I enjoyed it. While I think some off the spells and meta-magic feats you mentioned are kind of game breaking, I completely agree with everything you said about Enlarge person, and would roll a the pally sorc I have always wanted in a heartbeat if I could get Night-stalker's Transformation.

I think it would be really cool just to sit around and debate the validity of your spell lsuggestios with you.

I think you may have a new fanboy after this. Considering that it is me that might not be a good thing. :D

DDOcast/Ask the Devs 10

From Episode 148 (12-19-09)

Available here: http://www.cyberears.com/cybrss/8157.mp3

Host: Jerry

Turbine participation: Tolero, Glin (producer), Knockback (content designer), MadFloyd (design director), Genasi (systems designer)

THE NOTES:

- No plans to add ability to put mithril property onto armor or weapons right now, but would like to add more rituals in the future.

- Adventure Compendium/UI changes coming in the next few updates! Raid completions a “great example” of something they want to bring to the adventure compendium, along with other in-game commands that do not have corresponding UI buttons/features.

- No plans to add Practiced Spellcaster feat to DDO for balance reasons, among other things.

- Summon monster improvements coming! Selectors possible to determine kind of summon/number of summons. Also, Turbine is working to make summons last until they die rather than be tied to the cooldown. Other changes being looked at too.

- Tech limitation prevents ability to change last name in DDO. Tolero: If future changes will allow it at some point in the future, it will be considered.

- No plans to increase the VIP plat cap. Glin says related to 32 bit code, would need to update DDO to 64 bit code to up the 4+million plat cap.

- No Lotro-like Lifetime Subscription option coming, due to the DDO:U business model change with DDO Store and the ability to “customize own package.”

- Searing Heights getting new stuff soon! A “new organization” will be setting up shop in there. Assuming they were talking about new quests, but they didn’t specifically say that.

- “Everybody was very pleased” with the way the tutorial NPC voice work turned out, would love to do it in the future for an event or other appropriate place.

- Teasers about Dreaming Dark, chat about the story and the way it fits into the Eberron setting.

- No plans to increase Free to Play AFK logout time. Currently five minutes for people who have never made a purchase in the DDO Store (aka – have become Premium members). Simple purchase doubles time to ten minutes, VIP's get an hour!

- EPIC CONTENT: Why no epic in Update Two? High level pack meant didn’t make sense this time, but hope going forward that every update will have some sort of epic content for high-level players.

- Discussion of Dreaming Dark solo-only dungeon.

Jerry,

Finally, Turbine is hiring a lead games systems designer for DDO. Here's a LINK to it and here's a critical bit:

I'm the DDO Lead Systems Designer.

So, is this an internal hire and Eladrin has ascended further up the totem pole? Is Eladrin leaving DDO? Or is this for a different portion of the operations for DDO and they just share the same job title?

Eladrin explained this in a post somewhere. They're looking for an engineer, he's the designer.

Good! He’s not allowed to leave until he gets Whirling Steel Strike working.

Ah, going to have to fix that typo on the web site. I knew it was an engineer position, but wrote it wrong on the site.

Great show Jerry,

*<Rant session>*
Did you say you "love searing heights"? I don't think that area is used... at all... despite looking sort of nice... and having a few interesting mob combos. But that's not something you LOVE.

And that the Dreaming Dark has excellent presentation? You must have the DM voice turned off. "I could do a better job then that guy." I'm pretty sure that's what some exec at Turbine said so they have him doing the voice overs now. They could have taken a totally different tact and gone I dunno "nightmarish" on the dreaming dark pack... have Bruce Campbell or some horror flick personality do it... but no... they made Bob from marketing read lines.

Also, every Ask the Devs. Ask them where my halforcs are! They promised if I opened 20 accounts and bought warforged with all those accounts and nothing else they'd see a trend toward race purchases and give me halforcs. Where are my half orcs??? *
<end rant>

I do love Searing Heights! When my characters are about level 6ish I always take them in there for a night or two. I think the combat in there is challenging but not impossible and a great way to put your character through its paces in combat and survival.

That's true about the DM voice. I haven't really mentioned that in any of my talk about Dreaming Dark. Not a big fan of the DM voice, I agree that it just doesn't seem to match. Where was the british guy? I liked him better.

- No plans to increase the VIP plat cap. Glin says related to 32 bit code, would need to update DDO to 64 bit code to up the 4+million plat cap.

I don't think Glin has this totally correct. No need to go to 64 bit code to access (signed) numbers above +/- 2,147,483,647.

64 bit numbers (DWORD, long long, big_int etc) are available in 32 bit code and (signed) hold +/- 9,223,372,036,854,775,807.

The 32-64 port issue (mainly) comes if coders have taken 'liberties' with casting pointers (and a rebuild to 64 bit can be done with an option on most IDEs and a ton of testing).

I am struggling to think of a reason why an increase in the code and DB fields to hold bigger values would require a port to 64 bit (unless those 32 bits per int pushes some memory mapped file over the 4 Gb threshold).

I can think of other issues, including bugs in MS implementations of the 32 bit emulator (running on 64 bit MS OS's) and 64 bit SQL Server.
