Howdy everyone!

We've opened up Lamannia with Update 14 Patch 1!

We're looking to get a bit of feedback on the updates we've made to the raid, Caught in the Web.

From 7pm to 10pm Eastern (GMT-4) Tonight, July 1st, There will be devs online looking to observe raids being run as well as assist in getting people into the raid itself.

Please define "assisting"

As last time, the in-game devs were not HELPING anyone. They were only mocking, and occasionally removing experience points. Asking to be raised to level 20 to participate was met with mockery or outright no's.

I do not want to waste my or my guilds time coming to your betas if this is the treatment we can expect.

Or, you can bribe us again. After all, you are asking us to beta test something for free; when we are already beta-testing the live code for free.

Character wipe?? Kookie?

VERY unlikely considering the amount of time that takes, and a good number of people had HUGE problems getting characters tranferred last time. Many tried a few times and gave up :/

Just completed, being sent back to start if someone falls off/gets knocked off by hand was really annoying especially when at last fight. Perhaps a rez shrine or even a different penalty would be better suited. Dont know if working as intended but those that were back at the start were not able to get through portal to the chests was also kinda lame.

Raid feels much more reasonable now. Still have a few nit-picks on annoying/obnoxious mechanics, but now the raid feels workable with the changes. We are going to run it a second time, so I will save my detailed feedback and comments until after the second run.

I will admit there were some changes that actually made me feel like the raid could potentially be fun now.

I uninstalled Lama since the beta is gone and the big changes are now live.

(Which, incidentally destroyed my live version of DDO as well and had to be completely reinstalled from scratch. Yay. )

Good luck to you guys, and big thanks to the folks that are still bug testing and helping out!

(I found the experience to be fun but moderately frustrating with constant wipes, resets, down time, unplayability issues, bugs, etc.. So I am opting out of Lamma land for the foreseeable future to ensure my continued enjoyment of the game.)

REALLY looking forward to the patch notes, though. And of course, for the changes that inevitably occur without being noted anywhere that the players inevitably find and bring to the forums.

Here are some updated notes from our run last night. WARNING! SPOILERS!!!!

Enter Lolth

The first big fight when you find Anna in front of Lolth is great. You feel like you are in the presence of a God with Lolth's enormous image overlooking the fight. There are a few things that I have to critique though:

-We can now melee Lolth. This was a much needed change, glad to see it.

-Lolth's "laser beam" attack still feels super cheesy to me. I suppose if I was a god I would probably shoot laser beams out of my eyes too at little people trying to attack me, but...still feels cheesy when seen.

-Instantly dieing if you fall off the platform. I have mixed feelings about this mechanic. On the one hand, I'm super happy we are not just tossed somewhere randomly on the map, lemming-pugs on live would never find their way anywhere and would make it a nightmare. On the other hand, getting placed back at the beginning if you fall off is an absolute horrible penalty. I'll expand on it later.
-Anna's AI has vastly improved. Bravo devs, this really could've killed the raid and it appears she is now "smart" enough to tolerate.

One other note, on our second attempt through we got stuck at the encounter with Lolth at the beginning. as we turned to start, the barrier was up and nothing was spawning - no legs of the goddess, no bebiliths, nothing. It was completely silent, we ran around for 5 minutes trying to figure out if there was anything else we could do. We are assuming the raid just bugged out.

OK so a few other notes about the various encounters we dealed with:

Hand of the Goddess - this needs to be changed to not knock people off the platform randomly, especially with the new penalty for falling off. We easily added 10-15 minutes onto our raid because the hand knocked a few of us off while we were fighting waves of trash mobs. Having to send someone all the way back to start, especially when we aren't allowed to use things such as D-door is...painful. and annoying. and seems like a deliberate timesink that penalizes us for no real reason. If we really need to keep this in the raid, I would suggest we give the hand a different set of abilities/attacks, because honestly as it was, it is cheesy. It followed us around and while we were moving, 99% of the time did nothing. Occasionally it would shine a bright purple light in which I thought I was about to be abducted by aliens. I would much prefer to see it knock players down rather than smack them around and throw us off the platform. I would also really like to see a way for the party to deal with the hand to drive it away / get rid of it completely.

Break The Orbs (optional) - Very impressed with this change. I like how we zone to different areas through the "waypoints" along the way to the end so the optionals are really not far out of the way. I also really like that the orbs are now guarded by purple named mini-bosses. This is what I felt the raid really needed, to make it less monotonous.

The end fight - This was a huge disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it is vastly improved - with DM text hinting us on how to complete it. What I didn't like is two of our party members fell off the edge during the fight and were knocked back all the way to the beginning. adding insult to injury, after we got Anna through the portal, the barrier went back up. We found that in the cave following the fight with Lolth (where the loot is), we could then use ddoor. unfortunately even after using ddoor the three guys stuck behind the barrier had no way of going back through to get to the loot. My suggestion is if we have to have a death penalty like this, please go oldschool and make it like reaver/tod. give us a penalty box and move the soul stones automatically to the end room with a res shrine after the raid is completed.

I liked how the raid is much more linear now and less maze-like. That will make it much friendlier to run on live. I felt the very last animation of Anna pushing back Lolth was very cheesy too. Good concept, just cheesy.

I think with just a little bit more polish the raid could be very popular on live, great progress.

Turbine, I know you have the best of intentions asking for player help and feedback. However, you really need to streamline the charactercopy process so people can copy over the characters regardless of failed attempts in the past. I really do not want to test Lamannia content with suboptimal characters because I can't copy them over from live servers.

Heck, it would even be nice if Lammania forums weren't way down at the bottom of the front page, and people were aware that there was a patch on the server.

Yep, the way I see it.....

Is if Turbine wants people that are PAYING to play their game to Beta test, or preview test or wahteer you want to call it... They need ot get their stuff straight... Make it easy to do... Provide CLEAR AND CONCISE INFORMATION ON HOW TO SOPY CHARACTERS OVER, (making sure that system actually works for everybody). And then creating situations where people can access and have information about what exactly Trubine wants them to check out. They made steps on a couple of these issues during the MOTU Beta, but not nearly enough. The amount of time each Beta was up was too short, the hassles players had to go through to get the information and tools to check things out was to cumbersome. Sure, some people were able to navigae it better than others, depending on the times they play etc etc.

It just seems to be poorly organized, with little to no real straight line information, all done in too short of a time period.

1. Insure character copy WORKS
2. Provide clear schedule, with advance notice, in a prominant way.
3. Provide tools neccesary to test what they want tested, without players having to beg and plead at a specific time.

There still seems to be a good number of peopel that ARE willing to test and evaluate things. It's just that Turbine creates situations where those people have to jump thru hoops to do so. Those hoops invariably create a situation where less and less people are willing to PAY to test this stuff. And then you have to try and entice a new group to do it, only for those new peopel to get frustrated and give up..... This has been going on for years... I understand there are budgetary constraints, but when I see Devs complaining that Lama is a ghost town, perhaps they should look at the system, and how cumbersome it is.... THAT would explain a lot ;)

I came across this thread (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=381872) today.

In short: aliases now seem to be stored in layout files in XML format. Looks like people who use different alias files will now have to use different layout files for the same purpose.
Both files are manually editable in text editors, which should make the migration easier.

All Evenstar Challenge ingreds and Commendations will hence forth be BTA and all current ones will convert from BTC to BTA.

What happened to our BTA ingreds are traded for BTC or BTA items theory of ingredient created stuff? BTC is just annoying... though I realize it's done to sell bags.

Moreover, the relic weapons are meant to be combined with the Planar Focus trinkets to access the planar conflux ability, making those unusable on a monk also.

Well that's more of a problem with quarterstaves than not having handwraps drop. If they made staff combat more appealing to monks, with more options from loot, enhancements, and destinies for staff combat, it wouldn't be a problem.

◦ Fixed a crashing issue when moving between quests or teleporting

From U 14 release notes.

My computer have not crashed more in all my years playing DDO. And by crashing I meamn blue screen windows 7 entire computer restart. Last might the computer had a VERY hard time coming back. I'm thinking it's really messing up my hard drive.

I have all updated drivers, clean register all that jazz. Since u 14 it's a headshot to my computer every now and then.

I'd love a confirmation from a dev saying - yeah - we really fixed it this time 'cause I don't want to replace hardware over this game.

Ok. You're right. My post should have stipulated that ~98% of monks (those that use handwraps) dont have a reason to run the new raid or pickup engame trinkets or bother getting the ultimate FR favor reward.

It only happens when I play DDO and it happens like the release notes said about the fix; when moving from one area to another or teleporting.

I suspect they are trying to get as much as possible into this particular patch, and just need to come up with a firm 'feature lock' deadline for the patch.

It is unfortunate tho that past experience indicates that probably won't happen until late tonight or tomorrow.

It is just a little odd that the patch is on Lam already but the notes aren't ready.

It's a new process called Plug and Pray. In theory it could work.

I worked for many years as a project manager for software changes in the financial sector, where quality control was of paramount importance. Testing strategies were always quite similar to insure that the final product was working correctly.

1. Identify which issues/bugs are to be corrected
2. Determine a method to test the change (including indirect impact of the change)
3. Work on software changes in a development environment
4. Peer review the software change
5. Client test the changes in another test environment (Lama in this case)
6. Compile feedback on unresolved / new issues following changes
7. Make adjustment to fix issues or removed them from current planned changes (depending on complexity and time constraints)
8. Place final product into production

Its seems like the extremely important first step of determining which issues are addressed and are the client revision environment (Lama) is being skipped.

This might explain the proliferation of bugs making it to Live. The left hand isn't sure what the right hand is doing.

Hopefully, this is taken as constructive criticism of the testing process and not an attack on Turbine

I love Theories!

Yep, this is Trubien standard practice.. They really have no idea if the patches they put out will actually work on Live. This is well tested, as anybody who's been aorund this game for a long time will know. Sometiems it works, sometimes it doesn't and sometimes..... Well it all goes pear shaped....... It seems we've had a whole pear orchard dropped on our heads :o

I'm not trying to be mean here... And I really hate beating up the Devs.. I know that most of them work very hard... But when you can't even get clear release notes out... That means the various Devs and or their team leaders are failing to properly log their work. If this is the case, then how can QC do their jobs? And in the end, as horrible an enviroment as Lama is for testing what will hit live, since it's not a live server/client situation, how can the PAYING customers that do go over there know what to look for? Oh wait they don't...

Totally 100% baffling, to say the least.....

xoowak
07-06-2012, 11:28 AM
The lack of release notes just means no one can call them on it when they pull their "throw something on Lama the day before the update, send it to live, then act surprised when the game breaks" move again. It was on Lama the whole time, we swear...:D

I think it was more far more appropriate and less risky to simply take all the fixes done after the patch 1 feature lock and bundle them together as a future date patch 2.

This allows us to understand and test the features of the patches in a stable build environment.

Ah, so the patch that was previously released to Lam was a partial preview of the patch. I guess that is better than nothing.

Must have hit the 'feature lock' deadline...

Patch notes are up http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=376774 but the did not change the post name still shows the 15th of june:

Couple of things that stand out as changed:

1) freedom of movement now only effect magical effects - I have to ask why, was the imunity to slippery serfaces just so OP that it had to be excluded. 2 quest come to mind that will be tougher because of this change Tor (the white dragon) and Tempast Spine (the final fight, slidding all over the puzzle woot)

2) And they have confirmed that heal and mass heal have "reduced benifit from spell power" - and other unnamed (i guess us mushrooms have to grope about and find it for ourselves) SLA's

I also see no fix mentioned for Warforged healing amp, attack bonuses not showing correctly in the inventory panel, and other problems/bugs that we are seeing in the great expansion (of bugs) that we all paid for.

Wait, so it WAS a nerf?

"Spells that gain reduced benefit from spell power now mention it in their descriptions (Heal, Mass Heal, and some spell-like abilities)."

I'm noticing reduced spellpower across most divine spells, not just healing. So I guess it was a last-minute divine nerf. Not only totally unnecessary, but definitely falls into the category of dealbreaker, for me at any rate. Totally unjustified, given the boosts given to other classes.

Very disappointed.

thank you for your responce.

But i have to ask - what the thinking was behind the divine caster/healing nerf - they already get reduced spell power for thier spells (at a higher AP cost) than wizards and sorcerers do, and now healing is further reduced (as are some unnamed SLA's) - I'm sorry but the logic here just escapes me.

I'd really like to know this too. My heal spell took a 200 HP hit after the update, and it's to the point where if there's a Warforged party member (and a large portion of them seem to feel Healer's Friend isn't worth the AP nowdays >.<), I have two options: dump massive amounts of SP into healing them, or let them die.

I just don't get it.

Thanks Tolero. What is the ETA on patch 2? I know I have said this but I cannot stress enough the IMPORTANCE of fixing Warforged Healer's Friend. This problem COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN some players (I myself have 3 warforged and only 1 fleshy toon) in more difficult content. It would be nice if we could enjoy the new endgame content soon instead of kiting monsters around on a melee dumping 8 heal scrolls into yourself to top off. I urge you to PLEASE make this particular fix a HIGHER priority. I have made healers literally CRY. (I have 30% + 20% + 10% heal amp gear on.)

They make an update where it is now fairly simple to have 1300-1600 hitpoints in the epic levels and many people find that healing amp is just a waste of slots/ap's, and this has created a mana sponge situation - add to that warforged (all healing amp currently broken) and you have a very negitive situation.

I just plain do not understand the thinking behind this move - why all the divine hate (or more correctly why all the cleric hate) - it is just truely baffling

Im going to haft to throw my hat into the ring for "no healers friend fix, no patch 1". It was reported more than 6 weeks before the launch and my favored soul heals herself with potions because its just too costly in a group to heal myself. The healing penalty for WF needs to be removed if you can not fix the effect. The double negative stat cancels out the other benefits of WF over other races after the disease and poison immunity nerf.

