It is my understanding, that not many people use the brand new UI feature of looking at your own face while smelling troglodytes and swimming in lava(magma?). It is my further and profound understanding, that this feature has been the first one to be turned off in the UI settings. I feel it's a shame that such a feature should be neglected like this.

While bathing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__5p_ZPdwv4#t=5m3s) I have masterfully deducted the core of the problem. People are switching the portrait off because of fear of the unknown! You might not know it, but I can assure you, that it is so.

From here on, the solution is obvious. What has ought us all how to fight our fears? Parents? Teachers? Hollywood/sport rolemodels?
No.
DooM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_%28video_game%29) has!

Turbine thinks so too and has given us clues in U11:
Repeaters vs gatling?
Arm cannons vs plasmagun??
Lord of Blades vs Cyberdemon???
Coincidences????
I THINK NOT!!!!!

I personally do not mind this, but the half-way integration does vex me. I therefore propose, that the character portrait be fully ported in DooM style.

TL;DR & picture > 1/200 of a dictionary:
My proposal for character portrait is:

You might not take this seriously, but I really think it would be a nice addition :).

At any rate it's not gonna happen. I don't think there's a single account of facial animation that exists in the game, save for enemies like dragons whose mouthes move. Also there's no blood.

I would rather have that than the UI we have now ;)

Ah, the good old Doom, that brings back memories of setting it up though Dos and being so proud when I found out that I could shortcut it so I didn't have to type everything again. This made my day.

As for DDO, I'm divided personally. Part of me is like yes! oh god yes lets do this because it would be awesome and add.... well.... that's where the "what's the point of it comes into play."

Edit: Also, if you are going for DooM memories, think of pet rabbits for the final screenshot.

Hey, that would be ok with me too! Anything that makes it easier for me to get an "at-a-glance" idea of who's hurting the most without requiring math skills or the ability to discern a short red bar from a reddish background...

It's the same point that it had in DooM. It's the same point that character portraits have in DDO. It's also the same point, that all the grunts that a character makes when attacking have. And the ambiental music, cobwebs in the corner of a dungeon, white dragon flying over Korthos, any icons next to teleport destinations ...
It's the <sense>-candy contributing to immersion.

EDIT: and looking awesome.
