Which races are best for which classes and why?
Besides issues of preference, which race is best suited for a particular class or classes?
Each has special abilities or point bonuses, so I'm trying to figure the best combination's.

Elf
Halfling
Human
Warforged
Half-Orc (update 5)

Classes

I'm still new, but I also spend a lot of time reading the forums, compendium, and the wiki, and I can share some of my observations.

Warforged Wizard- Warforged get a Constitution bonus, which is very important for casters. They can self heal with Repair spells. And Intelligence is the only mental stat that doesn't take a hit, making it more difficult to build WF Sorcerers.

Drow Sorcerer- At least this is the class I've most frequently seen the drow associated with. Charisma is among their stat bonuses, but they also take a penalty to Con, which as stated above is important for casters, more so than Dexterity. My opinion personally would be rogue, since they would benefit from all the drow stat bonuses. Dex, which is key to a great many rogue skills and abilities. Int for more skill points as well as Search and Disable Device. And Cha for Use Magic Device and Diplomacy or Bluff.

Halfling Monk- Again, don't really understand the reasoning for it. Just see the build a lot.

Dwarf Fighter or Barbarian- Dwarves just seem geared towards being melees and tanks. I personally was never really a big fan, even in PnP.

Elf Ranger- Elves get Dex bonus, which helps out rangers who take weapon finesse or use bows, and the extra Armor Class helps since Rangers tend to wear light armor. Also Elf race opens up the Arcane Archer line of enhancements.

Human ?- Can't really pin Humans down to a best class. They are the definition of versatility. They don't get any stat bonuses or penalties, and the extra skill and feat that they get can be useful to just about anyone. Though if I was going to make a general suggestion it would be a class that doesn't seem to have enough skill points and feats. Cleric comes to mind.

Half-Orc- Wasn't aware that this was confirmed, but I'm glad it is. If PnP is any indication then Barbarians will be popular, but just about any melee class can benefit from the Strength bonus. Even thug type rogues.

Anyway, like I said, I'm new. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

There really is no best class or worst class for each race, though some races do have more going for them in certain classes.

* Barbarian
Human.
Because of high hit points, Humans will benefit from increased recovery when healed. It helps when you are taking quite a bit of the damage.

* Bard
None.
Bards are just too versatile to name a best race for.

* Cleric
Dwarf.
You get Dwarven Axes, get more spell points from Enhancements, and get more Constitution for higher Concentration.

* Favored Soul
No Idea.
What can I say, I really don't know about the class.

* Fighter
Dwarf.
Racial bonuses will fit in well to make the Fighter even more scary.

* Monk
No Idea.
Another Class I don't know much about.

* Paladin
Drow Elf.
Synergy is above and beyond what other races could offer.

* Ranger
Human.
Rangers tend to have some survival problems, so being a Human will help.

* Rogue
Halfling.
Them short people make the best backstabbers.

* Sorcerer
Warforged.
It doesn't matter if the racial bonuses will be lower, the self healing sorcerer is far ahead of any other.

* Wizard
Warforged.
Refer to what was said for Sorcerer, and apply as Wizard.

A Note Then About Elves:

Elves tend to be under par in relation to other Races, when it comes to being the best at anything. This is why you don't even see them mentioned once here.

There really is no best race for any class... Racial benefits are pretty small in the grand scheme of things...

Probably the best case can be made for warforged as wizards and sorcerors because of the self-healing..

There are some nice synergies that lead certain races to certain classes, but any race can do very well at any class.

It all depends if you have 32 point characters available or not. If you do, pick Warforged. But then again, they are the easy button in DDO.

Just pick Halflings for everything. Can't go wrong there. The mobs won't attack you at all, they'll think you're too stupid. Heck, they'll even tell you to quit playing DDO. It gets worse when they see you breakdancing in the middle of a Boss Fight.

And then....

The halfling pulls out his Giant +8 Stupid Good Burst Rapier of Awesomeness and the enemies run away due to the awesomeness of the halfling.

So, warforged for 32 pointers, Halfling just because.

No. Dwarves treat Dwarven axes as melee weapons. You still have to take fighter, paladin, barbarian, or ranger to get them for free.

The problem is each class has different builds, but I'll say its a "generic build" and see what I get...