Other

Fixed an issue with downward spiraling sound volumes. Sound levels should now be more consistent, and remember where you put them.
It is no longer possible to get stuck in a "Save Changes" dialog in the LFM.
Fixed a crashing issue during reincarnation.
Added in more sound effects for monsters and NPCs that were previously not playing.
Made significant optimizations to server memory allocations.
Removed all suggestions to take the "Combat Casting" feat from the chargen advice for all classes.
Fixed a problem where the Wisdom description in chargen wasn't fitting in the UI.
Fixed issue where the wrong loading screen was displayed when travelling from Eveningstar Cavern to the Demonweb.
It is no longer possible to get stuck in a "Save Changes" dialog in the LFM.
Fixed a crashing issue during reincarnation.
Added in more sound effects for monsters and NPCs that were previously not playing.

Small copy/paste error in ORANGE.

I'd LOVE to hear more information about RED, and whether or not these significant optimizations will reduce the issues with lag.

If I am expecting healing assistance (AKA, I'm not a warforged pale master doing my own healing), I ALWAYS take the three tiers of Healer's Friend. I even carry a blood docent around on Metalbone that I am willing to swap in if I am too costly SP-wise.

I've never had complaints. :D

Couldnt see any mention of the Assassinate bug where it appears to be dealing damage before making the attempt meaning you then get aggro and the roll cant be made.

Im sure a Dev said they would look in to this. Hard to believe the order in which checks are made during combat is hard to fix...

NOT fixxing the WF healing amp bug? and it wont be fix until END of july? Hell... Might as well push it back to U15 at this point.

And dont give me this "we are still looking into it". You knew since phase 2... I see other bugs were fixxed.

Not happy about this.

good fixes overall, though some key fixes seem to be lacking. Warforged healers friend and rogue's backstab issues being among them.

Exalted Angel

Divine Wrath should now function. It now uses the better of Wisdom or Charisma to calculate DC's.
Avenging Light now uses the better of Wisdom or Charisma to calculate DC's.

Nice to see those are now usable for casters as they should. Now please consider doing the same for shadowdancers. Their abilites still have a mix of dex/int to calculate dcs, with their defining ability (exec strike) being dex based. Currently, there is little incentive to go full dex on any build, having the better of dex/int in there would synergize way better with the plethora of different builds involved.

um, REPAIR spells aren't affected by HEAL amp. two totally different types of hp restoration there. The issue is that WF aren't getting bonuses from healing amp enhancements/items at the moment, which means they are only getting healed for 50% from positive energy spells, like cure serious wounds or heal. This has absolutely no bearing on spells like repair serious wounds or reconstruct, as they are a completely different type of energy.

I have not tested that but you may have hit the nail on the head that healing amp on a WF is going to repair and not healing.

epic weapon blanks used in crafting.

minimum level 20 ? way too much.
at level 20, your not going to be using crafted weapons, because you can't crafting
in those epic effects needed at that level.

How about a compromise ?

1[ ] no minimum level
2[ ] minimum level 8
3[ ] minimum level 20

This would compliment the new stronger armor types

Well, I never intended my suggestion to make 'boss' beater weapons for the lowly levels 1-19

I don't see anything in the Known Issues or Release notes about a fix for the Momentum Swing for Hafl-Orcs using a Great Axe/Maul.

Happily using Cannith Crafted weapons to beat Epic end game content without breaking a sweat. My crafted weapon recipe of choice?

+5 Holy Burst <material> Weapons of Vampirism
- On a toon with 400% Heal Amp and Fists of Light.

Epic weapon blanks would give me a nice DPS bump up on this for the harder difficulties.

Turbine are spot on in making Epic Weapon blanks Absolute Minimum Level 20. there Epic weapons intended for use in Epic content. Allowing them from 12, 8 or even level 1 doesn't make sense.

Lastly, if anyone wants throw in the argument of 'have to re-do all that work in remaking my PL15 weapons on Epic Blanks now', well, sorry, this is an MMO and equipment evolution is part of the game.

Now, I have 6 Locus of Vol's to go farm out ready for when I get my Epic Silver/Adamantine/Cold Iron weapons.

so to clerify...you dissagree because you think you should be level 20 before

My points is that the leveling boss beaters (+4 holy of bane) continue to be ML13 and continue to be the preferred choice for leveling, or maybe you go with +5 instead for ML15. If you wanted to increase their power you could up the bane to greater, but that drastically raises the ML. Just like how it works with epic weapon blanks. Which is exactly how it should be, IMO.

Epic weapon blanks are valuable because they get the extra 1[W] from being epic. Of course they should be ML20; that's the entire point of an epic weapon. And the most natural weapons to use these blanks for are +5 burst of greater bane boss beaters, which end up being ML20 anyway.

You seem to think you should be able to use an epic weapon before level 20, which I personally find insane.
