I get the basic premise, mixing two classes together. But what do you get out of it? Do I get all the skills from both?

you get the learning experience and hopefully a well rounded character if done right. takes a little bit more planning than just going for it. (note for those that just wanna jump on and play) personally whether you are new or not it does take planning and dedication no matter what you do with your character.

The class skills of both classes are treated as your class skills, I believe, and the you also gain the benefits of however many levels you took of each.

If you took 14 Fighter/6 Ranger, you'd have whatever a level 6 ranger's class benefits and a level 14 fighter's benefits are.

You would (usually) be more well-rounded as a result of multiclassing but you would lose out on the capstone enhancements of your main class and, in many cases, your combat effectiveness would decrease if you chose a class that didn't complement your main class.
