View Full Version : Monk vs Beholder painting

A half-orc dark monk ponders his next move in VoN 3's beholder room. I modeled the monk after my friend's character, but unlike my friend, my version uses common sense when fighting beholders.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I appreciate the feedback.

Did you use 3D models as a help or is everything hand drawn?

I'm glad you asked, and yes the beholder and monk are both 3d models. I recently finished a modeling and texturing reel, because as much as I like illustration I really want to get into making game characters. Here is a link to the reel if you are curious. It also goes through a quick breakdown of the models.

Absolutely, two heads are better than one.

I can't possibly see how he could be carrying 12 pairs of handwraps, 13 clickies, 4 kamas, and several hundred potions in that skimpy outfit.

You really don't want to know the answer to that. Trust me.

They ought to hire you to do some splash screens...

I really like that idea. Regardless, I will be making more illustrations like this because it is alot more fun than painting flowers or some other mundane garbage along those lines. Even though I know this will never happen, what I really want is to be able to upload custom character models and textures.

This is awesome!

When i first saw this, i was like "heh, someone must've made some DnD art that looks suspiciously like Von3! How funny :D

Then, after surfing through the comments i went back and reread the op. "He MADE this?! Holy handwraps of awesomeness, batman!"

If you're taking suggestions: ever though about VoN6? The weird crazy starry night background, giant red dragon, party of adventurers hiding behind rocks with weapons and spells ready to tackle the beast... VoN^ has always been one of my favorite backdrops in the game ^_^ Although Weapons Shipment is pretty spectacular too, with that massive workmhole-like portal, endless fields of scorched magma-like rock, and a pit fiend and warforged titan dueling to the death :D

If you want another suggestion - ADQ1. Use artistic license to put Lailat onto the lower central platform rather than the upper one, and show the six 'legs' of the platform, plus the stairs up and down.

That dungeon is IMO the most impressive in all of DDO.

This one was already on my short list, because I thought Lailat would make a cool model. A woman with six hands has alot of potential, even if she is a monster. The AtDQ level was definitely one of the more impressive environments. The huge vaulted ceilings and skull columns give you the sense you are going to be in for a nasty fight.

If you're taking suggestions: ever though about VoN6?

This was another iconic level for DDO, but to be honest dragons just don't do it for me. They are a staple of high fantasy and unfortunately as a result are somewhat cliche. Then again, what isn't a cliche? I do however love my blue dragonscale robe. It looks cool and gives me greater arcane lore so I can stay centered and use my handrwaps for stunning.

Curious though, how long does it take you on avg for the 3d work?

It's really hard to say. There are alot of variables that affect the amount of time it takes. I'd say on average about a week to make a textured character and not be rushing any of the steps. I like to design most of my characters from the ground up so I tend to constantly go through major redesigns and it ends up taking forever.

You could buy yourself a nice gaming system and many TPs if you took commissions from players to paint their characters in various quests. A few screenshots and a description (and the necessary time on your part, obviously) is all it would take.

The yellow ring in the background. According to legend, it was formed when Khyber tore into her sister in an argument over what to do with their final creation, creating a band in the sky from the torn scales. The weakest sister, Eberron, decided to hug her evil sister, binding Khyber within, and merged with the planet to create Eberron. Some of Siberys' blood fell from the sky, and where it touched Eberron it became the Dragons, and where it remained untouched it became the (long extinct... or are they?) Couatls. The "Scales" are actually Siberys dragonshards, and are said to hold the key to the Great Draconic Prophecy that guided the three sisters to create reality in the first place.

Again, I really appreciate all of the commentary.

mind if I ask how many hours you put into that?
It's hard to quantify, because I had originally just set out to make some models based on DDO for practice. I decided that if I was going to make the effort I might as well use them for something, which of course ended up being VoN 3. It was probably a couple of weeks worth of work though.

If you'd like another suggestion for future work - how about Cursed Crypt? Lol, no. There are tons of great levels in DDO, but this is pretty low on my list of favorites. I try to avoid the lower Necropolis in general while I am leveling. I don't mind the shadow crypts as much, because they are fairly painless for casters. I can see why melee's would hate them however.

