, trapper, opener that won't suck at high level and 'd like some advice or ideas. The plan is that primary damage will be repeating crossbow and my pet. (I'll just need a blue bar for healing the pet.)

So he's a Dwarf with the following stats at the moment:

Base Stats with no equipment bonuses
-------------------------------------

Str : 12
Dex: 17
Con: 16
Int : 17
Wis: 10
Cha: 6 (He doesn't like people.)

Balance : 8
Bluff : -1
Concentration : 8
Diplomacy : -0.5
Disable Device : 12
Haggle : -1
heal : 2
Hide : 4
Intimidate : -1
Jump : 2
Listen : 4
Move Silently : 7
Open Lock : 13
Perform n/a
Repair : 8
Search 14
Spot : 9
Swim : 2
Tumble : n/a
UMD : 5

Relevant Skills :
---------------

Trap finding
Toughness
Unleash Iron Defender

------------------------------------------------------------

Also, I have a few direct questions.

Is UMD important for an arti?
What armour should an arti look to wear?

Int 18, 16 Dex, 14(16)* Con, 6(8) Chr
*That should be a 32 point build. Numbers in () are options.

Keep UMD, Search, Disable Device - Maxed
Highly recommend Spot and Open Locks maxed also for first time through. But you can do ~90% of Locks with +4 skill + Gear if you don't mind trying a few times.

1 (full) point into tumble. ~4 points into Jump.

UMD is very beneficial/important. This class was built for UMD :)
Can't answer the armor question. I just use the best I can find ATM. Currently though I am looking for Warding armor until I can get some nice named armor. Not sure which will happen first lol.

Not sure if you need help with feats but easy to post if you need 'em.

Weapon - You will want a nice Paralyzer, Banisher, and Disrupter at the appropriate levels. For DPS I would say Holy Burst (Or Elemental Burst) or Lacerating (Good or Maiming). Basically the best you can find :)

Since UMD is so important and I'll be using lots of magical clickies should I stick to leather armour for the lower spell casting failure and spend an action point or two on the ability that lowers spellcasting penalties of armour? (I forget the name.)

Arcane Spell Failure won't be an issue for a while. Artificers don't face ASF for their infusions as long as they're in light armor and wands and clickies don't require ASF checks either.

Once you start using more Arcane scrolls, (divine scrolls don't check ASF either), then getting your ASF down becomes an issue. The only enhancement that dwarves get is the reduction from the PrE, but you can craft twilight shards for your armor. But you shouldn't be using so many scrolls that you can't deal with a 5 or 10% failure rate till 10th level at least.

I wouldn't rely on your pet to do much DPS; if nothing else, the AI is underwhelming, and after a while I find it to be more of an SP sponge than anything else. :( You're better off using SPs for your DPS spells.

Yes - in fact, thanks to their inherent bonuses, I'd say arties make the best UMD toons overall.

Arties aren't like bards; they don't take any ASF from their infusions because they don't technically count as arcane spells. The only thing they have to worry about is ASF w/arcane scrolls (as you mentioned), and how often do they use those?

Dwarf doesn't really bring anything special to a ranged arty (apart from style ); but the basics for a typical arty are the same, IMHO. Here's my basic arty build template:
