OK, so I read a lot about AC becoming "irrelevant" at the "higher levels", and some
builds work to achieve some truly fearsome AC numbers, so I'm wondering if there
is a list or table somewhere that tells you what "useful" AC truly is for levels as you
advance. I think it would be valuable to know when you're planning a build what
AC levels you should be targeting, and when in your build to give up and go robes.

theres no fixed number but the following formula is quite accurate:
(Level+1)*2+20 = good ac

though i doubt that the real ones, cant remember it exactly, 62ac at 20 just isnt much

€: (level+20)*2 = good

that might been it...there was a +20 and a *2 in there at least

But you definitely don't need 42 AC at L1 to be useful :p

For the most part monster have an attack bonus of their CR rating*2. so if you're fighting stuff with CR15, the've got an AB of 30, a 40 AC would mean you'd get missed 50% of the time. A 50 AC would mean they'd need to role a 20 to hit you (not counting BS grazing hits).

Notice I said for the most part - in Amrath the the CR20 Orthons can't touch me at 65 but the Bearded Devils - same CR rating - hit me all the time.

true, so there goes the second formula too, hehe
(though 42 at lvl1 makes you invincable)

Pre GH it isn't hard to get useable AC by just getting the best armor/protection/shield/dex items you can find.

Once you hit GH, things start scaling at a rediculous rate. AC that kept you unhittable before GH will be like a hot knife through butter in GH.

You need a minimum of 40 in GH, prob more like 50.
By end game (and I'm not even counting epic) you prob need 70-80 before its even worth talking AC.

One thing I think that comes down to "Usable" AC is people seem to use this phrase in one of two ways.

1. AC that reduces the chances for mobs from content you are playing regularly to hit you by 25 to 75% thus making you harder to kill while not "invincible"

2. AC that reduces the chances for mobs from content you are playing regularly to 5% (natural 20)

Regularly I hear you need a 50+ once you get to giant hold to have "usuable AC" but I believe, tho I am not sure so correct me if I am wrong, that this is based off the 2nd use of "usable AC". So if you have an AC in the 40 range you'd reduce incoming attacks by 50%. Basicly tho most builds will aim for either the 5% chance to be hit or just accept that they will be knocked around 24/7, throw AC in the tank, and load up on guards.

40 is about right for GH, 50 is good for the Vale. You'll get hit but you'll get a hit a lot less than you would with no AC. Amrath is about 60 for normal to not get hit every shot. On elite High 60s works against all the Trash except the Barbazu who can hit low 70s almost all the time.
