As the title says, I'm a new player. I've tried a few of the premade characters but so far the highest level i've got to is level 3. So now that I've got a basic understanding of the game I'm taking a dive into the custom character. I downloaded the character planner and have read the wiki and an Arcane Archer looks pretty cool, so this is what I've come up with:

Level 20 Ranger True Neutral Elf Male
Hit Points: 242
Spell Points: 483
BAB: 20\20\25\30\30
Fortitude: 14
Reflex: 18
Will: 8

Strength 14 4 - 18
Dexterity 16 1 5 22
Constitution 14 - - 14

Wisdom 14 - - 14
Charisma 8 - - 8

Skills (Level 20)
Hide 11

Move Silently 11
Search 23
Spot 23
Balance 11
Tumble 1

3 Ranger Point Blank Shot -
4 Ranger - -
5 Ranger - Favored Enemy: Giant
6 Ranger Mental Toughness -

8 Ranger - -
9 Ranger Improved Critical: Ranged Weapons -
10 Ranger - Favored Enemy: Evil Outsider
11 Ranger - -
12 Ranger Toughness -
13 Ranger - -
14 Ranger - -
15 Ranger Power Critical Favored Enemy: Construct
16 Ranger - -
17 Ranger - -
18 Ranger Weapon Finesse -
19 Ranger - -
20 Ranger - Favored Enemy: Elemental

Enhancements Highest Tier
Ranger Sprint Boost I
Elven Dexterity II
Elven Ranged Attack II
Elven Ranged Damage II
Ranger Favored Attack II
Ranger Favored Damage IV
Ranger Favored Defense III
Ranger Favored Resistance III
Ranger Devotion I
Ranger Energy of the Wild II
Ranger Dexterity III
Ranger Arcane Archer
Ranger Arcane Archer: Conjure Arrows V
Arcane Archer: Acid Arrow
Arcane Archer: Explosive Arrow
Arcane Archer: Imbue Force Arrow
Arcane Archer: Imbue Force Burst Arrow
Arcane Archer: Slaying Arrow
Arcane Archer: Terror Arrow
Ranger Master of Archery

So any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I said it's my first custom character so try to go easy on me :). Oh and to be honest, I have no idea why I picked True Neutral alignment, would a better alignment suit this class better?

Lower your Wisdom. Starting with 10 or even 8 will let you cast all your spells, though you may not be able to at level 4 if you start with Wisdom, but that's not a huge deal.

Don't put skill points Search. There's no use for it that can't be covered with a cheap item if you absolutely need it.

Power Critical is an almost useless feat. Replace it with a Improved Critical: Slashing if you plan on meleeing.

Weapon Finesse is basically useless for you. Your Dexterity won't be much higher than your Strength, if at all. Your Strength will be high enough to hit with, regardless. Power Attack should be the replacement.

This is all with the expectation that you want to play in groups and eventually get involved in high-level raids or epics. If you're just playing with friends casually, then something like Power Attack or some less-than-optimal stats aren't going to make or break much.

Lower wisdom to at least 10 if not 8, bump strength to 16, put all five levelups in strength, take toughness at level 1. You don't need Weapon Focus or Power Critical. I'm not sure how useful Point Blank Shot is. (Rangers get ManyShot for free; they don't need to meet the prereqs, similar to the TWF feats.)

I was going to say you don't need Mental Toughness either since my ranger uses almost no mana at all since there are no short-duration combat buffs for rangers to worry about, but he's a tempest. I think arcane archers might need mana to make their arrows; if so, I guess Mental Toughness isn't terrible. Just don't take it before level 6 since you can't start a prestige until then anyway.

Fair warning that Arcane Archer isn't viewed all that highly by a lot of people, so you may have trouble getting into high level raids. Would you consider going tempest instead? You still get solid range ability -- all that really matters for pew pewing is ManyShot, which all rangers get for free -- but you'd have a better melee profile, making for a more well-rounded character.

As already said, if you're making a character to play with a static group of friends, Arcane Archer is fine. Heck, it may even be ideal if that's how you planned the group out. My response is more along the lines of advice for if you want to pug.

Definitely stay true neutral. There are several advantages, the best of which is Stability. Armor with greater stability grants +4 AC bonus and +4 to all saving throws, but only works for true neutral. (Superior stability is +6 instead of +4 but is much harder to get.)

On preview, this post sounds pretty negative. For the record, you've done an awful lot of things right in this build. Good work.

Well, the first thing you've done right is find Ron's excellent planner. Great way to fiddle around with things to understand the flow of the class to level 20 without investing lots of in game time.

I'm not really going to comment on the Arcane Archer stuff, because I don't have one, but I will say that I have a classic exploiter (which is the Tempest prestige enhancement plus some bits of pieces, basically rogue splash for traps, and monk splash for the feat and the wisdom bonus to AC). She was a hoot to level and I still have lots of fun with her at end game - probably my most played melee toon. Good DPS with Manyshot and better DPS with mah khopeshes. Worth considering if you like the idea of a ranger but are not wedded to Arcane Archer, which can tend to not feel the love in PUGs because there are some, um, not so wonderful examples out there.

http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=168687 is the exploiter thread if that sounds of interest.

A similar build to exploiter but without the p2p monk class is the tempest trapmonkey (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=277496), which is what I rolled up. Super fun to play, and it's always nice being able to disable traps. He isn't my main, but is my second favorite character by a country mile.

Try to avoid the finesse route like the plague is really all I can think off.

Is Mental Toughness a Arcane Archer prereq? If not, ditch it.

Don't get Weapon Finesse. Your base Str is only slightly lower than your base Dex. And ther are far more buffs for Str then Dx anyway, so your Str will likely wind up higher anyway, or at least equal. So Finesse does little for you, except trick you into thinking you can only use "finesse weapons".

Power Critical is really unnecessary.

Yes Mental Toughness is an Arcane Archer prereq.

To the OP: In terms of alignment I've always felt that unless your class restricts you to a certain alignment (monk, paladin) then true neutral is the way to go.

However, I would say the (alignment restricted) end gear that you will be trying to get in-game should determine your alignment.

As a word of advice, determining what item to slot where can save you a TON of headaches.

Is Mental Toughness a Arcane Archer prereq?
For divine casters like rangers, yes; arcanes can take their class SP enh (or Elven Arcanum if elf wiz).

There are a ton of 28-pt elf AA builds out there; here's mine:

STR-based instead of DEX-based for higher DPS. Dumping WIS means you need to find at least a +3 WIS item or use Owl's WIS to start casting spells; but in the long run it's not really a handicap and it lets me bump up DEX & STR. I specced her for scimitars; if you prefer rapiers, take Aerenal enhs instead of Valenar and IC Pierce instead of Slash. [The trick to playing a good AA is knowing when to use a bow and when to use blades.] EDIT: without a rogue splash, Search is only useful for finding secret doors; just grab a Detect Secret Doors clickie or two instead and put those points elsewhere.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I've done the tweaks and will start it sometime today. I do realize i'm not going to be a death dealing machine. My intention was to kind of make a support character since my wife and I will always be playing together, so I'll always be with at least 1 other person.

What server? It's kind of tough starting out new. Do you have anyone to help you out?
