Reading the spell Druid Seasons' Herald it states you get "+1 caster level and max caster level." What is the difference between caster level and max caster level in this instance?

caster level is your character level plus any relevant bonuses to caster level, such as this one. Max caster level is something that is set individually by each spell, and limits the maximum damage a spell can do. For example, Ice Storm has a max caster level of 15, so if you have at least 15 levels of druid, any bonuses to caster level are irrelevant with regards to the damage of Ice Storm. However, an increase to the max caster level means that Ice Storm would then have a max caster level of 16, allowing for more of your caster levels to apply to the spell.

Aha! I was trying to explain it to a friend, and understood the Caster Level bit, but wasn't sure where it was going with the Max Caster Level. Thanks for clearing it up.

It also doesn't work for all spells (e.g. Cone of Cold)