Barbarian = Warforged [runner up is dwarf]
The built in defenses, quick armor swap, extra power attack, and greatsword support all make this the way to go. **** on a healer but who needs em!

Bard = Drow [runner up is Halfling]
Were talking caster bard here and the extra charisma is great. Con is not much of a bard staple "not in the face" is more the typical bard strategy than tanking.

Cleric = Human [close runner up dwarf]
Humans can get a wisdom bonus and they extra feat and skill points are nice. Dwarves would win but for the cha penalty.

Favored Soul = Human? (runner up drow?]
I'm not much of an expert. I think the stat versatility and the extra feat give humans the edge. Drow get a charisma bump which is nice.

Fighter = Warforged [Runner up dwarf]
You don't need feats and WF get tactics and power attack extras as well as quick armor swap... Some builds favor other races but a generic fighter can't go wrong with WF.

Monk = Human [Runner up warforged or halfling]
Tough one, but human has no down sides and all the others have something for and against in a class that is best when fairly balanced in its stats.

Paladin = Human [Runner up Drow/Elf]
Humans give you the stat spread you want/need for paladin and the extra feat is a godsend in making specialist paladins. Drow has a good stat spread and elf has the nice weapon go-along. Their low con can be compensated for in a paladin build.

Ranger = Elf [Runner up dwarf]
I had to give them something... Elves just have a lot of natural synergies with a "typical" pure ranger build and few others have anything special they add to the class.

Rogue = Drow [Runner up Halfling]
Drow rogues are straight up easy to make. The stats align up really well and they get skill bonuses to boot. Halflings are well suited but just don't get as many applicable freebies.

Sorcerer = Drow [Runner up Warforged]
For classic sorc action, drow are a natural with 20 starting charisma. While WF self healing is massively powerful, its 16 starting con is a setback you can't ignore and makes them a more specialized build than a general class example.

Wizard = Warforged [Runner up Drow]
Here the Warforged penalty is less, and the versatility to hold healing and combat spells is better. Wizards are also more likely to want to supplement SP with some combat ability or the like and WF do great there making the self healing all the better.

For classes like Favored Soul it really depends on what kind of build you are going for.

Caster FVS: Human
Melee THF Pure FVS: WF
Melee TWF Monk splash FVS: Elf

For monks it also depends a great deal on your build focus.

Dex/Wis builds: Halfling
Strength/Con builds: WF or Human

So many classes have so many different builds that are very viable and what race is "best" is going to depend on what build you prefer. Any race can play any class well. Some have better synergy with classes than others, but as long as you have a solid stat distribution when you start the differences between races are not going to be that huge.

Everything should be Warforged or Halfling. And just an FYI, a Warforged is actually two halflings operating a tin machine that is why they are immune to fatigue because they also take shifts inside; They have double the levels so neg levels dont effect them because they are constantly hitting the restore on each other. Immune to poision because they are often heard inside squabbiling about who has the antidote, suffice to say, constant remedies are being belayed inside.

So in the end, Halfling FTW!

My opinions:

Barbarian: Warforged (Power Attack enhancements), Dwarf (Axe enhancements) or Human (Improved Recovery, extra feat)

Bard: Human (Adaptability), Drow (bonuses to CHA and DEX for TWF)

Cleric: Any

Favoured Soul: Human for caster, Warforged or Elf for melee

Fighter: Any

Monk: Human (stacking healing amp, skill boost for UMD), Warforged (Power Attack enhancements), Halfling (Dragonmarks, Sneak Attack), Dwarf (GM most stances easiest)

Paladin: Drow (racial stat bonuses here are awesome), Human (Healing Amp)

Ranger: Any

Rogue: Halfling (Sneak Attack enhancements, bonuses to Will save), Elf/Drow (bonuses to Will save, rapier enhancements)

Sorcerer: Human (Adaptability), Drow (highest DCs) or Warforged (self-healing, extra HP)

Wizard: Human (Adaptability), Drow (highest DCs) or Warforged (self-healing, extra HP)

Drow=Paladin
Elf=RNG that go AA
Human=Favored Soul+Bard
Warforged=Barb+SOR+WIZ+Melee Favored Soul
Dwarf=Cleric+Fighter
Halfling=MNK+ROG
All can do Tempest ranger pretty well

Anyone can "play" any class. Just some do not do as well in certain classes as others.

