Hi, I was wondering if someone could concisely summarize how a red-named boss differs from an ordinary monster, and how other boss types differ from a red-named?

Red names typically have higher CR (Challenge Rating) than other monsters in the dungeon, so:
More hit dice
Better saves, AC, BAB
More & better spells and/or attacks

The short version is that if it would instantly kill the boss or keep him from attacking you, it won't work. Red and Purple are fairly similar in that regard. Orange names are vulnerable to nearly everything that normal mobs are. Unless you are trying to land a bard's Fascinate on them, it should work.

Red (not orange) named bosses are also immune to things which permanently incapacitate or instantly kill them, like:

fort save or die spells
vorpal effects
negative levels
hold, charm and paralysis effects
statistic damage to 0 (it stops at 1)
stun/autocrit causing effects (stunning blow, weighted weapons, etc)
immobiization spells (otto's sphere of dancing or otto's irresistable dance)

basically, red named bosses have to be fought straight up with damage, healing, tanking or kiting approches and must be killed by actually depleting their hp to zero (whether thats by kiting through a blade barrier, 5 dps surrounding and ganking it, or a tank with dps flanking situation).

an orange named mini-boss can still be vorpalled or finger of death'd on sight, but a red named boss has to be killed with hp damage, even by a level 20 character.

Here is an example of a red named boss.
