SO i have a level 10 wizard now and i am considering spending some levels as a sorcerer, my thinking is that i will have the benefits of both classes i:e more spellpoints and spells as a sorcerer plus the double benefit of sp gear and abilities that a wizard has like scroll scribing and spell changing at shrines. what level does a wizard attain the highest level spells (9) is what i would like to know as well as would i get more spell slots available to me? im also curious how i could get my wisdom level to acceptable levels to achieve this,

and also looking for some feedback on what people think if this is a good idea or not and if i should just level to 20 as a wizard. thanks in advance

Something to keep in mind is that the bonus spell points are given at a proportional rate to your level. That is, a level 19 wizard/1 sorceror would only get 5% bonus SP from items that gave bonus items. I have no idea if magical training feats stack, but my instinct is that they do not. They only solid advantage to taking a level of Sorcerer is to get the faster spell casting without having quicken on.

Everything said and done, however, you're best off remaining a pure wizard. By the end game most of the things spellcasters are doing is doing instant-kill spells on enemies. As a pure wizard, you get a capstone that boosts your intelligence by 2, increasing that DC by 1 and giving a bonus to Sp. It also has the side bonus of decreasing the cost of all you metamagics by 1, making the cost for quicken even more trivial, or even free if you take all of the enhancements.

Remember that as a pure wizard you shouldn't be running into quests planning on brute forcing everything with firewall. Instead, you should be equipping yourself with the variety of spells that will best suit the area and strategy of the group.

you will loose more sp by taking the sorc level then you will gain....dont do it

never ever mix wizards with sorcs and vice versa, only divine casters might have a few benefits but mostly not enough for just a splash

I was under the impression that faster spell casting would only be to your sorc spells and not all spells? Does this mean a sorc/bard or sorc/cleric build would also get faster casting to their bard or cleric spells? thanks.

This cant be a serious question... but if it is please go 20 wizard.

It would be a very bad idea, OP.

First off, you won't get double spell points from items... the extra amount is proportional to your how many levels of Sorc you've taken in relation to your total level. Less levels in Sorcerer means less of a bonus. I'm not sure how much of a benefit you'd get being a 10 Wiz/? Sorc, but it'd be fairly low.

Also, the fast-casting of a Sorc will only apply to the spells you selected for your Sorc level(s). This ability is not granted to all spells you can cast.

Lastly, you'd also miss out on the Wizard capstone, which is one of the better ones.

Never, ever, ever muticlass unless you planned it out from the begining.Mixing wizard and sorc imo is never a good idea there is no cenergy in doing so,Wizzy+Rogue,Pally+Sorc"this one is only good on certin builds",Cleric+Monk all have cenergy, IE they have a common stat. You will only have the increased spell casting speed on your Sorc spells and the SP bonus for Sorc is dependent on your Sorc lvl, plus you'll be missing out on probably the best capstone in the game. Bottom line don't do this unless you enjoy rerolling.

I'm not clear on this whole "bad" concept... how bad?

Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.

Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Memnir.

Snip-

Also, the fast-casting of a Sorc will only apply to the spells you selected for your Sorc level(s). This ability is not granted to all spells you can cast.

Anytime ANYONE attempts this, the game should have a screen pop up and say exactly what you have written along with "You know...people are going to point at you and whisper if you do this...."

Ok, maybe not, but....Sorc/Wiz should have a huge warning lable all over it, as it does not work the way people think it will.

Wizards work very well with Rogue, but it needs to be planned out (with rogue the first level taken) from the beginning. Also as mentioned, there is some synergy with Pali's and Sorc (I have seen some Pali/Sorc War Forged builds that are quite fun).

In the old days, you used to see Clerics take a level of Sorc on occasion (minor SP boost, and Arcane Wand Usage) but that has become more rare.

Just add a level of Cleric and you're all set ;)

Since the "Ultimate Magus" PrE isn't in game this is definitely a bad idea just like everyone else has already pointed out.

............... but:

because Gozer's temple swung both ways and that by crossing the streams, the Ghostbusters were able to create enough force to close the door on Gozer and its control.....

.... so isn't crossing the streams a good thing, so long as you a wizard and a sorcerer who swings both ways?

This. Always this!

In a word, no.

I'm not a DnD wizard (couldn't help the pun), but in no way can I see any benefit of multiclassing a Wiz & Sorc. The small boost in sp at the start is a tiny bonus totally off-set by the negatives: loss of capstone, lack of any synergy (i.e. insightful reflexs/evasion with Wiz/Rog), and delay spells by one level.

Bottom line, you won't (really) cast faster, have more spell points or get double sp from items. Therefore, why even bother?

NO.

NONONONONONO.

No.

Sorc and Wizard DO NOT MIX in any way shape or form. Not 1/19 Sorc/Wiz, 19/1 Sorc/Wiz or any mix thereof.

For one thing, to be an effective Wizard you need high Intelligence. To be an effective Sorcerer you need high Charisma.

If you have max Charisma and max Intelligence your other stats (most importantly Con) make you useless. The low hitpoints alone would make your character incredibly frustrating to play.

If you had moderate Int, Cha and Con, your spellcasting would suffer horribly and you would run out of SP continuously. YES even if you were half/25%/75%/99% Sorc.

IN ADDITION

You limit the spells you have. If you have 10 levels of Wizard, you can only use level 5 Wizard spells. If you have level 10 Sorcerer, you can only have level 5 Sorcerer spells. That means NO spells higher than level 5 FOR EITHER CLASS.

Also, all of your spells that are "D6 fire damage per caster level" (or whatever) are for the class type you took that spell in. So if you're a 10/10 Wiz/Sorc, you do NOT have 20 caster levels in ANY OF YOUR SPELLS.

FURTHERMORE

If you decide to "splash" one or the other class so you get the "benefits" of that class on all your spells, YOU WON'T. If you go Sorc for the faster casting, you ONLY get it on your Sorc spells. If you go Wizard so you can swap spells you ONLY get to swap your Wizard spells. This has been covered by other posters above.

DON'T MULTICLASS WIZARD AND SORC. It just doesn't work. It's not good for you. It's like meth, except it's not addictive, it's tremendously frustrating and heartbreaking.

But hey, like they say, "Play what you want."

Having Wizard and Sorcerer on the same character is automatic grounds for refusal in any PUG I lead, and grounds for me dropping any group I am in when I see you there with me.

It tells me "this guy has no idea how the game works, AND he does not listen to advice, no matter how well-intentioned."

Wizard 19 / Bard 1 might have a purpose. Maybe you wanted UMD skill or Cure Light Wounds or Wand access.

Wizard 19 / Cleric 1? I can see it happening... You can use nearly any wand in the game.

But Wizard 19 / Sorcerer 1? No good can come of it. None. If you absolutely want Bluff as a class skill, take a level of rogue, just so you won't be a pariah.

Just don't. That class combo will make you less popular in groups than an Amway salesman with leprosy.

A Drow Barbarian 20 will get less grief and be more effective. Seriously.

Your better off put any extra skill points you have into Con instead of Cha on a wizard. Always.