Dylos_Moon

Barbarian:
Dwarf, Warforged, or Human - The Dwarf and Warforged have 3 more con then the human after enhancements, but the Human does get an extra feat, which is nice for a feat starved class.

Bard:
Halfling - Let's face it, halfling dragonmarks make the best bard healers, and halfling enhancements make the best bard buffers.

Cleric:
Dwarf - Extra spell points via enhancements, extra con, and extra toughness enhancements, additionally if you care about armor class at all, a non monk-splash dwarven cleric will have higher AC generally then the halfling. Dwarves are also better at being battle clerics and caster clerics then most other race choices.

Favored Soul:
Elf - For battle purposes, Elves get the most out of Favored soul, they can use Scimitars and rez at level 6 if they take the undying court line - and they get enhancements for scimitar damage. Or they can take sovereign host and specialize in longswords and healing/buffing at the same time, though this is difficult to accomplish at lower levels. Or the third choice is they can take Silver Flame and either be a blaster type, or be an Arcane (Divine) Archer.

Fighter:
Human - Until Half-Orc is released, Humans have the highest Strength score, they also get the bonus feat, however a fighter doesn't really need it (it can however be another toughness.)

Monk:
Human - Because the human does not have any penalties to strength, dexterity, constitution, or wisdom, it makes the best balanced build, being behind the warforged in dps, and behind the halfling in ac. However the human will have the highest DCs for their finishers if that is important to you (but not stunning fist, dwarves have the highest DC there, and of course dwarves suffer no penalties to the above mentioned stats either).

Paladin:
Warforged - A warforged paladin is the best hate tank, period. He can also achieve one of the highest armored ACs, however the defender PrE does not function properly with adamantine plating (it doesn't raise your max dex). Additionally, they get bladesworn transformation, and can use the epic sword of shadows better then anyone else.

Ranger:
Human or Elf - Human for TWF, Elf for ranged. Human gets the bonus feat that they can use on khopeshes, and elves can increase their ranged damage.

Sorcerer:
Drow or Warforged - Drow can have the highest DCs, but Warforged have the ability to self heal through repair spells. Both races can achieve meaningful AC if one cares about that, with little to no arcane spell failure.

Wizard:
Warforged, or Dragonmarked-Halfling - Either has the ability to self heal, however the halfling doesn't have to spend their spell points to do so. The warforged however is less likely to run out of the ability to heal themselves, due to items that replenish spell points.

Not every Paladin wants to be a Hate Tank.

Plus most Paladin abilities work better with TWF than THF, making Human or Drow better choices for Paladin.

But Bladesworn Transformation makes you immune to Healing, and even though you can still be Repaired, it just makes it a situational ability at best.

If you spent alot of time as an arcane caster you probably know it eats up SP quick, clerics self heal but have better BAB and AC to defend themselves when their sp is depleted. Just because you can self heal with arcane magic doesn't mean you are the best, just means DPS is going down the drain every time you do.

what race to use where depends entirely on your build and that's only tangentially related to your class since there are dozens if not hundreds of solid builds for each class. and multiclassing explodes that exponentially. First figure out what you want your toon to do then figure out what combination of class(es) and race will get you there.

that said, warforged are virtually always a strong choice.

But you can use repair crittical wands, which are buyable in the Twelve shop, and also use any of the repair scrolls to self heal without having to invest in UMD like a fleshy would.

A couple of enhancements in your scroll effectiveness and you will be able to self heal quite nicely. Have a repair spell in the hot bar just for an emergency hit if you have to wait for your scroll timer to cool down.

honestly i cant say much for barb,wiz,monk,rouge,figter,fvs,cleric,sorc, bard, or pal

Best Race/class Halfling Ranger-tempest
saves, fear resistence, dex advancements, plus flanking bonus
spot, search, listen all get to go up alot more
and if youre going ranged you can get places most others cant so your pretty safe from enemy melee
and the dragonmark is a bonus for your heals

Funny how the OP asked which class was best for each race, and the forum quickly turned into which race is best for each class. A very different question. I'm assuming the OP enjoys trying the different RACES and was wondering which classes would be ideal.

