I think it would be great for rangers being current ranger summons are completely useless there not worth the spell points or a spell slot.

This would act as an excuse for devs not to boost ranger damage output. I would not agree to this.

While I agree with you that this should be brought over to Rangers as a genuine Animal Companion - it probably won't happen for several updates (if at all) so that they don't dilute one of the "selling points" of Artificers. They're likely to include a variation of this for Druids before they do Rangers... and we all know Druids are likely to be long ways off.

Lol, sorry but this isn't gonna happen. I totally agree with it, but no.

Pets are one of the main reason newbs are gonna buy Arty, and if rangers get the same thing, no more $$$ for turbine.

This.

A ranger's companion is a watered down version of a druid's, so you wouldn't get them until at least the same time as druids are released / get pets, if ever.

I hope rangers do get their animal companions like they do in pnp, and I think that it would be good for turbine to do so. This is my reasoning behind that last part:

Imagine Artificers being the alpha druids testing out the balance issues and problems that they will have with introducing something like animal companions. They let people play artificers as they make fixes to the program and seeing how people respond to it and use it then after a while they release ranger animal companion as the beta druid companion. Its basically the same thing except at a weaker level (1 ranger level counts as half a druid level for this if I remember correctly.) This makes people look at the class again and they get to test basically half of the druid class before they release it creating a less buggy version so they can focus more on the bugs created by other parts of the class.

Fix the rather weak ranged damage for rangers, then we'll talk about pets.

The launch of this pet class, Fernando confirmed, is part of their development of mechanics that leads them a step closer to the Druid class. Future plans also encompass familiars for Sorcerers and Animal Companions for Rangers.

I think he probably meant wizards as sorcs don't get families in DnD, that I know of.

Sorcerers do too get familiars. Still wondering if they could introduce new feats like improved familiar that would make you able to get a better familiar.

No thanks. In pnp a Ranger's pet is a roleplay thing, not really a combat thing. They tend to be well below a ranger's power level for that reason.

I would much rather they work on a Ranger's subpar dps than that.

Seems that they do. I may be thinking of 2E DnD then again... it becomes a blur when trying to remember the different rule sets which also includes DDO own house rules.

currently, rangers get a cr 1 pet at 4th lvl
the mage/sorc/fs/cleric get a cr 2
the artificer gets a cr 4

ranger pet is so underpower for thier lvl that it is cosmetic at best, worthless at worst

Im confused. From one point of view OP is right, and ranger pets CR should be multiply x4 to reflect what other casters can get, and to mimic animal companion, but...
This will make the ilusion that beside lack companion rangers are fine, while against FE they are onpair with Kensai, against anything else they are kicked back for 14 dmg pet hit.

The problem with rangers i see:
- To weak against everything else for either 7 dmg per hit or 10% attack speed.
- Levels after 12 are very poor
- Ranger do not bring utylity and buffage as other specialist classes
- its hard to find 16 good spells in ranger list to fil the slots
- Meele capstone is no existing
- Tempets III is "symbolical"
- Ranged combat is slow

So i would rather see devs doing something with above and then give rangers pets or cake.

On another note, the PM summons should be customizable, and every pet in the game should have a hireling bar.

Rangers beware, for when you get your animal companions, you probably will FINALLY be forced to choose between TwF line or the ranged line :rolleyes::rolleyes:

^that...

Hopefully they'll have DWS fully fleshed out... though, for rangers, I believe they need to add a 4th prestige. They have 2 focused on bows, and 1 focused on TWF. Perhaps another prestige focused on damage/tracking...

You mean like Rangers don't already?

They only use Ranged to support TWF or TWF to support Ranged-- make up for Ranged's crappy damage.

Ranged gets boosted, Animal Companion gets introduced, Ranger has to choose which path to take at level 2, just like Monk does at level 3.

Do it right, and Ranger will actually get a buff from all of this.

And for the record, I would not suggest having Ranger's pet be CR -4. I would prefer a different penalty. Just don't know what, yet.

It's not -4. It's actually 1/2 the Ranger's Level, unlike a Druid.

the dev's allready said it before. some classes got different stuff from the pnp dnd. they lost one thing and got an other.

wizards lost 1st level scribe scroll. they get a free mete magic feat at level one instead.
sorcerer lost the high amount of spells per day -changed to extra spell power and X2 s.p. from items .
RANGERS lost pets, they got both melee and ranged combat style feats. yep. if this was pnp you rangers would get a pet with 1/2 your levels. but also would have to pick ether the melee fighting feats or the ranged ones. not both.

so. ranger get pet? not likely.

All casters lost cantrips, but that's not a huge loss. It just would've been nice to have unlimited cantrips, versus echoes of power.

Likelihood aside... I support the motion for better Animal Companions.

Come on, this is a place for ideas and suggestions... not a place to do Turbine favors by shooting down our own ideas before they even have to.
