View Full Version : Ranger 12/Wiz 7/Rog 1: A cure for 'Gotta-have-it-all-itis'?

I, like some others of the DDO community, suffer from gotta-have-it-all-itis. I tend to enjoy playing casters more than melee classes but am always envious of the sword swingers once I run out of sp (have learned to get better with sp management but it still happens) or when low level mobs need killin' (often a waste of sp better saved for named mobs). I'm a rather casual player and haven't got past the mid-level game content yet. Also, this is my first foray into multi-class builds. I saw Willan's Ranger 12/Wiz 7/Rog 1 halfling dex build and thought I'd try something similar, except go for a WF str build for self healing and TWF (khopesh).

Reasoning is likely very similar, 12 Ranger for Tempest II and TWF feats, 7 Wiz for stoneskin and repair critical (lots of self-healing) and other 4th lvl spells, 1 Rog for traps. Focus of wiz levels would be on buffing and self-healing as I know my damage and spell DC will be insufficient past low to mid level. My goal for the build is a support toon able to fill the role of rogue when needed, some caster buffing and reasonable DPS at endgame (should I ever make it there).

The part I'm struggling with the most is the level progression. I was thinking of:

1 Rog (skill point bonus)
2-3 Ranger (TWF)
4-8 Wiz (access to 3rd lvl spells)
9-12 Ranger (Tempest I)
13-14 Wiz (4th lvl spells)
15-20 Ranger (Tempest 2)

The leveling seems disjointed but the idea was to try and scale up the melee and casting capabilities together, rather then go for all melee levels or all casting levels at once. Admittedly though, my experience is limited to up to level 12 content so I'm not sure the viability of this leveling scheme (feedback?), it may just give me a gimped toon.

Alternatively, I may go 4-10 Wiz then 11-20 Ranger. But I thought this would leave me rather weak in melee. And though I could go for all my ranger levels first, I'd like to have some caster levels early to take advantage of the self-healing while I'm leveling this character.

As I am a casual player, I don't have any tomes but I did purchase the 32-pt builds and finally earned veteran status. While I don't have uber gear to tweek this build, solid game play will hopefully overcome the obvious challenges this build will have early on (like getting accepted into pugs, haha).

That's all. Any suggestions or glaring mistakes I have made? Thanks in advance. Merry Christmas to you all.

wiz13/rang6/rog1 will work way better

yes, you have to spend a feat on gtwf, but tempest II us **** if you cant go to tempest II and also you get reconstruct which is way better selfhealing then just rcw

I did see a similar build mentioned on a post awhile back but couldn't remember the toon's name (Talonkage) or the player's (Talon_Moonshadow) name. Kind of a similar idea here but with slightly higher spells. Visty, I'm assuming you meant to say tempest II is useless without tempest III? I was also going with ranger to get the TWF feats without needing to put as many points in dex.

Well, I really like mine.

I keep thinking about reincarnating him, but I don't really want to change him.

I wish I had more Wiz lvls....Wiz 7 is cool. Mostly cause I want fireshield! And I'm running out of DD scrolls.

I want more rogue lvls. I want more SA damage.

But I don't want to give up my Rgr lvls to get any more Wiz/Rog lvls.

I am working (slowly) on a couple Rgr6/Rog7/Wiz7 builds.

And I like the WF Wiz12/Rgr6/Rog2 idea.

A WF does get more from a splash Wiz build IMO.

Also, splashing Rog just for traps is overrated IMO.
I did it, I enjoyed it.
But my current love of Rogues is all about SA damage....and not traps.

No one waits for you to disarm the traps. It takes so much dedication to keeping your skills up.
it takes up a lot of inventory space for trap items.

I like Rogues; I hate doing traps. :)

I would suggest staggering the wiz/ranger levels to allow for rogue skills to remain maxed since wizards get much less skill points per level. Reconstruct is overrated when you can heal almost as much with repair serious and crits. I would drop wisdom on your warforged a couple points to 8 and cha down to 6 and use those points for con/str/dex. Dex still plays a role in your reflex save.
