View Full Version : Hats off to the business model change

The new F2P business model is great, IMO. My home has been Sarlona for over 2 years, where I have 10 toons, several of which were capped before Mod 9. I had rolled a few toons on other servers, but usually quit around level 6 or 7, because I had no plat, no twinked gear, only 28-pt build, and there weren't many groups running at mid-levels. I could still get by, but it just became boring.

With the new Mod, I started a F2P account, and have started running toons up on all servers. I've unlocked STK, and Tangleroot, already, and am about to open Catacombs (all through favor, no cash). And the great part of this is the vast majority of this has been done solo. I realize as my toons get higher, I'll probably start to party more. But, the point is, you've provided a reason to level toons on all servers now, and to run quests I rarely ran before.

I know I can kick in some money to unlock other packs (which I may do eventually), but I've already got a separate VIP account, so this is mainly just a challenge to unlock all content, 32-pt, and FvS on all servers. At the moment, I am just unlocking content, but figure I'll put points towards another character slot soon, to lvl 3 toons on each server.

Most new players, I would think, would be enticed to spend some money in the store to unlock some essentials, and make leveling easier. Which is great for Turbine, and the game, but you've provided incentives for VIP players as well. The casual player can pay as they go, and still keep up, too.

Irregardless of the technical changes which happened in offering F2P, I know getting the the business model change cemented must have been hell. But, as a long-time player, I think it was a great one.

As a very vocal person, upset with the delay of Mod 9, I have to say it was worth the wait. Mistakes were made, sure, but you did a great job in the end. Thank-you Turbine, and good luck.

How many times can you offend and say "toons" in one post?

They're characters. Call them chars for short if you like.

It's "character sheet" in D&D, not "toon sheet".

It's "character slots", not "toons slots".

Drop the toon-speak. That belongs in Wow. :p

And I thought this thread died unceremoniously. Unless I missed something, "toon" has been an excepted term on these forums since I've been here (2+ years). FYI - never played WoW. Thx for the bump, though. :D

You just got to love people who have been here for ..... what, a month, telling the people who have been here for years how to talk on the forums.

I find people who come to the game from a PnP D&D background tend to call they "avatars" Characters and actually care about them as characters. That players who come to DDO from mainly an MMO background just call them Toons.

That players with toons, reroll at the drop of a hat, since it is just a collection of pixels.

That players with characters, tend to stick with them warts and all to the end, since that gives them flavor and a sense of being a unique entity, not just another bot from the assembly manual of Build of the Month.

I use both terms in posts to try and differentiate that fine line.

I have been a LOTRO subscriber, another one of Turbine's games, just as long as you've been here with DDO. I skipped on DDO until Eberron. Toon is a MMO-wide term, not specific to DDO.

What I hate is people calling it toon all over the place due to WoW. I've been playing RPGs, MUDs, and MMOs longer than you to know the difference. :-P

Then feel free to go back to LotRo. We here at DDO will continue to call them toons in your absents. ;)

LOL. The more fuss over the word "toon", the more I achieve my agenda due to its use. The more we post on this thread, the more people will think twice about the word. The more you use it in spite, for the moment, the more it becomes taboo.

The more trolling on it, the greater chance of thread lock, and the more my agenda progresses.

Thanks. :)

It's more like the more you open your trap saying you speak for the DDO community after being here for a month, the more ridiculous you look. And saying things like

I've been playing RPGs, MUDs, and MMOs longer than you to know the difference.
Just shows your ignorance. My first computer was a Timex/Sinclair 1000, it's what there was at the time. My first game system was an Atari, cause that's all there was at the time. Played Diablo I & II when they were new. And I play with alot of people that put me to shame. So please crawl back into your self righteous hole and stay there.

And Dan, please call your "TOONS" anything you like, as will I

Oh, so then you're just trolling. Moving on.

Incidentally, it really doesn't matter what nomenclature you use, so long as most people in the audience understand the meaning. Trying to insist that a particular name is somehow more apt, despite the general acceptance of another (and equally definitive) word, just illustrates that you're a pretentious blowhard. Good luck with that "agenda".

True, doesn't really matter that much. :) I hate seeing it, so I'll make a fuss over it just to push that "agenda".

The Term Toon probably came around the time of the RPG game of "TOON" by Steve Jackson Games in 1984, which was a pretty crazy game. I think some RPG'rs have always referred to their paper doll as a Toon rather than use the feminine terminology of paper doll; the term paper doll also has a 2D connotation.

I personally prefer using the P&P term character since this is the D&D game world. Cei la vie, chacun sa route.

I played PnP and all the text based games on the mainframes in the olden days of yore, never got into console/cartridge toys, preferring to play on expandable customizable hardware.

I learned to cheat by editing files to bump my stats/gold/levels artificially, to tick off a buddy who used a macro-editor to run the game all night while he slept - I doubled all of his "hard work" in less than 5 minutes, then never played that game again.

I've worked on a couple of commercial games in my time.

Now then, you know how long mine is, not that it matters, but seems to be required to "contribute" to the thread. :D

The point? I will continue to call my toons/chars "Alts". Why? I think of them as alternate personalities, I'm a stubborn old cuss and besides it's one less key stroke. :D

I would have assumed it comes from City of Heroes. Don't really know, however the actual history.

naw, it goes back much further. In the late 80s and early 90s, I used to code for a couple MUDs and we refered to ALL player characters as Toons. So FWIW, the term toon predates the 'modern' internet.

I can't say if that is the genesis of calling characters toon (I doubt it is), but back then we assumed they were refered to as Toons because, just like cartoons, they would always come back to life after being killed.
