No matter how much strength damage I do to air elementals (in the vale and fleshmaker's lab in necro 4) they never seem to go into auto crit. Why?

You can't crit elementals because, like undead, they don't have any vital areas to crit. In other words they're immune to crits.

I had thought immunity to stat damage and 100% fortification were synonymous.

It seems to be an over looked area of stat damage. I have done the same thing with earth elementals when I first got a stat damager. I was able to see the -stat numbers, but never placed them into auto-crit. Figured out you just couldn't crit hit them.

Idk if the other affects of -stats still apply though. Possibly less damage from -str or easier to hit with -dex. Would be interesting to see if you could auto-crit them after monk curse that lets you crit golems/undead/eles. Its not terribly important, but would be interesting to find out.

Stat damage is completely separate from fortification, which controls the extra physical hitpoint damage from critical hits and sneak attacks.