As for what my next piece will be, I'm pretty much set on doing something with the demon queen. I'm already in the process of putting the model together.

have you thought about the abbot vrs your monk? I stopped trying to flag for this after they broke my ghost touch handwraps of disruption. I actually laughed out loud when I realized they had broken every single ghost touch handrwap EXCEPT for the crafted versions. I just imagined a whole room full of programmers all face palming at once. I didn't even know the crafted wraps were broken before that.

Wow. copy-rite, print, sell. It's almost a pity that beholders are unique to D&D, because they are just so cool. As for alot of the other stuff, D&D has "borrowed" ideas from just about every traditional mythology source you can imagine.

Idea wise what about the first wave of the devil invasion in the Marketplace? people running all over the place, poor noobs being butchered by the dozen etc etc. Well, I do love a good noob bloodbath...

I know its a boring area, but just for artwork stuff parts of 3bc are very nice. In this same area is the flagging quests for titan, almost never ran but good looking quests. I personally don't understand why some unique loot hasn't been added to 3BC already. That place is full of pirates. Apparently they all really suck at piracy, as they don't really have any thing worth taking.

Needs more Kobolds!! I'm afraid all of the kobolds were either eaten by beholders or squished into paste by the Inevitable. It was inevitable.

Evokes the same feeling I had my first time in VoN3 on my not-quite-so-prepared barbarian; abject terror followed by steely resolve then raaaaage! Even after all this time I remember my first run too. I was disingrated by a beholder...through a solid wall. It was a neat trick, but I'm glad they can't do it anymore.

Do you do any purely non-computer work? Not if I can help it. I did a pastel for my sister as a Christmas present last year. It was an excercise in frustration. Mistakes are hard to fix without a computer.

Another suggestion:

Room: Crucible, above the maze
Encounter: A Fighter, in full plate, is holding on for dear life to the edge of one of the maze walls. She is straining, and a Windlasher caster is in the process of conjuring a spell to throw at her from above. A halfling rogue, unseen by the Windlasher and obscured by a Blur spell, is just about to dispatch the Gnoll with attacks from his twin Greensteel khopeshes (one is Radiance, and the other Lightning).
Background: The maze - shown in a way that does not show the ground below the fighter, but implies that it is a long way down.
Focus: The fighter.
Mood (the fighter): Grim determination, but her resolve is breaking.
Mood (the gnoll): I don't care for this job, but if this spell doesn't work, the higher-ups will kill me and my family.
Mood (the rogue): Dispassionate killing machine in action.

I like it. Here is my spin on it.

Room: DDO

Mood (the Player): Grim determination, but her resolve is breaking.

Mood (the UI Dev): I don't care for this job, but if this spell doesn't work, the higher-ups will kill me and my family.

Mood (the Project Lead): Dispassionate killing machine in action.

Not if I can help it. I did a pastel for my sister as a Christmas present last year. It was an excercise in frustration. Mistakes are hard to fix without a computer.

And pastel isn't even the worst, try using oil paints :p

Have you considered animation? I got the sense from the site you linked that it would be a short step from creating the models to animating them. Could be seriously cool.

+1 and I'll probably be joining the herd and making it a background too :)

Very nice job!

Incredible!

Caverns of Koromar end fight could be a nice choice for the list.

Main Room in Relic of a Sovereign Past.

Iron Golem Plate in Tempest: Drow Rogue charges in, locks everyone else out behind the gate.

A half-orc dark monk ponders his next move in VoN 3's beholder room. I modeled the monk after my friend's character, but unlike my friend, my version uses common sense when fighting beholders.

Apologies for the necro but I was just looking for a new Google Chrome theme and remembered this picture. I was wondering if any of the graphically artistic forumites might be interested in creating a theme with this image. I might be able to figure it out but wouldn't want to insult the artist by stuffing it up.

Thanks,

The Beholder sees your partial cranium, but cannot decide if it is a shiny rock or not. "I remain still as a statue!", you say! You make your hide save and the beholder turns around.

WOW! This is speachless. I do not have the words to explain how awesome this is. All jokes aside.

I modeled the monk after my friend's character...

From one artist to another, congratulations on an awesome picture.

Beautiful artwork. It almost, almost, makes me want to run VON3 more than once this life (I donĀ“t rerun quests on same lifes, except when a guildie asks me to).
