I just saw a WoW 10 day free trial add right here on the DDO forums. Can we just get rid of the banner adds already? They bring in too little revenue to make them worth it. They are distracting. They ruin the atmosphere of the forum. They scream "low class". Get rid of them.

There are ads?

F2P = Advertisements

Just be glad they aren't in-game. As for the Pulse360 ad showing a WoW advertisement, it is considered pertinent to the viewer base of the site. Meaning, this is a MMO hence the advertisements will be based on the content of the site.

I seriously doubt anyone likes seeing advertisements, but with this game being free to play now it is a necessary evil. As far as the revenue generated by these adds, I hardly doubt you have the statistic data to determine whether or not they are "worth it" so making that claim is just ignorant IMO

Look at it this way. Blizzard is wasting money putting up ads in a place where nobody is going to pay attention to them. If you're one of those people who despise WoW and everything related to it, this should make you happy, not annoyed.

Well technically, Blizzard took out a contract with Specific Media (the ad server company) for a certain number of impressions to be made on MMO-related sites, one of which happens to be these forums. So it's not really like Bliz took out an ad on this site, not really. And the ad javascript is generally written by the agency, not the website, so occasionally you can get something odd or incongruous showing up.

Anyway, OP, welcome to ftp. ;)

The ads reduce the quality of the DDO experience. Burden of showing they are "worth it" falls on those who think they are. Show me anything credible that suggests the banner ads bring in decent revenue. I bet they don't pay for the person who suggested them.

At the least, they should be disabled for subscribers.

No one else in this thread has made claims about what revenue the ads produce. Only you. So I think any "burden of proof" is in your court. Good luck with that.

Though I should point out... again... that this is the internet. If you don't like ads, there are programs out there that let you block them as suggested earlier. Or you could be like 98% of other internet users and just ignore them. Except for the beholder ad, which still makes me smile, my eyes slide right past them without a thought.

I agree with your sentiment Parvo when these ads first popped up they annoyed me then I just started ignoring them. I support Turbine keep my subscription up have no need for most of what the banner ads are advertising (already a 10+ year marvel subscriber so that was the only one that really caught my eye). But on the flip side of hating the banners in this forums I was on a web comic sight I frequented and saw the DDO banner and though "wow how cool we are finally getting the word out about our game."

Just like the whole F2p newness im taking the good with the bad, sure there has been an influx of bad new players to add with the already hopeless noob long termers who just dont know they are noobs. But there have been plenty good people joining all around. And if a cheezy banner ad is really going to steal someone from this game to wow..good riddance in my book. But on the flip side if the broccoli vs beholder nonsense gets even a smidgen of attention from people who didnt know about ddo a few months ago then im for the necessary evil.

They are disabled for anyone who wants to turn them off on their end, so what's your point?

As for proof that they are 'worth it', I think its pretty obvious that they work or no one would still be using them after ten years. Might as well say "TV commercials are stupid and don't work."

Multimillion dollar companies actually analyze their advertising expenditures and returns. If banner ads didn't work, they'd spend their money elsewhere.

Exactly. It's more like 99.5% ignore the ads actually. That's the point. They aren't worth dog squat. Do your own research dd. Banner ads are puke. They don't make much money. Maybe you can convince someone else that official advertisements for WoW belong on the DDO forums, but not anyone smarter than broccoli.

Solution: Most mice have a wheel between the 2 buttons on top. If You scroll the page down a bit, VOILA! the banner ads can no longer be seen!

why so many add defenders here?

do you all write them?

I pay a sub, I dont want adds on the forum I pay for. yeah this is the general forum. adds also found everywhere else in here.

and as for adds on TV, uh, TV? TV (at least TV with adds) is even more of a wasteland than the internet.

ah well, I guess its either accept it, or... not.

Meh. Blizzard once has gold seller ads on their World of Warcraft official forums (http://www.wow.com/2009/01/22/gold-ads-appear-on-blizzs-forums/). That was way worse.

Now that's funny.

Personally I think people are oversentitive to these ads. It puts money in Tubrine's pocket and costs us nothing since we either use ad blockers or ignore them anyway.

Talking about aggressive ads, Turbine has done way worse than "a small ad that shows once in a while".

They have:

Bought ads space for "Aion connection problem" on Google
Covered the full homepage of www.wowhead.com, the #1 fansite for World of Warcraft, with a LOTRO ad (http://www.gamebynight.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/lotro-ad.jpg) for a while
Integrated a DDO ad (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=215085) to the design of Aionsource, the #1 Aion fansite, for a good while as well

Banner ads make money when you have traffic. They are useless for little billy's fansite that hardly has many visitors. But if you have 100,000 visitors, the fact that its only .5% responding to them still results in 500 responses. Do you seriously think the uptake on magazine, TV, or radio commercials are substantially better?

As for WoW ads on the DDO site, so what? As has pointed out, DDO advertises on other games' sites.

Turbine obviously thinks they are getting revenue from it or they wouldn't do it. And since they actually have the money (or lack of money) and you just have a lot of hot air, I'm inclined to accept that Turbine's view has more validity.

Just block the freaking ads. Threads like this lessen the quality of my DDO experience.

Come on Borror0, I wouldn't describe Turbine's behaviour here as "worse"...

I think it's quite machiavellian...

I like the way Turbine thinks! :D

I have to agree with Vormaerin like I said it annoyed me till I saw the flip side I was on the comic site Explosm.net (yeah I know not normally a chick comic but I like cyanide and happiness im weird like that). And the ddo ad is there big as day and for an off the wall web comic that place has a cult like large fan following. So I thought how cool that they are getting to see the ddo ad. And while I hate the "kick some axe phrase" I think the Broccoli vs Beholder ads are just right for places like that. I think if they felt the ads werent doing anything they would have pulled them but lets face it we dont have a wow budget (im assuming at least) if we did wed have celebrities in commercials pretending they play our game and wouldnt need such adverts but then again wow banner ads to so maybe there is a point to it?

I've done web advertising before and am well aware that they don't generate much revenue (with a handful of sites as an exception). However, it costs Turbine nothing to sell that space to an ad company. If they only sell it for $10 a month, that's still $10 a month that they didn't have before. The nickels and dimes add up.

I don't believe I tried to convince anyone that WoW ads belonged on DDO forums. I only offered an explanation as to why site-inappropriate ads are sometimes found.

Given your opinion of banner ads, you should be complaining about Turbine paying for ads on other sites, not the reverse.

I don't visit the other sites. Furthermore, I don't pay for reading and posting on any other forum. The banner ads detract from the site. That has a cost.

I see the Beholder add is back up. Good call. You've demonstrated that you can not control what ads appear on the banners. You also know the revenue is squat. In addition to that, you also know most of the banner adds are trash. You also know they annoy at least some of your players.

This is a no-brainer.