IMO:
Halfling - Rogue - halflings get bonus to flanking and sneak attack damage, plus lots and lots of dex
Dwarf - Cleric - bonus to Con and racial enhancement to increase spellpower, makes them hardy with lots of heals
Warforged - Wizard - self-healing has already been discussed, plus much more hardy than average wizard, many of the immunities make up for low Fort saves
Elf - Arcane Archer - low Con means ranged is a good option, and Elf can become Arcane Archer from any other base class, a caster based Arcane Archer can get extremely solid dps
Drow - probably Rogue for Int/Dex dual bonus, also the only race that can start with 20 Cha so a sorc is ok, but low Con can be trouble
Half-orc - Barbarian, hands-down, they even get racial enhancements that require barb levels
Human - Paladin - needs too many stats that get knocked on other races
Half-elf - since half-elf is so versatile, I'll say Bard - let's you take Cha as a racial enhance like a human, can use Paladin dilettante to add Cha bonus to saves

Well, there's no "best race" but I'm bored and this seems reasonably entertaining. I'll do best 2, hows that? Also, I'm spliting some classes into 2 categories.

Barbarian - WF or HO
Bard - not sure so I'll just say human
Cleric - dwarf or human
Favored Soul - human or WF
Fighter - human or dwarf
Monk - halfling (dex), wf (str)
Paladin - human or WF
Ranger - (tempest) human or dwarf, (AA) elf
Rogue - halfling or human
Sorcerer - human or WF
Wizard - human or WF

Drow - wiz, sorc
Dwarf - kensai/tempest, cleric, hate tank
Elf - AA
Halfling - rogue, dex monk
Human - anything
Warforged - barb, wiz/rog, sorc
Half-Orc - barb, str monk, fighter

You play meatbags?
I eat meatbags (after using complicated science to make them into oil of course).
WF all the way ;)

I would suggest Half elf for pure bard builds .

The fighter dilletante will save so much pain as it gives proficiency all martial weapons. meaning that you can make any bard speciality you like and not have to worry about limitations on weapons .

The same reasoning for favoured souls also.

Much harder to say for multiclass bards as the builds are so varied.

Well the player skills and understanding the game are very important, synergies play usually minor diffrences (but for "power gamers" perspective that diffrences can be big).

Drow - they make fairy good rouges, bards, or casters (if player can agroo manage). They have divine synergy for weapons, but weapon of choise is rater weak (short sword). People create with this rase some paladins (28).
Dwarf - Can fit well in any class that have Cha as thier dump stat. They have realy high HP (stat and 3 tier of enchantment) that helps. Also thier weapons of choise (all axes) can provide DPS boost (even when axes are at the same DPS lv as long/bastard/great swords). Also their enchantment can boost a bit saves against spells.
Elf - they have realy good weapon enchantments (rapiers, falhons, scimitars, longbows), and very good dragonmark (shadow -> invi, !displacement!, shadowwalk). They can make good Fighters or barbarians (with class high HP and enchantmens their can overcome base -2 con squishieniess, also as fighter you will be able to put Dragonmarks to build that will increase your survivality). They also will work as Rangers (melee or ranged). Casters are a bit hazardous (due low base HP).
Halfling - King of backstabers. Can also make good in most classes (have good Dragonmark -> healing), but lack of synergies, except melee. They make great nontankish melee.
Human - accualy fit for all classes due the verstality, and no weakness. Usually as melee are outperformed by other...
Warforged - Due to immunietes it perform extreamly well in any classes. Their enchantments aim for melee combat and there they are primary. They prefer melee oriented specialisations (battleclerics, melee FvS, Warchanters). They make great wizards or sorcers due to self healing (if we take that they have this same con as dwarves then we can clearlly see why people would make wiz WF over wiz dwarf).
H-Orcs - DPS kings! Why survivality when you kill anything on sight. They can also make nice battle clerics.
H-Elves - Well... Intimitanks (due their duble intimi slots). Fair DPS. And also can take advantage of useing wands (if they have high enought stat to take proper dillante feat), or get all matrial weapons for melee oriented casters (battle clerics, fvs, rouges).
